Wellfleet Bay
Natural History Day Camp
Our camp is designed to promote a child’s lasting curiosity and excitement for the natural world.
Our goal is to instill awareness and appreciation of the natural world, to teach responsibility for the
environment, and to promote an understanding of our place in nature. Camp activities are carefully
planned to meet these goals and, at the same time, create a fun and memorable experience.

Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary serves more than 1,100 children through
day camp each year and welcomes more than 32,000 visitors annually.
Wellfleet Bay protects a anumber of Cape Cod’s endangered, threatened,
or at-risk species, and conducts research throughout the year. Our robust
science program allows us to bring actual research into all of our education

Additional Camp Information
Camp Staff
Our staff are chosen for their enthusiasm, experience, knowledge,
and ability to work with children in the outdoors. They are college
graduates or current undergraduates in an environmental and/or
educational field. Staff members participate in a week-long pre-camp
training and are certified in First Aid and CPR.
Our Expectations of Campers
Due to the outdoor and exploratory nature of our camp program,
campers must be able to move about on uneven terrain.
Campers are expected to participate in age-appropriate activities,
including nature study. All campers must follow stated behavior
expectations and safety rules. Campers in the Ecologists program
must demonstrate strong swimming skills in order to participate
in snorkeling activities. If you have any questions regarding your
child’s ability to participate fully in our camp program, contact Camp
Director Emily Wolfe at 508-349-2615, ext. 106. At any time, parents
may request copies of background checks and health care and
discipline policies, as well as procedures for filing grievances.
2 Pick-up Window: If your child’s camp ends at 12:30 pm
you may pick him/her up any time from 12:15 to 12:45 pm.
If your child’s camp ends at 2:30 pm you may pick him/her
up any time from 2:15 to 2:45 pm. This will help to alleviate
congestion in the parking lot.
Family Hikes: Check out some of the cool places that your
camper has been talking about, from the coyote den to
the “painted turtle bridge.” Wednesday mornings from 8 to
8:45am. No pre-registration is required and the hike is open to
all family members.

registration INFORMATION
Registration Policy
Registration begins January 5, 2015. Through May 15, registrations will be accepted online
and by mail. After May 15, only phone and mail-in registrations will be accepted. Mailed
registrations will be stamped with the date of receipt and processed on a first-come, firstserved basis. Registration must include payment for 50% of the total camp fees. The camp
fee includes a $50 enrollment fee per session per child which is nonrefundable. For identity
safety assurances, fax and e-mail submissions are not accepted.
Payment Deadline
The balance of the camp fee is due by May 15. If the balance is not received by May 15,
your child’s space is no longer guaranteed and you will lose the $50 per session enrollment
fee. No camper is allowed in camp unless all forms, waivers, and payments are complete. If
registering after May 15, your registration must include payment in full.

Form and Waiver Deadline
All forms and waivers are due two months prior to the start of a camper’s camp session.
Campers without complete paperwork will not be allowed to stay at camp on Monday. If we
do not receive your child’s health forms by the deadline, a $50 late fee will be assessed for
each child. Your child can only attend camp if we have all necessary health forms, waivers,
and payments. No exceptions.
Important Health Form Information
Massachusetts state law and the American Camp Association require all campers to submit,
every year, completed health forms supplied by the camp and a copy of child’s current
immunization record. Please note that all campers in kindergarten or above must have two
doses of MMR before coming to camp. A health form packet will be sent upon registration
and all pages must be completed and returned two weeks before the start of the child’s first
camp session. This camp complies with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of
Public Health (105 CMR 430) and is licensed by the Wellfleet Board of Health. Information on
these regulations can be obtained at 617-983-6761.
Refund and Cancellation Policy
All cancellations must be received in writing. A nonrefundable deposit is required to
register for each camp sesssion and cannot be transferred to another session, camper,
family, or camp location. Please check your school calendar for conflicts before registering.
Refunds are not given for participant dismissal, failure to attend, absence or sick days. If the
camp must cancel a session, you will receive a full refund. If you cancel for any reason before
the start of your child’s weekly camp session, the amount of tuition refund is determined by
the following schedule:
• On or before May 15: refund of all but the nonrefundable deposit
• After May 15: no refund is available
Cape Cod Resident Discount
Campers who reside on Cape Cod year-round receive a $40 discount on half-day programs
and a $60 discount on full-day programs. Proof of the camper’s enrollment in a Cape Cod
school district in the form of a report card, progress report, or letter from the school must
accompany registration in order to receive the discount. To qualify for Cape Cod resident
discounts you must be a current Mass Audubon member at the Family level or above
and be the parent, grandparent, or legal guardian of the enrolled camper. To check your
member status please call Member Services at 781-259-9500.
Financial Assistance
Financial assistance is available for those who need it. Please call to request an application.
All applications are due by May 15, 2015. All applicants must supply verification of income
or documentation that financial assistance is needed. Please contact the camp director if
you have any questions about necessary documentation. Tax-deductible contributions to
our Camp Scholarship Fund are greatly appreciated and can be included with registration.

