2014 Marietta
Citizen of the
Year
Every year the Cobb Chamber
honors one individual as the
Marietta Citizen of the Year. In order
to award this recognition, we look
far and wide for an individual who
impacts the Marietta community.
The recipients of the individual’s
hands-on involvement are enlivened
and the quality of the community is
enhanced.
This same individual, with
his or her, boots to the ground, on
a mission to make the community
better in any way possible, may not
even live in Marietta. However, the
individual, living in Marietta or not,
knows the value of this community
and its inhabitants so much so that
they call Marietta home no matter
where he or she resides.
This year’s Citizen of the Year just so happens to be a long-time resident of Marietta
who has dedicated her life to serving others in need. She has given so much of her time to
our community charitable efforts. During her time as Mrs. Georgia, March of Dimes and the
importance of women taking folic acid prior to becoming pregnant to prevent birth defects
was her platform. She is a volunteer/board member who is walks the walk. When she takes
on a role, she is all in. She is an advocate for many organizations and has a passion to make
a difference in her community.
From participating in Destiny’s Daughters, providing leadership training and programs
for young girls to serving on the Center for Family Resources Board of Directors as Chair,
Terri Bunten Guthrie is a remarkable leader and is known for her passion and long standing
service to her community. Congratulations Terri Bunten Guthrie our 2014 Marietta Citizen
of the Year!

Preventing
Christmas Tree
Fires:
When buying a live tree, look for one
that is not shedding needles. If needles fall
off or branches snap when bent, the tree is
already too dry.
Keep trees watered. A mixture of
lemon-lime soda and water will keep a tree
moist longer.
Keep trees away from all heat sources
including fire places, stoves and room/
space heaters Please do not use candles on
a Christmas tree.
When purchasing an artificial tree, look
for the label “Fire Resistant”.
Secure the tree firmly in tree stand to
keep it from toppling over.
When tree becomes dry, promptly
discard it. Keep Cobb Beautiful is

lbs of food to local Cobb County families in need this week. This is an annual event for the
outreach ministries of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church. Through generous contributions
from the church parishioners, SVdP and the Knights were able to collect enough food and
turkeys for a complete dinner for 237 families.

economic freedom, we eventually lose all other freedoms. He closed with a quote from
George Washington’s farewell address, “We cannot guarantee success but we can guarantee

patriotic remarks received a standing ovation and concluded the evening on a high note.

KENNESAW MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY
New Cremation Garden of Reflection
Kennesaw Memorial Park in
Marietta has been serving Cobb,
Paulding and Cherokee counties
since 1953 and is rich with tradition.
Kennesaw Memorial Park offers the
peace and tranquility of a natural
setting and the wooded grounds are
carefully maintained to preserve
the park’s quiet serenity. The park
features 80 acres of spreading
oaks, flowering dogwoods and
azaleas and borders the historic
Kennesaw Mountain National Park.
Our experienced and knowledgeable
staff is able to serve families of
all faiths, beliefs, cultures and
backgrounds with the finest in
professional counseling, planning
and interment services. We offer
traditional burial, Lakeside or
Chapel Mausoleum entombment
or the inurnment of cremated remains at our lake side Garden of Reflection.
A permanent cremation memorial can be as simple or elaborate as you like, and there
are many options available. An urn can be placed into a niche or in a cremation bench
in a selected location. The urn can be placed in a single pillar or in a companion
pillar with a bronze memorial plaque personally designed. We have many cremation
options from scattering with a memorial engraved brick or small bronze plaque on
a granite pedestal. This can be a private service for family or with friends present.
You may have a personal experience or know someone who possesses the cremated remains
of a loved one. While this may not be something that is easy to talk about, it’s a reality.
Many people don’t realize you have to choose what to do with your loved
one’s cremated remains – Does placement in a niche align with her wishes?
Would he have wanted to be memorialized with a meaningful scattering?
What will my children/grandchildren do with the urn in the future?
In an effort to make this decision easier and more convenient for you, Kennesaw Memorial
Park Cemetery has created the Garden of Refection were you can conduct a memorial
service and scatter or inter cremated remains. This makes it possible to purchase a
permanent memorial site for future generations to have a place to visit, reflect and remember.
We understand losing a loved one is an emotional and difficult experience, and we
are committed to assisting families with compassionate, professional and personal
service. Please contact us if you need immediate assistance, or if you would like more
information about our services or Cremation Garden visit our website

