GRADUATE SCHOOL 2015-2016 I’m developing a marine coating that repairs itself Graduate program Chemical Engineering and Chemistry * This major is formally part of the Computer Science & Engineering Bachelor program Graduate program Chemical Engineering and Chemistry Chemical technology plays an important role in solving societal problems. One can see its impact in the development of new forms of clean energy, new materials with highly specific properties such as ultra-strong fibers, as well as the design of new molecules, for example for controlled drug delivery systems. The Chemical Engineering and Chemistry (CE&C) graduate program is strongly linked with the actual research programs within the department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. The department is the single remaining dedicated department in the Netherlands in this area. Its research profile is a balanced mixture within two main research clusters: Chemical and Process Technology, and Molecular Systems and Materials Chemistry. Throughout the years the department has acquired a strong national and international position with a number of excellent and top research groups. In 2010, the CHE (Centre for Higher Education Development) ranked the CE&C graduate program amongst the top three Excellent European programs in the field of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. Within the Chemical Engineering and Chemistry graduate program, the following programs are available: Master’s degree program Chemical Engineering - Molecular Systems and Materials Chemistry - Chemical and Process Technology PDEng program Process and Product Design PhD program Chemical Engineering and Chemistry Master’s degree program Chemical Engineering The master’s degree program in Chemical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology will prepare you to become a chemical engineer with a high level of professional expertise. The program offers two different tracks in Chemical Engineering: Chemical and Process Technology, and Molecular Systems and Materials Chemistry. These tracks enforce a strong interrelationship between research and education. The different tracks offer a core program and an elective program in the first year. In the second year, students do an industrial internship and a graduation project. The two tracks within the Chemical Engineering master’s degree program each have a broad range of graduation options. Dependent on the student’s interest and the aim of the project, students can either focus on experimental or simulation/modeling research or perform a design-based project. In many cases the precise direction is not completely fixed so that students can influence the content of their own graduation subjects within the master’s degree program. Graduation options Chemical and Process Technology For the design and optimization of complex production facilities of chemical products it is essential to have an in-depth understanding of process engineering. In the Chemical and Process Technology master’s degree track you learn to design chemical processes and to integrate knowledge of transport phenomena, chemical reactor design, separation technology, plant design, process development and process control. Several subjects are studied, including novel (multiphase) reactors, (reactive) separation processes and the development and design of specific processes and products for industry. As a process engineer you will be trained to design processes in such a way that they are efficient, environmentally friendly and sustainable. Molecular Systems and Materials Chemistry Designing and making molecules with high specificity is a key competence in chemistry. Molecular engineers play a prominent role in developing and improving chemical systems ranging from new catalysts to biomedical materials. They operate at the frontiers of I’m developing a marine coating that repairs itself Xinru Su Master’s degree student, Chemical Engineering “Under the waterline, ships are exposed to all kinds of surface damage, such as from seaweed. Our smart coating provides a clever solution: when it is damaged, the surface structure recovers by itself. Smart coatings like this make products stay at a high performance level longer. My research team for this project included students from many different countries. Studying in Eindhoven allowed me to improve myself: I’m doing much more teamwork than before and I’ve gained a lot of confidence. During the week, I spend a lot of time studying. On weekends and holidays, I explore Dutch cities and travel around Europe.” science, learning the rules that govern chemical selfassembly, and bring self-assembly applications to new areas like organic solar cells and responsive materials. In the Molecular Systems and Materials Chemistry track, you can learn to use the tools of catalysis, inorganic and organic chemistry to contribute to a healthier and more sustainable society. Materials are everywhere and influence the whole world around us. Within the department the focus of materials science and technology is on polymers. Polymers are used in diverse applications such as packaging, protective coatings, insulation materials, clothing, furniture, building materials and in the biomedical field. By designing polymers you design everyday life. As a polymer chemist or technologist you will work on the development of new or existing materials and processes. This includes the synthesis, characterization and properties of polymeric materials as well as the processing into the final product or device. The Molecular Systems and Materials Chemistry master’s degree track offers you this possibility in the field of polymer chemistry, polymer technology, or materials and coatings technology. Study possibilities: Full-time Degree: Master of Science Language: English Times of entry: September or February Duration: 2 years (120 ECTS) www.tue.nl/graduateprograms/cec After graduation The MSc degree program in Chemical Engineering prepares you for a varied career and gives you broad options when you face the job market. For example, you could work as a researcher, a research team leader, a process or product engineer, an environmental advisor, policy assistant or lecturer. Many managers working in the chemical industry have a background in chemical engineering. In trade and industry you can start work in a job in which your organizational, coordinating and supervisory qualities are required. Government, too, employs numerous chemical engineers. For example in environmental services and water boards, and in healthcare. You will even find our graduates in design consultancies and patent offices. You can also choose to continue studying in the PDEng program Process and Product Design or in one of our PhD programs. PDEng program Process and Product Design Following your master’s graduation, you can continue on to the PDEng program Process and Product Design within the Chemical Engineering and Chemistry graduate program. High-tech industry needs experienced designers able to design complex (new) products and processes. A master’s degree may well give you the requisite theoretical knowledge but you still lack sufficient practical experience. A PDEng program gives you that practical experience, which boosts your market value for industry. You will have the status of a TU/e employee. That means you will receive a salary and have excellent secondary conditions of employment. You graduate with a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree. The two-year program Process and Product Design prepares MSc graduates of Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Applied Physics for key technological positions in the chemical and food industries as well as in industries where polymer technology is the central theme. The pièce de résistance of this program is the further development, in relation to the MSc level, of knowledge and expertise needed to be able to design complex (chemical) processes and products. Integration of knowledge elements from various disciplines is leading in this program, with application in examples inspired by industrial practice. In the first year you will boost your knowledge of technically based natural science and, specifically for design, technology management. The method is characterized by the direct practical application of the lecture material in (small) design projects performed in an international team. In the first year you will be supported with program components such as methods and techniques for design, project management and statistics as well as plenty of focus on your personal and professional development. This first year consists of both technical as non-technical courses, followed by either process engineering courses or courses in materials chemistry. At the end of the first year you can choose your own electives. In the second year you will perform an incompany assignment receiving intrinsic and projectrelated support from the TU/e as well as from the company. Lecturers from the relevant industry sectors and the university community are involved in this program. Study possibilities: Full-time Degree: Professional Doctorate in Engineering Language: English Times of entry: April 1, October 1 Duration: 2 years www.tue.nl/ppd The PDEng programs are coordinated in the 3TU. School for Technological Design, Stan Ackermans Institute. The institute represents the three universities of technology in the Netherlands and was established in mid-2006. I’m making the chemical industry more sustainable Alvaro Carlos Varas PhD student Chemical Engineering and Chemistry “I’m working on a computational model that simulates hydrodynamics in so-called riser reactors, to gain insight in cluster phenomena that have a negative impact on riser performance. The implementation of these models in industry will improve reactor efficiency and sustainability by reducing the time and money needed to experimentally optimize process conditions. TU/e is one of the best and most well-known universities in the field of Chemical Engineering. It houses a lot of scientific disciplines, which makes it easy to network with co-workers and find someone with the right experience to assist you with any problem you may have.
