We have three screens, seating 272, 146 and 65 people. All areas of the
building are accessible to customers with limited mobility, including
wheelchair users. There is a lift in the main foyer that serves all floors and
the basement bar and cafe. Booking is advised for wheelchair spaces.

It’s a New Year and with it comes the notion of resolutions. What will yours be?
“I should go to the cinema more”, “I should watch more foreign language films”, “I
should stop making myself watch the films of Adam Sandler”…
Well we at the Belmont Filmhouse are here to assist you, and our fantastic range of films
and improved membership offer (which now includes a free ticket and £10 to spend in
our café bar) will really help to expand your cinematic horizons.
There’s that old saying “you can’t know where you’re going until you know where
you’ve been” and we are starting 2015 with a look back over some of the best titles of
2014, including Boyhood, 12 Years a Slave and Under the Skin.
And this year looks to be just as strong in terms of quality – straight out of the gate we
have The Theory of Everything, Birdman and Whiplash which will all find themselves
mentioned quite frequently with words like BAFTA and Oscars in the coming months,
with Birdman in particular showcasing what can be achieved cinematically from a
technical and storytelling standpoint.
It is important to stimulate and nurture that love of cinema from a young age so that is
why we are introducing Filmhouse Junior screenings on Saturday mornings. Not only
will we feature the best in new family films such as Paddington and The Book of Life
but also classics like Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book, and tickets are only £3.50 –
bargain!
And for those of you who have fond (or even unfond) memories of their teenage years,
we recommend coming to our special screening of Beyond Clueless, which examines
the teen movie genre and the messages behind the films and will be followed by a Q&A
with director Charlie Lyne.
Whatever your age and whatever your cinematic tastes are, we will have something for
you in 2015, so become a member and enjoy a fantastic year of movies at the Belmont

In Alejandro González Iñárritu’s big, bold, and beautifully
brash new movie, one-time action hero Riggan Thomson
(a jaw-dropping Michael Keaton), in an effort to be taken
seriously as an artist, is staging his own adaptation of
Raymond Carver’s ‘What We Talk About When We Talk
About Love’. As Thomson tries to get his play in shape
for the opening, he must contend with a scene-hogging
narcissist (Edward Norton), a vulnerable actress (Naomi
Watts), an unhinged girlfriend (Andrea Riseborough), a
resentful daughter (Emma Stone), a manager who’s about
to crack up (Zach Galifianikis)... and his alter ego, the
superhero who made him famous, Birdman.
For young Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) the future
looks limitless, his brilliant mind ensuring his success as a
cosmologist, while his relationship with fellow Cambridge
student Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones) promising a fulfilling
personal life. Then tragedy strikes when, at the age of 21,
he is diagnosed with motor neuron disease.

Master documentarian Frederick Wiseman’s latest takes
us inside one of the world’s greatest art collections, the
National Gallery in London, for a privileged look that
deepens our appreciation for art and its upkeep. Filming
over twelve weeks in 2012, Wiseman takes in visitor tours,
staff meetings, restorations, classes, and protests. As usual,
he practices a strict observational approach, eschewing
voice-over and interviews. His method calls upon viewers
to draw their own meaning from the material, just as we do
with paintings, and, for art lovers, there are endless riches
to enjoy over the film’s three hours – Wiseman concentrates
mostly on Old Masters, and his visit coincides with major
exhibitions of Titian, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Turner.

Vera Brittain’s beloved WWI memoir is exquisitely realised
in this moving and timely adaptation.

of her bad mood by encouraging interactions with the
opposite sex, but Delphine is holding out for true romance.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There
Will Be Blood, The Master) wild and entrancing new movie,
adapted from a Thomas Pynchon novel, is a cinematic
time machine, placing the viewer deep within the world
of the paranoid, hazy Los Angeles dope culture of the
early ’70s. Joaquin Phoenix goes all the way for Anderson
(just as he did in The Master) playing Doc Sportello, the
private investigator searching for his ex-girlfriend Shasta
(Katherine Waterston), menaced at every turn by Josh
Brolin as police detective Bigfoot Bjornsen.

