PORTLOCK HELPS BUTTE SAVE THE FIREWORKS A 4th of July tradition in Butte was in jeopardy this year, when news broke out that the organization responsible for the fireworks show was in debt. Unless $31,290 was paid to a Bozeman fireworks firm, there would be no fireworks this year in Butte. When word of the trouble got out, Chris Ackerman, station manager for KAAR, KMBR and KXTL and his staff, launched a fund-raiser and with community support, including many large-dollar donations, they raised more than double the amount needed. John Hanley, President/CEO of Portlock Software, heard about the trouble the community was in. He immediatley stepped up and began the CEO Challenge. He donated $600 and challenged any other CEO in the community to match his donation. Through the combined community efforts, a total of $71,000 was raised - ensuring a fireworks show for not only this year - but many years to come! √ Novell NetWare can move a block of data at a rate of 30 120 blocks per second! √ Storage Manager currently supports CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVDRW, DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM in DVD writers. √ Portlock is in the process of opening an office in Perth, Australia. Portlock Software announces that Storage Manager now supports the Panasonic LF-D311SC (DVD-RAM). Portlock Software and Panasonic have been working together to add support for the Panasonic LF-D311SC. Storage Manager now supports CDR, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM. Now, IT administrators can safely save their data with the confidence that it can’t be erased or copied over. This new protection is made possible by the drives’ support for the new DVD-RAM format. Additionally, DVD-RAM discs offer increased compatibility with most existing and future DVD-ROM drives. DVDs have been identified as an effective storage medium for backups and disaster recovery. With Storage Manager, an IT administrator can write a 4.5 GB image in just 22 minutes. “The advantages of this storage solution are truly exciting. The Panasonic LFD311SC (DVD-RAM) is inexpensive, offers boot-ability, a very easy to understand interface, and media that lasts 30-100 years. This method of storage is practical, convenient and affordable,” said John Hanley, President of Portlock Software. “Combining Storage Manager’s features with Panasonic’s DVD technology will change the way IT administrators think about backups and disaster recovery. Adopting this new way of storage management will save their companies time and money.” For More Information Contact: Jeff Hartwick, Marketing Manager, Portlock Software, (406) 723-5200. Page5 August 2002 TRICKS OF THE TRADE... Tips and Techniques from the experts of Portlock Q: Will Storage Manager support compression during Image/Restore? A: Yes, Storage Manager can compress the image as it is being written. When writing images to IDE or SCSI tape drives that provide hardware compression, do not en able software compression. For example, When the image will be going to a workstation, select Software Write Compression. Q: How fast are the image and restore features of Storage Manager? A: Very fast. The image and restore features of Storage Manager are a third generation design. Storage Manager can image at 26 MB / sec (1560 MegaBytes per minute) and restore at 7 MB / sec (420 MegaBytes per minute) if the disk drives and tape drives support these speeds. Using 100 Mb Ethernet, we routinely see speeds of 7 MB /sec. This means that a NetWare server with 10 GB of data can be restored in under an hour. The compression level screen contains options to select the compression level of the image. The levels range from 1 - 10. 1 being the lowest compression ratio and 10 being the highest compression ratio. Portlock Software is very interested in any comments regarding Storage Manager.