Cobb EMC NAMED EMC OF THE YEAR
– Servant Leadership Applauded For unprecedented generosity and service to thousands of residents in five metro
Atlanta counties, Cobb EMC was recently named EMC of the Year and presented the 2014
Georgia EMC Community Service and Volunteerism Award.
“The contributions by Cobb EMC are so numerous that it’s difficult to capture all of
them,” says Bill Verner, senior vice president of External Affairs with Georgia EMC. “But
it’s safe to say that at every level in the organization, the responsibility to serve is enormous
and contributions reach every corner of the community—whether it’s through civic, cultural,
educational, humanitarian, or public safety assistance.”
According to Verner, Cobb EMC and its employees are major contributors in the exurbs
of Atlanta and to the state as a whole, providing leadership in education, school and youth
programs, charitable giving and community support.
Cobb EMC was praised for the numerous ways in which they give: community
donations, national charities and fundraising, public safety and financial support, all of
which benefit hundreds of worthy organizations and causes. In 2014, Cobb EMC donated
$365,000 in assistance to nearly 900 families through the Cobb EMC Electric Assistance
Fund, and more than $430,000 to 100 nonprofit and philanthropic organizations in its service
area through their Operation Round Up program.
A small sample of organizations benefitting from the co-op’s donations of time and
fundraising include the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Boy Scouts of America, Cobb
Library Foundation, Down Syndrome Association, Foster Care Support Foundation,
Habitat for Humanity, MUST Ministries, Special Olympics Georgia and United Way,
among numerous others.
Nominations for EMC of the Year were reviewed by an independent panel of judges
with a solid reputation in statewide volunteer circles. Serving as judges for the second
consecutive year were Phil Smith, John Turner and Niki Knox Vanderslice with the Georgia
Department of Community Affairs.
The purpose of the Georgia EMC Community Service and Volunteerism Award is to
spotlight the outstanding efforts and initiatives of EMC management, individual directors
and employees who are working to build stronger communities.
The Marietta-based cooperative was presented the Award during Georgia EMC’s
Annual Meeting on Nov. 10 in Savannah. To commemorate the occasion, a donation in the
co-op’s name will be made to a charity of its choice.
Cobb EMC is a member owned cooperative providing electricity to more than 175,000
residential and commercial members in Cobb, Bartow, Cherokee, Fulton, and Paulding
counties.
10 Reasons to List Your Home During the
Holiday Season Melissa Krudwig, “The Bear of Real Estate”
1. You may receive more money for your home now because you have less competition. 2. Your
home has a warm and inviting glow during the Holidays.
3. One of the highest percentages of “Listings Sold” to “Listings Taken” occur during this time
of year. 4. Winter prospects are more serious, focused buyers.
5. Throughout the Holiday Season, you may restrict showings during your personal family
events. 6. Buyers have more time to look at homes during the Holidays, especially during vacations.
7. January is traditionally the biggest transfer month and corporate transferees, who need to
buy a home now, can’t wait until spring. 8. The Holiday Season is a time of heightened consumer
spending. 9. When you sell during the winter, you have an opportunity to buy during the spring, when many
more homes are on the market. 10. Interest rates are still at historic lows, but are forecast to rise in
the new year. Call the The Bear of Real Estate - the Think Melissa Team TODAY if you would like to hear how

Cobb development by another name is
expansion
By Chairman Tim Lee, Cobb County A good customer service rep is one who says, “We know you
had other choices, and we’re glad that you chose to do business with
us.” In Cobb County, we’re getting the chance to say that quite a bit
as we see our plans for long-term economic expansion working.
Notice I didn’t say “economic development,” which typically
focuses largely on the quantity of new-business contributions to a
region’s economy. I mean expansion, where you also focus on the
quality of growth.
In September, I told the Council for Quality Growth that we need
to shift our way of thinking from exclusively economic development
to that of expanding opportunities. I define it as creating the kind of
jobs that will attract today’s youth who are getting their education
now so they won’t see the need to move out of Cobb County when

Psoriasis is a common lifelong chronic inflammatory multisystem disease with most
signs of the disorder noticeably of the skin; but can also involve the joints. Current research
suggests that this inflammatory disorder is immune-based and centered on the T cells located
in the dermis of the skin. Psoriasis presents with red, rough, flakey plaques on the body, and
scalp. Patient surveys’ show over 50% of patients are only moderately satisfied with their
treatment options. Treatment options are grouped into 3 categories: 1) topical agents (tar,
steroids, vitamin D3, retinoids, and calcineurin inhibitors; 2) Photo-therapy; 3) systemic
agents, including biologic therapies. The new research arm at Marietta Dermatology, is currently conducting several psoriasis
trials involving new, novel topical treatments. Patients are given ALL the information
regarding the trial, and what is expected from them throughout the trial process. Neither
the patient nor ourselves, sometimes do not know if they are receiving a “real” drug, or a
“placebo”; however, we would inform the patient of the possibility of a placebo. We also
do not charge the patients for their visits, lab work, ECGs, or study medication; nor do we
file any insurance claims for these visits. And finally, we offer a patient a stipend for their
time and travel between $200-$500 if they complete the study.
No matter the skin concern, Marietta Dermatology & The Skin Cancer Center is the
place in North Georgia for you and your family. We feel honored that you have chosen our
practice and look forward to treating your skincare needs.