6/29–7/3 Water Wizards
Animals that live in water lead much different lives than those that live on land.
Visit all types of wet places, including the tidal flats, freshwater pond, and a salt
marsh. While exploring these watery areas, campers will discover what it takes to
be a “water wizard.”
7/6–7/10 Interesting Inverts
What do you have that jellyfish, oysters, and crickets don’t? A backbone! Come
learn about the “spineless” creatures that make up the animal world.
7/13–7/17 Predator Party
What do snapping turtles, red foxes, garter snakes, and owls all have in common?
They’re predators! We’ll spend the week scouring the sanctuary for evidence of
these fascinating carnivores while learning how they hunt.
7/20–7/24 Earth and Sky
Watch clouds, hunt for earthworms, and roam about the forest and field as we
explore high, low, and everywhere in between! Craft a suncatcher to catch the last
rays of the summer sun!
7/27–7/31 Bird Olympics
Have you ever wondered why there are so many different kinds of birds? They are
the kings of adaptation! Discover which are the master builders, long-distance
fliers, and top-level predators. Have a great time during Friday’s Bird Olympics!
8/3–8/7 Go Fish!
Use seine nets, dip nets, fish traps, and more to get up close and personal with
some of your favorite scaly friends. Explore fresh, brackish, and saltwater species.
Learn about their adaptations and test the sanctuary’s water quality.
8/10–8/14 Bright and Beautiful
Search for the brightest flower, the most colorful bird, and animals with bold
patterns as you discover the importance of color in nature. Play camouflage
games, create colorful art, and make a fish print to take home.
8/17–8/21 Swamp Romp
What is life like for insects, amphibians, mammals, and reptiles that live in water
and muddy swamps? Catch frogs, go ponding, make mud crafts, and play water
games.
8/24–8/28 Marine-Life Mania
From salt marshes to tidal flats, discover the connections between the ecosystems
of the marine environment. Survey the invertebrate population of the tidal flats
by seining, dipping, and digging.

Campers ages 9–17 enjoy hands-on, nature-focused, outdoor activities with well-trained staff in a

