Mao’s Golden Mangoes and the Cultural Revolution
Through April 26
In 1968, China was in a brief “mango-fever.”
After receiving a gift of mangoes from the
Pakistani foreign minister, Mao Zedong
sent the fruit to the “Worker-Peasant Mao
Zedong Thought Propaganda Teams.”
Mangoes, then unfamiliar in China,
became a temporary symbol of Chairman
Mao’s benevolence and love for the people.
This exhibition of mango-related objects
explores the interaction of material culture
and politics during this period.
Opening Reception:
Wed March 11 5–7pm
Free but R SV P required
Celebrating precious traditions and the
culture of baby carriers from Taiwan and
Southwestern China, Love and Blessings
presents extraordinary workmanship and
rich cultural symbolic meanings. Every
stitch and thread of embroidery work on
baby carriers is the deepest expression of a
mother’s affectionate embrace to her child.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Ministry
of Culture, Republic of China (Taiwan).

March 11 – July 5

religious and historical institutions in Tibet
and an active center for publication and

Literati Painting: A Genre Unique to Chinese Culture
Tues March 17 6:30–8:30pm
Lecturer: Ben Wang, Senior Lecturer of the
Humanities, China Institute, with Guest Musician
Blending poetry, calligraphy and painting,
Chinese literati painting glows as an
enchanted garden of art. In this lecture and
performance, two masters of the form will
be introduced: Qi Baishi (1864-1957), whose
art proclaims the triumph of the romantic
over the commonplace, and Pu Ru (18961963), whose works transport viewers to a

A Brush With Reality: Calligraphic Paintings by
Lobsang Choephel
March 13 – May 12
Opening Reception:
Fri March 13 6–8pm
Lobsang Choephel is a Tibetan artist and
master calligrapher born and raised in
Tibet, educated in India, and currently
living in New York. In A Brush With Reality,
Lobsang wields his sweeping brushstrokes
and spiritual faith to delve into a range of
human emotions, cosmological landscapes
and metaphysical truths. As an exile
who has spent most of his life separated
from his family in Tibet, he taps into the
experience and struggles of his own life
to explore brief yet penetrating insights
into themes ranging from loneliness to
friendship, from anger to compassion,
and from attachment to liberation.
