ARNDT TUESDAY - SATURDAY 11-7PM / SUNDAY 11-6PM 9 LOCK ROAD #03-21 GILLMAN BARRACKS SINGAPORE 108937 T: (65) 673 40775 E: [email protected] W: WWW.ARNDTBERLIN.COM Utopian Pictures: Gilbert & George 19/01-03/04 For the first time, Gilbert & George will vist Singapore with a new body of pictures especially for the show at ARNDT. The London based Gilbert & George met as students at the prestigious St Martin’s School of Art in London in 1967. Their revolutionary approach of making themselves into ‘living sculptures’ by incorporating private life into the art practice made them famous already by 1969. Not even two decades later the extravagant and prolific duo won the Turner Prize, Britain’s most prestigious art award (1984). The prize was followed by other major achievements such as representing Britain at the 51st Venice Biennale (2005), earning a 40th anniversary retrospective at Tate Modern (2007) and many more. ARNDT 20+2 Anniversary Show EXHIBITION AT HELUTRANS 15/01-15/02 ARNDT Singapore is delighted to announce its 20+2 anniversary celebrations. January 2015 will mark our 2nd year in Singapore and will also coincide with our 20th birthday in Berlin. To mark the grand celebrations, Matthias Arndt has curated a special anniversary show. The exhibition will comprise of new artist commissions of leading Southeast Asian and international artists from ARNDT’s vast portfolio carefully built over Matthias Arndt’s 27 years of experience expert in international contemporary art. ART SEASONS GALLERY TUESDAYS TO SATURDAYS 11AM – 7PM BIG HOTEL, 200 MIDDLE ROAD, #01-02, SINGAPORE 188980 T: (65) 67416366 E: [email protected] W: WWW.ARTSEASONSGALLERY.COM Large Pigment: Yu Aijun 15/01–07/02 For Yu Aijun's first solo exhibition in Singapore, he minimized the elements of painting to paper, pencil and black pigment only. As far as his paintings are concerned, the visual liveliness and vitality, and the profundity and significance of the themes are unnecessary. It would be better to say that he is trying to invent a lingual concept rather than a new language. Here the subject is overwhelmingly intensified and the objects collectively concealed. The canvas has become a battlefield. For a pair of hands with ample school training, he has to be in control of the canvas but the control is often rendered superfluous given the preset rules, giving rise to a violent clash between empiricism and visual uncertainties. The result is that although his techniques, medium, style and themes are vivid, they exist only as surreal beings, like meaningless pictorial fragments floating over the canvas. Nature, Yu Aijun CAPE OF GOOD HOPE ART GALLERY 140 HILL STREET, #01-06, OLD HILL STREET POLICE STATION BUILDING SINGAPORE 179369 T: (65) 6733 3822 E: [email protected] W: WWW.CAPEOFGOODHOPE.COM.SG Impressionistic Collection 16/01–15/02 Wim Delvoye, Deux Bacchantes ART PLURAL GALLERY MONDAY - SATURDAY 11AM - 7PM (CLOSED ON SUNDAYS) 38 ARMENIAN STREET, SINGAPORE 179942 T: (65) 6636 8360 E: [email protected] W: WWW.ARTPLURALGALLERY.COM Transcontemporary: Armen Agop 22/01–21/02 Transcontemporary, a solo exhibition by Egyptian artist Armen Agop. Running from 22nd to 25th January 2015, Transcontemporary unveils new granite and bronze sculptures that are both free-standing and wall-mounted. Armen Agop's sculptures have been called futuristic, other-worldy, UFOs, and at the same time ancient, spiritual and meditative. They are forms that seem familiar and yet unusual. They may remind you of something you haven't yet seen. This may be in part due to the timelessness of the material he chooses and it may be due to his approach, which results in precise forms that demand contemplation. Cape of Good Hope Art Gallery presents the Impressionistic Collection in celebration of SG50, 50th anniversary of Singapore. The exhibition presents artworks by Singaporean artists that exhibits an influence of Impressionistic style. These local artists are Ang Ah Tee, Choy Weng Yang, Goh Beng Kwan, Koeh Sia Yong, Lim Leong Seng, Low Puay Hua and Nai Swee Leng. Impressionism has influenced Singapore artists since the mid -20th century when the regional Nanyang style was established. The Nanyang painting style drew from both the essence of traditional Chinese ink painting and the Parisian impressionism movement. This influence