WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH A Christian community of welcoming and nurturing faith. JANUARY 11, 2014 10:30 AM ORDER OF WORSHIP Worship is a word derived from two words, which mean “to ascribe worth to God.” The main body of the service moves broadly from hearing to doing, from proclamation to thanksgiving. The prelude before the service is a call to prepare our hearts and minds for the worship of God. GATHERING The people gather in response to God's call, offering praise in words of scripture, prayer, and song. The people acknowledge their sinfulness and receive the declaration of God's forgiveness. Prelude Morning Has Broken Wilbur Held Welcome/Announcements/Prayer Concerns (Please sign the friendship pad, and then pass it to the next person. If you are able, please stand in praise for items marked with “↑”) ↑ Call to Worship Leader: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. People: The Spirit of God swept over the face of the waters; then God said: Let there be light, and God saw that it was good. Leader: At the beginning of his ministry, Jesus was baptized by John. People: The heavens opened, and the Spirit descended like a dove; then God said: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. ↑ Hymn #492 Baptized in Water BUNESSAN ↑ Confession Leader: A prophet appeared in the wilderness, calling the people to repent, be baptized, and prepare the way of the Lord. We return to the water to confess our sins, giving thanks for the grace of Jesus Christ, the one who has come to save us. People: God of all glory, you look from heaven and see us as we are— not worthy to kneel at your feet, not ready to welcome your way. Forgive us, gracious God. In Christ, stoop down to save us; loosen the ties that bind us to sin and set us free to love and serve you; in Jesus’ name. Amen. (A Time for Silent Prayer) ↑ Assurance of Forgiveness ↑ The Passing of the Peace Pastor: Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Please turn to your neighbor and offer the peace. ↑ Hymn #577 GLORIA PATRI THE WORD Scriptures are read and their message is proclaimed. The composer (from Singapore) sent this tune to the author (in New Zealand) to see what text it might inspire from her. She also suggested the tune name, a Maori phrase meaning “Holy Spirit.” _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ WAIRUA TAPU TEXT: Shirley Erena Murray, 2004; Chinese trans. The text was commissioned in 1987 by Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, where it has continued to be used each Sunday as the offertory response. The triune activity of God as Creator (line 1), Savior (line 2), and Sustainer (line 7) enables and inspires our thanks and praise. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ TEXT: Carl P.