NATURALISTS

The Naturalists program allows those interested in science
to participate in field activities while learning methods
and techniques used in wildlife community investigations.
Classes are full day with a mid-morning snack and lunch.
This program also includes weekly field trips to areas
relevant to the subject being studied. Camper-to-camp
instructor ratio is 8:1.
6/15–6/19 Metamorphosis Magic (see page 3)
6/22–6/26 World of Water
Includes a trip to a rocky beach. From salt to brackish to fresh,
investigate the importance of water. Go “ponding” to collect
information on the health of Wellfleet’s Silver Spring Pond.
Explore a saltmarsh and its aquatic inhabitants, and beachcomb
for intertidal creatures.
8/3–8/7 Introduction to Field Research
Includes a trip with a sanctuary research intern. Sea turtles
typically nest on the same beach where they were born. A
coyote’s home range is more than 10 miles. We know these
facts because of outdoor field research conducted by scientists.
We’ll use this week to conduct our own research projects at the
sanctuary and discover fun ways to collect and analayze data.
6/29–7/3 Habitat Quest
Includes a geocaching trip. Explore the habitats of the sanctuary
and Cape Cod in new ways. Learn about Wellfleet wildlife and
go geocaching on a real-life treasure hunt, where you will use
GPS coordinates to attempt to find a hidden geocache. You will
also learn about animals on Cape Cod that are being monitored
and equipped with GPS monitoring devices.
8/10–8/14 Living with Wildlife
Includes a trip to one of our turtle garden locations. Humans and
wildlife have been living side by side since the beginning of
time, but never as close together as now. Get to know some of
the more common, but often misunderstood, animal species,
such as bees, jellyfish, snapping turtles, snakes, bats, and
coyotes.
7/6–7/10 Trailblazers
Includes a trip to Nickerson State Park. Using GPS, a map, and
a compass, learn to navigate your way through woods, along
marshes, and around ponds. We’ll explore these areas, look for
signs of wildlife, and work together in team challenges.
8/17–8/21 Magnificent Marine Mammals
Includes a seal cruise. Discover some of the Cape’s most amazing
marine mammals. Learn about the region’s rich whaling history
and get a close-up look at a herd of gray seals. Discover how
the seals are connected to the increase in the great white shark
population.
7/13–7/17 The Adaptation Advantage
Includes a trip to the Truro Dunes. All plants and animals survive
because they adapt to their environment. Learn how some
salamanders ensure their eggs aren’t eaten, how mummichogs
survive with little oxygen, and what plants thrive in the sandy
dune environment.
8/24–8/28 Winged Wonders
Includes a trip to Beech Forest. Venture out to find birds in various
habitats and learn about their adapations. We’ll become familiar
with common birds and some less common ones! We’ll also
look for dragonflies, damselflies, and other animals that fly.
7/20–7/24 Cape Cod Voyages
Includes a marine life cruise aboard the Albatross. Set sail on the
waterways of Cape Cod. From seine netting on the tidal flats
of the sanctuary to exploring Sesuit Harbor and the waters of
Cape Cod Bay, you will get up close and personal with crabs,
fish, sand dollars, shellfish, and more!
7/27–7/31 Our Fragile Coastline
Includes a trip to the Outer Beach. Picture it: rolling waves,
sunshine, towering dunes, and a light summer breeze. Sounds
perfect. But wait...this could all change. Cape Cod is losing an
average of 3.8 feet of shoreline each year. How will this affect
the Cape and its wildlife? From beetles to birds, investigate the
fragility of these animals and their habitat and learn how you
can make a difference.

