Rob Gray will use his new book of poetry “Jesus Walks the Southland” to explore how the influence of other
poets shape writing. For centuries, poets have used allusions in their poems to create and enhance meaning.
The course will focus primarily on the influence of Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, William Blake, Nikki
Giovanni, William Wordsworth, Rainer Maria Rilke, and others have had on Gray's work, but will also look
at how other poets have been similarly influenced.

Ginger Crinkles
Makes 6 dozen
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp kosher salt
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups sugar (divided)
1 large egg
1/4 cup molasses
1 Tbsp fresh grated ginger
follow instructions.
1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets
with parchment paper. In a medium bowl, whisk
together the flour, baking powder, baking soda
and salt.
2. Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and a
cup sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy,
about 3 minutes. Beat in the egg, molasses and
ginger. Reduce the mixer speed to low and gradually add the flour mixture, mixing until just incorporated (the dough will be stiff). Refrigerate
until firm enough to handle, about 1 hour.

4. Bake, rotating the position of the pans halfway
through, until cookies are puffed, cracked and set, 8 to
10 minutes. Let cool on the sheet for 2 minutes, then
transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

This class will be a combination of images and lecture. It will cover the period from around 1500 to
1520 in Italy. We will cover artists like Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and the time in which they
worked. This will include the political, religious, and social history of the period.

3. Place remaining 1/2 cup sugar in a small bowl. Roll
half the dough into 1-in. balls (about 1 rounded tsp each)
and then roll in the sugar to coat. Place the balls on the
prepared baking sheets, spacing them 2 in. apart.

in a number of young scholars who will discuss current issues in Judaism. One of the scholars is
Arad Lerner, cultural ambassador, who has just arrived from Israel.

January 23 & 30. Eminent scholar, Richard Hillyer, Ph.D., will discuss his new book “Descartes’
Dagger: Poetry and Science as Mortal Enemies" February 6 & 13. Lars Tatom, Ph.D., the new chair
of the Dramatic Arts Department, will be speaking with us for the first time, and we are looking forward to meeting him. He will discuss “As You Like It” February 20 & 27.

Dr. Josh Duplantis, New Director of Center for Continuing Education and Conference Services
Dr. Josh Duplantis has served as the Director of the Center for Continuing Education and Conference
Services since August of 2014. Josh holds a BS degree from LSU in Vocational Education, a MEd
from Auburn University in Higher Education Administration and a PhD from the University of Southern Mississippi. Josh's professional interest include economic and workforce development, leadership
and university-community partnerships. Personally, Josh enjoys basketball, golf and running. He and
his wife Elisabeth have two children.