is reflected in their paintings which reveal hints of the characteristic impressionist style with the skilful employment of textured brushstrokes, open compositions and dynamic lighting. The use of such techniques allowed Singapore artists to veer towards modern impressionist expression and at the same time capture the essence of local artistic flavour. After: Michel Platnic 22/01–21/02 After, a solo exhibition by Israeli artist Michel Platnic, running from 22nd January to 21st February 2015, After is a unique exhibition experience featuring dramatic ‘living paintings’ presented form of video installations and large-scale prints. Using a complex combination of traditional and innovative mediums, Platnic’s portraits, stylistically described as ‘after’ the iconic Francis Bacon, come to life, moving within their frames as though the characters exist within a microcosmic universe. After Three Studies of Lucien Freud, Michel Platnic ART-2 GALLERY MONDAY - SATURDAY 11AM - 7PM (CLOSED ON SUNDAYS & PUBLIC HOLIDAYS) 140 HILL STREET #01-03, OLD HILL STREET POLICE STATION SINGAPORE 179369 T: (65) 6338 8713 E: [email protected] W: WWW.ART2.COM.SG CHAN HAMPE GALLERIES TUESDAY – SUNDAY 11AM – 7PM (CLOSED MONDAYS AND PUBLIC HOLIDAYS) RAFFLES HOTEL ARCADE, 328 NORTH BRIDGE ROAD UNIT # 01-21 T: (65) 6338 1962 E: [email protected] W: WWW.CHANHAMPEGALLERIES.COM Ataraxy: Ruben Pang 16/01–08/02 Ataraxy, Ruben Pang's 5th solo exhibition, extracts creative energy from disarray and entropy, thus realizing the state of tranquility the term implies. In each painting, various artistic personalities find themselves in psychodramatic scenarios with their subconscious drives personified through figures in constant change. The paintings portray creators in the midst of contemplation, decision making, and other obstacles. Pang finds affinities and luminaries in both historical and fictional artists, these works attempt to connect the dots and unravel the underlying significance of and between the subjects he consistently finds himself drawn to. In this sense, Ataraxy can be considered a collection of annotations in which the artist finds sanctuary. 15/01–14/02 Renowned for her distinctive depictions of architectural spaces in Chinese ink, Hong Sek Chern addresses the issues of urbanization and identity. Reflecting a masterful interplay of collapsed lines and multi-point perspectives, Hong expresses the influence of invading nature by infusing concrete reality with the subjective experience. Coping with Space and Time, Mona Choo 16/01–15/02 In this exhibition, Arkiv Vilmansa will present new works with a new medium of layered acrylic boards. In the beginning, he was very unsure to make a work out of acrylic board. He thinks that he is the only artist who has done so. The technique is very difficult and there are many risks involved. Every layer of the acrylic board needs to be glued tightly until there are no air gaps using epoxy resin. He explained thtat this medium was the most difficult works that he ever created as an artist. He said. "canvas has been commonly used by everyone. I want to find something new and difficult that has never been done before." Since his debut in 2005, Arkiv has become a prominent name in the lowbrow art and designer toy culture. His work has been featured in galleries in US, Germany and Indonesia. With this exhibition, Arkiv presents new characters that just entered his world of imagination that is wild yet represent deep meaning in his career as an artist. The character Mickiv which has been present throughout his career as an artist, becomes more wild and free with bolder strokes and brighter colors. The concept of layering paints and acrylic board symbolize the different phases of his career first as a Graphic Designer, then as an Architect and Artist. This is where he came with the concept of Past, Present and Future. For Arkiv, his past shapes him as an artist today. For Arkiv, the Future is everything and he has a reversed idea about it whereas most people would think of past, present and future. As an artist, he always thinks that the Future is his world of imagination and the background is him as a graphic designer and architect. The Future shadows his process of making art and acts as a guide to finish the works that he has never done before. The