Son injures
80yr old
mother
Malda, Jan 16 : In a
brutal incident today
morning, an 80 yr old
woman was allegedly
injured by her wayward
son following a property
dispute which occurred
at around 7 am.
According to the
police, the victim has
been identified as
Baroda Rajak, resident of
Sujapur Gaon in
Kaliachak district. The
victim has four children.
The three elder children
were married and wellsettled but the youngest
son Sibu Rajak had
fallen into bad company.
The family had
entered into a dispute
over the sharing of the
parental property after
Baroda reportedly
disagreed to distribute
her property. The
disagreement left Sibu
seething with anger.
Police revealed that the
son hit his mother with a
heavy iron rod on her
head and fled from the
scene. Baroda is
severely injured and is
currently undergoing
medical treatment in
Malda Medical College.
A case has been
registered under Section
302 IPC, while efforts are
on to nab Sibu. (HS)

and local taxi drivers.

the drivers to obey traffic
rules and regulation and added that every individual has
the responsibility to maintain safety.
Gangtok, Jan 16: With an
aim of spreading awareness
on fuel and natural gas resource conservation, ‘Oil
and Gas Conservation Fortnightly 2015’, was inaugurated here today at the premises
of SNT Bus stand, Development Area, Gangtok. The fifteen day long awareness programme will continue till January 31 and will be spreading the message of effective
and efficient use of fuels and
natural gases.
The inaugural programme
was attended by Advisor,
Urban Development Department and former minister,
Satish Chandra Rai along
with Secretary, Food and Civil
Supplies, D.P. Sharma and
representatives of Oil India,
Sikkim. The program was organized by Indian Oil Corporation on behalf of Petroleum
Ministry, Government of India.

D.P Sharma in his address
urged the people to use fuels and natural gas resourcefully. He suggested the people to use public transport as
often as possible to save fuel
and also recommended the
people to cut down on the
use of home LPG to save
money and gas.
Chandra Rai also echoed
the same message and urged
the people to save fuel and
natural gas for the future
generation as these resources are highly exhaustible.
The officials of the IOC
informed that during the
course of three days, an IOC
vehicle will visit the North,
South and West district of
the state spreading awareness about conserving fuel
and natural gas resources.
Around forty students
participated in painting competition held earlier in the day.
Later a mass rally was also
taken out from the premises
of SNT Bus stand till Palzor
stadium to drive home the
message of conservation.
Gangtok, Jan 16: Nine lifters from Sikkim will be representing state in National
Strength lifting championship to be held at Phaguwara
in Punjab. The 22 Junior, Subjunior, Senior, Master Federation Cup, National Strength
lifting Championship 20142015 which will start from January 23-26 at Guru Ravi Das,
Gurudwara ground, Phaguara, Punjab.
“Four women and five
men will be participating in
the championship. The
shortlisted participants were
provided with month long
training in the White Hall
Government Gym located at
Tathangchen’ informed Pema
Dorjee coach cum participant, Sikkim Strengthlifting
Association.

the fourth and like every time
we are hopeful to bring in
more medals this time as well'
added Pema.
He also expressed his gratitude towards Lotus Tours

championship.

cum sale
Kalimpong, Jan 16: The
Himalayan Trust for Natural History Art (HTNHA)
is set to organize a 3-day
art exhibition cum sale in
Kalimpong. The event wil
be held at the Vrindavan
School of Kalimpong
starting 6-8 February, next
month, 10am onward. The
three-day exhibition will
showcase natural history
art/painting, drawings,
pottery, jewelry designs
inspired by nature and
drawn by the students of
Relli Valley, Kalimpong.
“In the past four years,
the children have gone
through a lot of phases
where their creativity, and
skills were tested several
times.
Despite attending regular schools and carrying
out daily chores like
tending to their cattle,
cutting grass, collecting
firewood, cooking, cleaning, and looking after
their homes, etc, they still
found time for creativity.
And this I believe has
been their victory" said
their trainer Hemlata
Pradhan, who is also a
renowned artist of Darjeeling. “The pictures on
display will be up for sale,
and 50% of its proceeds
generated will be used for
the welfare of the students of Relli Valley”,

Kalimpong January 16: A
five days training programme on Fisheries began
here on Friday at Darjeeling Krishi Vigyan Kendra
organized by the Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries
and Research (Bhimtal) and
GTA. Eight officers from
eight different blocks within the GTA area attended the
training on Jhora fisheries,
informed the chief executive officer of Fish and Farmers Development Agency
(FFDA) Sonam Tshewang.
More than 40 people attended the training which
was conducted by mentors
like Dr. Debajit Sharma, S.K
Gupta and Dr. Ritesh S.
Tandel all from ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries and Research.
Dr. Debajit Sharma reportedly threw light on the
importance of fisheries
where the main code explained by him was to culture coldwater fishes in familiar environmental condition by stocking smaller size
of local fishes in exhumed
ponds or jhoras which is to
be fed by perennial spring
water, continuously.
The motive of the training was also elucidated by
Sharma which is to educate
people from the hills in Fishery management and to develop them economically.
He said, “Preserving the endangered species of fish is
very essential in the hills
and this is another motive
of the training”.
The experts said that
there is higher possibility of
raising fish in the hills but a
proper water source essential for the development in
fishery is equally important.
Among the varieties of
fishes that is possible to
raise in the hills are Katla-
which is very suitable species for commercial fish
farming in many South
Asian countries, Grass
carp- a herbivorous freshwater fish which belongs to
the family of cyprinidae,
(the only species of the genus ctenopharyngodon)
and Common carp fish
which is a widespread freshwater fish found in
eutrophic waters in lakes
and large rivers in Europe
and Asia.
Kolkata, Jan 16: West Bengal Transport Minister Madan
Mitra, who was arrested by
CBI in connection with the
Saradha chit fund scam, was
on Friday remanded to 14 days'
judicial custody by a court.
Judge Haradhan Mukherjee of Alipore Court rejected
the bail plea and remanded
Mitra to judicial custody till
January 30, 2015, while allowing the CBI to conduct judicial interrogation of the accused in the presence of a
defence counsel between
January 17 and January 24.
Defence lawyer Ashok
Mukherjee said that Mitra
was already in detention for
36 days and his further custodial stay was not required.
Moving the bail plea, he said
that although the accused
was detained for long, CBI
could not file the charge
sheet against Mitra so far.
At the start of the hearing, the judge showed displeasure with a section of the
defence lawyers who shouted inside the court seeking
Mitra's relief from detention.
The court room was packed
with supporters of Mitra who
shouted ‘Vande Mataram’
Jalpaiguri, Jan 16 : A
leopard, which was
preying on goats and
chickens at Lishliwar tea
garden of Malbazar for
the last few days, was
caught in a trap laid by
the forest officials in
Jalpaiguri district today.
The prowling leopard
was trapped in a net with
a goat as bait at the tea
garden in Lishliwar. This
is the fifth leopard
captured within three
months. “The leopard
would be set free at the
Gorumara jungle”, said a
forest official. According
to locals, there are more
leopards in the tea
garden area, for which
they have urged the
forest officials to lay
down more of such traps
for the people’s safety.

Unidentified body
Jalpaiguri, Jan 16: An
unidentified body was
found on the tracks of
Dhupguri railway station
today at 8 am. According to the railway police
officer Supriya Rai, the
dismembered body
appears to be thrown
from the up-Intercity
Express moving. “We
have not found any
identification with the
deceased, hence
nothing can be commented on the matter”
said Rai.
