Wrestlers, hoopsters face stern weekend tests
Trio taking part in
prestigious tourney
Fulton wrestlers have never ducked a challenge, and that will be especially true this
weekend when a trio of Red Raider matmen
take part in one of the east coast’s toughest
tournaments. Mitch Woodworth, Travis
Race and Joe Abelgore will be among the
competitors at the Eastern States Classic at
SUNY Sullivan in Loch Sheldrake, a tournament that will feature wrestlers from six
different states and 149 high school teams.
The impressive field includes 25 defending state champions and 14 second place
finishers from 2014, and as a result will
prove to be an excellent baromoter for the
Fulton representatives. The competition is
so intense that Woodworth, 20-0 and on the
verge of becoming the all-time winningest
Raider wrestler, is seeded fifth in a 126
pound bracket that includes two nationally
ranked wrestlers.
“This tourney is, pound for pound, the best
on our schedule,” Woodworth commented.
“We face a lot of tough kids and it really
prepares us for the state tournament.”
So far this season the senior standout has
been an unstoppable force while registering 13 pins and one technical fall. All of his
pinning performances have come in the first
period, ranging from a stunning seven seconds to 1:59, while his composite score in
decisions is 54-8. Fifth in New York State
in 2014, the two-time defending Section 3
champion is 64-3 over the past two seasons,
but will be hard pressed to maintain his perfect start to the current campaign.
Race brings a 25-3 record into the 170
pound ring highlighted by 19 pins including 11 in a row in early Decembere. The
Section 3 champion at 160 last season, he
will be seeded 13th with several nationally
ranked wrestlers in his bracket.
Abelgore enters the 99 pound competition
as the #11 seed in a bracket that has two
nationally ranked competitors and a returning state runner-up. The senior has compiled
a 19-6 record that includes 11 pins and a
stand of eight pinning efforts in a row. All
told, the senior has outpointed the competition 100-22 this season.
And while Woodworth, Race and Abelgore
are headed downstate, their Raider teammates are taking part in the Bradhsaw Invitational Tournament in Canandaigua, looking to carry the torch for Fulton despite missing three key performers.

Highly regarded Rams invade tonight
The varsity boys basketball team has its second major test of the week this evening when
perennial powerhouse Jamesville-Dewitt comes to Fulton for a 6:30 pm start. The Red
Rams bring a 3-0 league and 6-2 overall mark into tonight’s match-up, losing only to Westhill
and CBA along the way. Coach Bob McKenney’s squad is led by outside shooting threat
Dom DeRegis, a 16 point per game performer who has connected 19 times from behind the
three point arc along with 11 ppg. contributor Isaiah Williams. In all the Rams have made
good on 55 threre point shots, nearly seven per game, so defending the perimeter will be a
major concern for the Red Raider defense.
Fulton has its own outside marksman in leading scorer Cody Green, an 18 ppg. shooter
who has contributed 21 long-range baskets so far this season. Big man Chris Jones, at 15
ppg. will also be looking to make a major contribution against a J-D side that has racked up
a 24-5 record over the past two seasons and is synonymous with success at the Section 3
level and beyond.
Coming off a 74-51 loss to Bishop Ludden on Tuesday, Coach Kimpland’s 6-2 Red Raiders will look to end a two game skid that followed the team’s best season opening run in
recent memory.

Driver education class is well worth your time

The term “Driver Education” may not be
appealing to some. You may be thinking that
you do not want to spend your time in another class after a full day of school. Despite what you may think, taking a driver
education course has many benefits. It is
even offered right here at G. Ray Bodley.
The first part of the course is a lecture, which you will attend 2-3
times a week. Here, you will learn the rules of the road, how to
identify road signs, and much more useful information that you
need to know. Next, you will participate in drive time with an instructor. You cannot learn to drive without practice, and let’s face it,
your mom or dad may be a good driver, but that does not mean they
will be a good teacher. According to the New York State DMV
website, 24 hours of classroom lecture time and 24 hours of drive
time must be completed in order to pass the course. While this seems
like a lot of work, the benefits make taking the course worth it.
Aside from learning to deeply understand how to drive, there are
some other perks to taking driver education. Young drivers who
have their junior license are not permitted to drive after 9 pm, unless it is from a school function, and they should not be driving
with more than one person in the car with them. However, if you
complete a driver education course, at 17 years old, you will be
eligible for a senior license. This permits you to drive freely after 9
pm and drive with as many passengers as your car can legally hold.
If you do not take a driver ed. course, you will have to wait until
you are 18 to gain these privileges. Also, you can save money on
your car insurance premium if you complete a driverís ed course.