Future for him, is the most important of all, and the Past and Present are merged to support his future. The roles are all reversed. Occupying an entire gallery space, teamLab’s new digital interactive installation is set to be an immersive experience that changes constantly depending on the viewer’s movement. Other works include a witty display of words with Jenny Holzer’s projection of 232 truisms and Teppei Kaneuji’s offbeat animation of objects in orbit around a tower. The constellation of projections and screens plotted around the exhibition draws the viewer in, encouraging one to ponder in wonderment while meandering within and between the artworks. Passenger, Ruben Pang A Thing of Beauty: Dawn Ng 16/01–25/01 A THING OF BEAUTY is a series of photographed installations of small, common objects — the objectified minutia of everyday life culminating in a wonderland of monochromatic shades and shapes. Drawing from symbolism and surrealism, A THING OF BEAUTY forges unexpected relationships between objects from different worlds to create a new visual language through the use of colour, scale, shape and texture. If objects be words or codes, each installation is a puzzle, secret or poem unto itself, containing both the absurdities and profoundness of life found in a grand orchestra of stuff. 17/01–08/03 Partners & Mucciaccia presents the solo exposition ofJacques Villeglé, one of the most important living French artists, curated by Dominique Stella. As the only French artist whom the New York Museum of Modern Art dedicates an exhibition to, his works are widely exhibited in museums and galleries around world, notably MoMa (New York), Tate Gallery (London) and Centre Pompidou (Paris). Currently, his works are being exhibited at Musée Tinguely in Basel and will be continuing his next exhibition at Schirn Kunsthalle of Frankfurt. Hiroshi Senju, one of Japan’s most celebrated artists, presents new fluorescent waterfall paintings in Day Falls/Night Falls. Noted worldwide for his sublime waterfall and cliff images, Hiroshi Senju combines a minimalist visual language rooted in Abstract Expressionism with ancient techniques unique to Japan. Jacques Villeglé’s exhibition at Partners & Mucciaccia will showcase the Nouveau Réalisme of the artist’s works, through a retrospective made by more than 50 artworks, from the ‘décollages d’affiches’ of the Sixties to the lasts ripped posters realized in the 2000, including his recent works elaborated with his socio-politics signs technique. This exhibition highlights the innovative nature of the ‘recycling techniques’, the artist’s favourite, which allows him the possibility of understanding the world by an anarchic and poetic interpretation. In January 2015, iPreciation will present the works of four Singaporean artists – Chris Yap (b.1969), Wee Kheng-Li (b.1971), Wang Ruobing (b.1975) and Sai Hua Kuan (b.1976). This show aims to promote greater awareness and understanding of contemporary fine arts photography practice that currently exists here through Singapore artists who are keen to emphasize the role of visual intelligence, critical thinking / theory, and philosophy in engaging with the world through human eyes. The works will focus on the poetics of space and place, tensions of history and contemporaneity, all captured through scenes of the streets in Asia, from Singapore to Japan to Indonesia to China. 15/01–07/02 Galerie Belvedere is proud to present the exhibition “Best of Asian Art” which celebrates contemporary painters from Asia. This show is the opportunity to discover the works of exciting artists from Asia with an international dimension. Most of them have had their works auctioned and have participated in exhibitions internationally. Our award-winning artists are from Indonesia, The Philippines and South Korea: Arie Smit, Paul Husner, Sudarisman, Faizal, Herry Dim, Krijono, Ugo Untoro, Lydia Velasco, Carlo Magno, Jerry Morada, Om Mee Ai. Solo Exhibition by Pan Dehai 16/01–15/02 Operation Quinperoise, Jacques Villegle REDSEA GALLERY DAILY 9.30AM - 9PM BLOCK 9 DEMPSEY ROAD, #01-10 DEMPSEY HILL, SINGAPORE 247697 T: (65) 6732 6711 E: [email protected] W: WWW.REDSEAGALLERY.COM Solo Exhibition by Cha Jong-Rye 22/01–15/02 Internationally renowned Korean sculptor, Cha Jong-Rye, lets her material, wood, steer her