On March 8, Allan Head was
awarded the YMCA of the Triangle’s
Lifetime Achievement Award at the
YMCA’s Annual Celebration.
The YMCA of the Triangle was born through prayer in 1857 when a small group of men was
determined to transform the community. Today, our organization remains firm in faith thanks to
volunteers like Allan Head.
For more than 35 years, Allan has modeled the YMCA Mission through a variety of volunteer
roles. In nearly every activity, he assumed key leadership responsibilities. Allan began his service
with our YMCA through Y Guides and Y Princesses and
served as Chief of the Arapahoe Nation. He was active
in membership campaigns in the 1980s and chaired the
membership drive at the Central YMCA.
He served as a board member of the Capital Area YMCA.
The Annual We Build People Campaign launched in 1993
during Allan’s tenure as Chair of the Capital Area YMCA
Board. From 2008-2011, he chaired the Camp Kanata
Board of Advisors.

Allan helped establish our YMCA’s Christian Emphasis
Committee and has represented our Y on regional Y
committees and boards through the South Field and as a
member of the Board of Directors of the YMCA of the USA.
Allan is Executive Director of the North Carolina Bar Association, a position he’s held since 1981.
Allan currently serves as a YMCA of the Triangle Trustee and as a member of the Camp Kanata
Advisory Board. He and his wife Patti have three children and eight grandchildren.
“Our Mission compels us to serve all,” said Doug McMillan. “Allan takes that seriously, and he
shares his love of the Y with others and encourages us all to expand our reach. He was the first
one I remember to publicly voice the vision for a regional YMCA when in 1994 he suggested that
one day there will be a YMCA of Eastern North Carolina.”
Today, our YMCA’s reach spans the entire Triangle, but we continue to focus on our one Mission.

In 2015, more than 11,000 volunteers donated more
than 198,000 hours to our community.
On our Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day, more than 650
volunteers and staff gathered at locations around the
Triangle and gave more than 2,400 hours of service across
the region. That was just one day!

The achievement gap - the gap between test scores of low income students
and wealthier students - widened in North Carolina more than in any other
state between 2011 and 2014. –Education Equality Index
In the last three years, 11-year-old
Julian, a student in Johnston County,
leaped over the achievement gap.
In fact, Julian maintains a spot on
his school’s honor roll, thanks
to Y Learning, the YMCA's
standardized turorial program.
“I’m so proud of him. He set a goal and achieved
it,” exclaimed Julian’s mom, Jennifer.
For the past three years, the YMCA has made
a significant investment in Y Learning students
with the use of i-Ready, a standardized
academic assessment technology that
adapts to a student’s individual needs.
Through i-Ready, students are assessed three
times during the school year.

In 2015, our YMCA opened our doors wider than ever through
unique programs and facilities to allow better access to everyone
in our growing community.
Southeast Raleigh YMCA
In November 2015, the YMCA made a significant investment in the shared dream of broad
community-based service in Southeast Raleigh with the purchase of 32 acres on Rock
Quarry Road.
The property will serve as the home, or beacon site, that will include a YMCA facility,
affordable housing, a school and other amenities. The YMCA is securing anchor partners
to deliver these core services. In the future, an independent quarterback organization will
coordinate community engagement and collaborations.

“For nearly three years, we engaged residents and community organizations in Southeast
Raleigh with the intent to invite many perspectives to this process,” said Courtney Crowder,
YMCA of the Triangle board member. “It quickly became clear that our neighbors’ desires
and vision included much more than a new YMCA with traditional Y services and programs.
Our community has imagined a unique service model that we are excited to deliver.”
Future Impact: 8,000 new members and participants
The Southeast Raleigh YMCA will deliver fee-based and subsidized programs and services
at the YMCA facility and in collaborative ways that reach beyond a traditional brick and
mortar model.

Poole Family YMCA
The public fundraising campaign for the Poole Family YMCA launched in April 2015. The
facility is being named in recognition of Lonnie and Carol Poole and their commitment to
a permanent YMCA in Garner. The 14-acre property on Aversboro Road will be named
the Bell Family Campus in honor of their family's significant contributions to the YMCA
in Garner.
The YMCA facility will offer a wellness center, gym, outdoor pool and youth program
space in the heart of Garner.

YMCA at Knightdale Station

In 2015, our YMCA expanded programs in Eastern Wake County with the opening of the
YMCA at Knightdale Station. Youth soccer kicked off, a new summer day camp started in
June, and in July our new pools opened with a big splash.
Northwest Cary YMCA
Through a unique collaboration, the YMCA and Crosspointe Church will offer the
community a YMCA facility that will include a wellness center, outdoor pool, group
exercise studios and amenities for the whole family. The Northwest Cary YMCA is
expected to open in 2017.
“We believe it is in the community’s best interest to partner with another great
organization, the YMCA of the Triangle, to do more together than either of us could do
separately to positively affect people’s lives in this region,” said Jonathon Bow, Lead
Pastor at Crosspointe Church.

access to all YMCAs in the Triangle and
in North Carolina through the statewide
reciprocity program.

“Every one of the Batchelors love Camp for the positive impact that it has had on our lives.
How can we better honor Burnie than to enable other children to have the
opportunity to attend these two camps that were so dear to his heart?”

For more than 40 years, Burnie Batchelor captured the spirit of YMCA
Camp Sea Gull and YMCA Camp Seafarer on film. Recruited as Camp photographer
in 1961, Burnie, and later his daughter Joy, chronicled the camps’ history through black and
white cabin photos, staff pictures and amazing images of the facilities. Burnie’s smile, outgoing
personality and red socks prompted generations of smiles.
But the Batchelors' relationship with Camp became a family affair. All three of Burnie and Jerry’s
children, Rick, Joy and Ronnie, and all seven grandchildren spent their summers at Camp Sea Gull
and Camp Seafarer as campers and counselors.
The Batchelor family established a named endowment in honor of Burnie. The Burnie Batchelor
Family Camper Scholarship Endowment honors the love and service that Burnie, Jerry and the rest
of the Batchelor family have shared with Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer. This generous gift will
help make the Camp experience possible for boys and girls in the future.