A stylish documentary that combines key moments from
some 200 teen movies, Beyond Clueless is written and
directed by award-winning film critic Charlie Lyne, narrated
by teen star Fairuza Balk and features an original score
by acclaimed pop duo Summer Camp. Digging through
the vaults of teen classics (and a fair few that didn’t quite
make it) questions are asked about what’s really going on
behind the raucous house parties, glittering prom nights
and joyous graduations. Is The Craft the ultimate teenage
survival guide? Can the little-seen Devon Sawa vehicle Idle
Hands shine a light on the horrors of pubescence? And
what’s really going on beneath the skin of Eurotrip? Putting
the spotlight on the habitats, habits and behaviours of the
American teenager (in all its many forms) this documentary
ranges from the hilarious to the occasionally really quite
scary and back again.
Notoriously inept filmmaker Ed Wood, known for his
hilariously bad 1950s sci-fi flicks, bizarre lifestyle and
angora sweater fetish, is paid loving tribute in Tim Burton’s
comedic fictionalisation of his life. Written by Burton’s Big
Eyes collaborators Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski,
the film focuses on the ‘peak’ of Wood’s career, especially
his close friendship with ageing horror star Bela Lugosi
(Martin Landau, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar
for his performance).
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director
Charlie Lyne.

The boldest of contemporary Russian filmmakers Andrey
Zvyagintsev’s latest is a thriller, a black social comedy and
an astoundingly direct assault on the state of his native
land. In a small seaside town, weather-beaten patriarch
Kolya lives with his teenage son and second wife. The local
mayor, a drunken, corrupt bureaucrat, is set on grabbing
their land for himself. When Kolya calls in his lawyer friend
from Moscow, this defensive tactic triggers a series of
dramatic events.
Solomon (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is an accomplished violinist
living as a free man in New York who is conned into joining
a travelling show then brutally abducted and sold as a
slave. Based on Solomon Northup’s confronting memoir,
12 Years a Slave plays out on Louisiana plantations prior
to the American Civil War, exploring themes of physical
deprivation, self-loathing and the absence of choice. This
unrelenting, indelible work of cinema was nominated for
nine Oscars and won three, including Best Picture.

This superbly crafted and brilliantly acted adaptation of
Bernhard Schlink’s best-selling novel opens in 1995 Berlin,
where Ralph Fiennes plays aloof, emotionally numb lawyer
Michael Berg. We’re swiftly conveyed back to 1958, when
his younger self (played by David Kross) has a chance
encounter that will forever affect him. Falling ill one day in
the street, he is helped home by a stranger, Hanna (Kate
Winslet). Upon recovering, he looks her up to thank her
and they embark upon a passionate affair. As part of their
bedroom rituals, he reads to her from books by Mark
Twain, Homer and Chekhov, exposing her to worlds she
never knew. But then, one day, she is gone, her apartment
cleared out.
Michael isn’t to see her again until eight years later, when
he attends a war crimes trial as a law student in Heidelberg,
and she appears as a defendant.

Concessions available for: students (with valid
matriculation card); school pupils (15-18 years); Young
Scot cardholders; senior citizens; people with disability
or invalidity status (carers go free); claimants (Jobseekers
Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, Housing
Benefit); NHS employees (with proof of employment).
All performances are bookable in advance, in
person, online at www.belmontfilmhouse.com or by
phone on 01224 343 500. We do not charge a fee
for bookings made by telephone or on the website.
Tickets may also be reserved without payment, in
which case they must be collected no later than 30
minutes before the performance starts.
Tickets cannot be exchanged nor money
refunded except in the event of a cancellation of a
performance. Screenings are subject to change, but
only in extraordinary circumstances.
All seats are unreserved. If you require seats together
please arrive in plenty of time. Cinemas will be open
15 minutes before the start of each screening. The
management reserves the right of admission and will
not admit latecomers. Children under the age of 12
must be accompanied by an adult.

There are induction loop facilities in the box office
and infra-red facilities in all three screens. A small
deposit will be required to borrow the headsets,
which are available from the box office.