practice, unveiling the inner thoughts as it takes the shape of her hands. The natural smoothness of the wood emerges in the form of lights and shadows, which come to life with subtle energy, and manifests itself as an earthy sensuality that hints at the spiritual character of humanity. Cha Jong-Rye’s works are a part of numerous private collections and exhibited in solo and group shows globally. Six young Chinese artists at the forefront of the new generation, they employ a wide range of media, materials and strategies in their investigation into the multiple meanings of machine. As an artificial complex, machines both extend and restrict our perceptions and actions. Together, the artists bridge the gap between the mental and physical world in extracting metaphors for the modern city life from the machineobject. The works will explore processes and effects of technology, globalisation, industrialisation and the mechanisation of the artist’s body and labour. Pan Dehai is no doubt one of the most established Chinese Contemporary artists today. Over the past twenty years, he has been widely known for creating the image of the ‘Fat Corn Men’ in his works. In form, the ‘Fat Corn Men’ are a synonym of affluent materialistic life and various desirers; yet in content they are often a synonym of simple-minded people, and when the image of these Corn Men is connected with the social, political and life scenes during the red era, these figures dressed in blue uniforms give us a sense of hardly understandable humor and absurdity, a reminder that there is still a small-peasant mentality and other feudal ideas in our pursuit for materialistic desires today. In his latest showcase of works for this solo exhibition, Pan Dehai continues to bring forward this concept but through a more subtle way of expression. Our everyday life is comprised mainly of petty things and trifling matters. However, to ‘fuss over’ them is not without sense. To observe them carefully can bring some kind of change to ourselves, to experience this change will bring our thoughts and feelings in the stream of our past and present as well as stimulate our potential talents, to allow us to go back to the provenance of art and the departure of life. Ju Ming’s Taichi Outdoor Exhibition at Singapore Botanic Gardens 17/01–16/04 This outdoor public exhibition of Ju Ming’s world-class Taichi series bronze work will be its inaugural show in South-East Asia. It will feature 15 of Ju Ming’s monumental Taichi sculptures, set within the green landscaped gardens of Singapore Botanic Gardens, providing the general public a chance to enjoy art in an outdoor public space. With the main thrust of contemporary Asian sculpture development lying in the new interpretation of forms that interconnect modern civilization and its traditional culture, Ju Ming seeks to marry the spirit of Chinese traditional painting and calligraphy with his modern abstract forms in Taichi. An ode to the ubiquitous city lights of contemporary existence, Senju’s waterfalls hover between night and day as he straddles the realms of industry and nature, the material and the ethereal. Kukoku Tamura’s intricate fusion of painting and calligraphy produce many captivating symbolic elements in his artworks that confound and intrigue the viewer. Using sumi as a primary medium, dynamic calligraphy brush strokes are prominently displayed in Kukoku’s artworks, distinguishing his work from others. Blank spaces are also a commonality in the artist’s work. Assisted by Masashi Ozaki, a well-known printmaker in Japan, Kukoku has notably dedicated much of his time to lithography, a method used in his paintings. This exhibition will display at least 15 of Kukoku’s abstract paintings under his ‘Ancient Fantasy’ series. The exhibition and artwork titles are rendered in Cabacano, a Filipino creole language derived from Spanish and widely used in Zamboanga. When describing his works, Jumalon often talks about specific faces and spaces that inspire him. His body of work can be characterised by an ongoing exploration of personal, cultural and artistic identites, which are often fluid and interlinked. In 'Juramentado', Filipino culture and history are explicitly linked to his own experiences and family history, in layered images populated by figures both real and mythical.