ECOLOGISTS
Entering Grades 6–8
9 am–2:30 pm, Monday through Friday
June 22–July 17: $355 M/$420 NM, per week
July 20–August 28: $365 M/$430 NM, per week
The Ecologists program expands on already acquired natural history knowledge.
Participants will be involved in exploration both on and off the sanctuary,
including inquiry-based activities, scientific research, and ecological management
studies. All sessions include opportunities to learn practical field techniques and
ecological practices, as well as outdoor skills such as kayaking or snorkeling. Each
week a different activity is offered with an emphasis on proper instruction and
safety. Camper-to-camp instructor ratio is 8:1.
6/22–6/26 Critical Coastal Habitats
Includes a boat trip to Monomoy Island and a kayak trip.
Recently southeastern Massachusetts has seen a large increase
in development. As a result, many critical habitats that are
home to rare and endangered species are being affected. Join
our week-long investigation of these critical coastal habitats—
sandplain grasslands, coastal healthlands, saltmarshes, barrier
beaches, and tidal flats.
6/29–7/3 Investigating Insects
Includes a snorkeling trip and a canoe trip at Gull Pond. Insects
comprise more than half the animals on Earth. Come get
wet while you catch dragonflies, use microscopes to identify
aquatic insects, and investigate the health of our water. Learn
field research techniques as you set pitfall traps for beetles and
conduct a pillbug population study. Be quick on your feet as
you try to census butterflies and catch swift tiger beetles.
7/6–7/10 Field Research Fundamentals
Includes a boat trip to South Beach and a paddleboard trip.
Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary conducts many summer
research projects. This week you’ll have opportunities to
take part in these projects while learning basic field biology
practices. You’ll take feeder surveys, radio-track box turtles,
search for terrapin nesting sites, census shorebirds and marine
invertebrates, and check for amphibians under coverboards.
7/13–7/17 Budding Marine Biologists
Includes a snorkeling trip and a whale watch trip. Learn about sea
turtles, watch whales, and meet scientists who cultivate clams.
Practice techniques for assisting stranded dolphins and learn
how to care for injured wildlife. We’ll snorkel and go whale
watching in hopes of some close encounters!
7/20–7/24 Marine Life Explorations
Includes a marine life cruise aboard the Albatross.
From the shore to the bottom of the sea floor, we’ll explore the
diversity of life that inhabits the sea. Cruise on a boat to sample
for benthic, nektonic, and planktonic animals. Observe the fish,
crabs, sea stars, and shellfish that call Cape waters their home.
7/27–7/31 The Outer Lands
Includes a hike in Provincetown and a kayak trip. Experience the
challenges and triumphs of trekking across a beach and dunes
at the windswept tip of Cape Cod. Climb the Cape’s highest
observation tower to view our changing coastline. We’ll also
kayak to explore the shores of Cape Cod Bay.
8/3–8/7 Migration Mania
Includes a boat trip to South Beach and a whale watch.
Migration—it’s for the birds, not to mention whales, butterflies,
bats, sea turtles, and many other animals. We’ll travel to South
Beach in Chatham to observe shorebirds as well as whles that
feed in Cape Cod Bay during the summer months.
8/10–8/14 Island Explorations
Includes a Nauset Marsh cruise and snorkeling trip. Discover why
island ecology is so unique. We’ll hike Great Island in Wellfleet,
check out Try Island, take a boat around Nauset Marsh, and
snorkel. We’ll look for marine life, such as sea stars and seals,
and search for natural clues from Cape Cod’s past.
8/17–8/21 Solar Science
Includes a hike in Provincetown and a paddleboarding trip. Using
renewable resources such as sun, wind, and water is key when
it comes to maintaining the health of our planet. Learn about
solar energy by building a mini-solar car and cooking with a
solar oven. You will also learn about the Cape’s abundance of
wind power and create your own wind-powered device.
8/24–8/28 Turtles of Cape Cod
Includes a kayak trip and a snorkeling trip. Turtles occupy almost
every habitat on Cape Cod, from pine woods to open ocean.
However, their populations have been declining, resulting in
some species being listed as endangered or threatened. Search
for, weigh, measure, and record the behavior of three species of
turtles to help us collect data and gain insight into their natural
history. Learn what we can do to help protect these reptiles.
Please note: participants must be able to demonstrate strong
swimming skills in order to snorkel. Please call the Camp
director with any questions or concerns.
For High School Students
Leaders-in-Training: Excited about sharing your love
of nature with children? Wondering if teaching is right
for you? Work with our camp instructors as they lead
campers through a myriad of crafts, hikes, and games.
This is a wonderful opportunity to positively impact
a child’s growth and environmental awareness, learn
about Cape Cod habitats, get a reference for college, and
acquire community service hours.

REFUND POLICY: All cancellations must be received in writing. The camp fee includes a $50 enrollment fee per child per
session which is nonrefundable and non-transferable. A camp session is defined as one week of camp. If you cancel for any
reason before the start of your weekly camp session the amount of tuition refund is determined by the following schedule—
on or before May 15: refund of all but the non-refundable deposit; after May 15: no refund is available. Refunds are not given
for sick or absent days.
