Diana Rodiguez was chosen
Employee of the Month for
November. Diana has worked at
Wheatland as a Caregiver and
Med Aid for almost three years.
Diana’s favorite things to do
are fishing with her family,
working at Wheatland Assisted
Living and couponing. Diana
stated that couponing is saving
her money, which is something
her and Augustin love to do
together.
Diana and her husband,
Augustin, have three children.
Natalia who is 15 years old,
Isabel who is 11 and Augustin Jr.
who is 10. Diana was born and
grew up here in Walla Walla.
Workers have chosen Diana
as she is very dedicated to her
job, the residents and their
families. Diana cherishes her
workers and her job here at
Summerland AL.

It’s a new year and the perfect
time for a fresh perspective.
Could you use a little boost?
Would you like to have a little
more energy? Join millions of
your fellow Americans this New
Year by engaging in five simple
habit-forming activities.
Drink more water. Do you
get hungry in the evenings or
between meals? Studies show
that 60% of the time your body
isn’t hungry—it’s thirsty! We
misread the signals and think
that our body is urging us to eat
when it is really urging us to
drink water. Dehydration is the
number one underlying cause of
emergency room visits for
seniors.
Go for a walk. The biggest
muscle group in your body is
your legs and buttocks—and
they need exercise. (The
strongest muscle in your body is
your tongue, but it already gets
plenty of exercise!) Walking is
fun, easy and cheap. Everyone
can do a little. Just because you
can’t walk as far or as fast as you
once did is no excuse for not
doing it today. Hulda Crooks
ran her first marathon after 65
and continued running into her
90’s. She also climbed 14,505
foot Mt. Whitney 23 times
between the ages of 65-91! Age
is no barrier.
Connect with God. You’ve
got places in your brain that can
only be activated by interaction
with your creator. It’s not

surprising that He created you
that way. God delights to
communicate with you through
Bible scripture, sacred music and
personal prayer. If you haven’t
already connected with God,
don’t delay. Like all muscles,
your spiritual muscles lose
strength if they aren’t exercised.
Challenge your mind.
Remember when you were
in sixth grade and discovered
Algebra?! You may have hated
the homework, but it was doing
something wonderful in your
frontal cortex. It provoked a
healthy stimulation of neurons.
You can create the same
stimulation by reading, writing,
and doing simple math—like
balancing your checkbook.
Sleep well. Years ago, my
grandpa said that the best way to
enjoy a night of restful sleep was
to work outside in the sunshine.
Research today supports the
notion that exposure to natural
sunlight and fresh air release
chemicals into your blood
stream that enhance consistent
sleep patterns.

Nutrient of the
Month: Manganese
The human body needs small
amounts of manganese in order
to form healthy bones and skin.
The mineral also activates
enzymes that play an important
role in metabolism, as well as
antioxidants that protect cells
from free radical damage. Rich
sources of manganese include
oats, leafy greens, brown rice,
pineapple and cinnamon.
What better time than the
new year to sort through
cabinets, closets and drawers.
We all know the benefits
associated with recycling. Here’s
a couple of easy tips: Gently
used clothing and blankets are
always appreciated by the
clothing bank. Drop your old
eye glasses, no longer used
hearing aids and worn out
batteries by the Wheatland
Village Marketing Office. The
local Lions Club will see that
your contributions will be put to
good use. Thank you!