SCOUTS CLEAR FORGOTTEN CEMETERY
by logan mossor
On Veteran’s Day 2014,
FOX 5 Atlanta televised a story
about Terrence Smith and his
son finding the overgrown and
forgotten graves of 40 World
War I and World War II soldiers
in the non-perpetual section of
Lincoln Cemetery. Our Assistant
Scoutmaster, Kevin Triplett,
with BSA Troop 723 of Powder
Springs, saw the story and asked
our Boy Scout Troop if we would
be willing to devote some time to
clean up the area as a potential
service project. Knowing that
these men had served our country
in times of war and sacrificed
their time to protect our freedoms,
we readily agreed to take on this
project.
On Saturday, November 15, members of Troop 723 and their leaders gathered saws,
hatchets, machetes, clippers, pruners, and whatever lawn clearing equipment we could
round up and traveled to the approximate 2 acres of overgrown land. We could see a few
marble headstones peeking out of a dense green jungly area so covered with trees, thick
ivy, and vines that it appeared impassable. We cut a path in to the headstones that were
visible, discovering as we cleared that the area of land we were working to clear was deeply
trenched in regular patterns. Our leaders explained to us, that at the time that burials were
being conducted remains had been buried in wooden caskets in rows, and that with time,
the caskets had rotted and the ground collapsed. As we cleared, we continued to find
more headstones, some still standing embedded in the ground, others having fallen into
the soft earth. Some were clearly military graves; others were civilian. As we cleared the
underbrush from the ground and hauled the fallen limbs and scrub trees away, we could see
a pattern of the graves sites all of which were buried around the 1960s.
Some of us cleaned headstones as we found them; others continued to clear the area of overgrown
brush. By the time we finished in the late afternoon of November 15, we had located a number of
World War I and World War II veterans’ graves that we marked with an American flag and saluted as
a sign of respect for their service.
Ten of us returned on Saturday, Nov 22. We estimate that anywhere from 200 to 300
graves were cleared in the non-perpetual care area of Lincoln Cemetery.
I wish I could say that our work at the abandoned cemetery in northwest Atlanta was done. The
sad fact is that we only cleared graves from the 1960s. The non-perpetual care section of the Lincoln
Cemetery goes all the way back to the 1920s and spans several acres. Now that a small section of the
area is cleared, we hope that some of the many unidentified graves can be identified, and that family
can be contacted and reunited with their lost loved ones. Until then, at least these gravesites have
been rediscovered and are getting the care, attention and respect that they deserve: departed from life,
but not forgotten.

SOMEONE TRUSTED THE CHURCH LAST NIGHT, AND THE CHURCH CAME THROUGH!
Rev. Sam Storey, Columnist
On a cold, dreary December evening, several hundred people gathered
at a large downtown church in Winston-Salem to celebrate the Christmas
season. Bishop Ernest Fitzgerald, present that evening, had gone down a
long hallway to help a small boy who was pushing against massive oak
doors trying to get outside. The boy was about 2 years old and as he pushed
he was crying as if his heart would break.
The Bishop picked him up, thinking he belonged to someone at one
of the Christmas parties but as he opened the doors and looked outside
he spotted an old-model car speeding away in the darkness. Gradually, it
dawned on him that the child he held in his arms had been abandoned.
Phone calls were made, and soon the church was filled with people
wanting to help in any way they could. Within moments, the local TV
stations interrupted their usual programs to ask if anyone knew the identity
of the little boy. The next morning, one of the city's newspapers put the child's picture on the front
page. Under the picture there was an article describing the events of the evening before. The article
began with this striking line: "Someone trusted the church last night, and the church came through!"
Bishop Fitzgerald later reflected on this event and wrote these words: It will be a long, long time
before I can forget that newspaper headline. So much of the world's future depends on the faithfulness
of the "People of God" to the "Great Commission." There is a deep hunger across our land as countless
people grope for answers to the deepest questions of the human spirit. The message of Christ speaks
to these questions, bringing hope and light to people who now stumble in the dark and live in despair.
Our world will be changed as the hearts of people are changed. Evangelism is no longer an option for
the church. It is essential to the survival of our world.
The line in that Winston-Salem newspaper is a haunting reminder of what the world expects of
the church. "Someone trusted the church last night, and the church came through!" May that always
be true!
In this Season of Advent and Christmas, let our prayer be: O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend
to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the
great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

of Marietta, Georgia. Email: [email protected].)