Big year ahead for new movies and sequels
The coming year 2015 promises to be an exciting one for movie
lovers. The big screen will be showing sequels to some current favorites, as well as coming out with some brand new ìcanít missî
features.
The Barden Bella’s will return in Pitch Perfect 2, a sequel of the
2012 a cappella favorite that is set to come out in May 2015. The
2010 comedy Hot Tub Time Machine comes out with its sequel on
February 20th. Family favorite Paul Blart: Mall Cop hits the big
screen for part two in April. Insidious Chapter 3 and Ted 2 will
come out this June.
If you love superheroes and action, you will love the collection of
movies coming out this year. Fantastic Four hits the screen in June,
along with Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1st. Also, Ant-Man,
directed by Peyton Reed, is said by critic Gregory Ellwood to potentially be ìthe most visually creative Marvel movie yet.î Study up
on your comics and get ready to watch the action.
Hitting theatres at the end of 2015 is Star Wars: Episode VII and
Jurassic World, a film set 22 years after the effects of Jurassic Park.

There is no set date for Jurassic World yet.
Additionally, the long awaited Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part
2 will come out on November 20th, 2015.
Do not worry if none of these movies interest you. There will be
plenty of comedies, romances, horror movies and every other genre
you could imagine! Keep an eye out for exciting movies coming
out in 2015!

Road to the Super Bowl continues this weekend

Andrew Luck can insist that he is facing the
Denver Broncos and not the enormous
shadow cast by quarterback Peyton Manning
all he wants to, but until the man who took
Manning’s place at Indianapolis wins the big
one, the comparisons will always be there.
Statistically Luck had a better season than
the future Hall of Famer with 4,671 yards and 40 touchdowns compared to Peyton’s totals of 4,727 and 39 six pointers, but he has
also played one more game than the man who will be standing on
the opposite sideline come 4:40 Sunday at Mile High Stadium. Both
quarterbacks are capable of filling the air with footballs, but the
real key to this game, besides penalties (just ask Detroit) and turnovers (just ask Cincinnati) will be the run game. And in that respect Denver has a decided advantage as C.J. Anderson has rushed
for 849 yards and nine touchdowns, entering the end zone more
times than the entire Colts backfield combined.
Throw in the fact that Indy’s defense ranks 18th in the league
against the run, and the scales could well be tilted in Denver’s
favor if the Broncos are able to establish a ball control attack that
will keep Luck and company off the field. Luck will look to T.Y.
Hilton (82 receptions, 1345 yards, seven TDs) and Coby Fleener
(51-774-8) while hoping that the weather does not prove to be a
factor for an offense that has worked indoors most of the season.
Denver’s aerial game features the Thomas tandem of Julius (43
receptions, 489 yards, 12 touchdowns) and Demaryius (111, 1619,
11) with Emmanuel Sanders (101, 1404, 9) thrown in for good measure.
The Colts were 6-0 against the weak AFC South, but only 6-5
against other competitors including a 1-4 mark against other playoff teams not from Cincinnati. Pittsburgh, New England and Dallas
combined to score 135 points against the boys in blue and white,
so their 12-5 record is still somewhat suspect. The two teams met
in Denver during week one of the current season with the Broncos
pulling out a 31-24 victory, so revenge will be a factor. The Broncos, however, join Green Bay as one of just two teams to go 8-0 at
home this season and have not lost at Sports Authority Field in 13
months while compiling a two year home mark of 17-1. If Luck can
scramble with some success the Colts stand a fair chance of ending this streak. But if he cannot, it looks like a rematch of last
year’s AFC Championship game with one major difference: the
Patriots will have home field this time around. That, of course, is
a whole different story to be explored next

Last week the Cowboys had a tough game against the Detroit Lions
but pulled out the victory. As a result, they will be in action this
week facing the power house team the Packers. If quarterback
Tony Romo has a good game and running back Dez Bryant has good
game, the Cowboys should be ok. And ifthe Packers are also on,
with the match-up between Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers and Tony
Romo it should be a great match up. Aaron Rodgers may well be,
pound for pound, the best quarterback in the NFL, which will help
the Packers win.
He also has very good wide receivers as Jordy Nelson is their top
wide receiver and has helped deliver for the Packers this year.
Rodgers is also a very good leader and has been in big games before, which helps them under pressure if they get in that situation. But one cannot forget the run game for the Packers with
Eddie Lacey, a big man who can get through the holes fast. If the
Packers can do this they will give the Cowboys a fight of their life.
Tony Romo is a veteran in the quarterback position has been in
many big games and should handle the pressure well. Romo is a
key asset to the Cowboys success and huge for them to make big
plays which have put them back in the leaders chair. But they also
have another great player and leader in Dez Bryant, who is a very
athletic player who can make unbelievable catches. Another good
player who is having an outstanding year and might be in the run
for MVP is Demarco Murray with a 4.7 average per carry on the
field. He is a beast and they need to get him rolling.
The wild card for the Cowboys is Jason Witten, who has been In
these huge games before. It is going to be a close one here again
like last week for the Cowboys, but the Packers are too much and
in the end will prevail at home, 34-28.
