인류가 귀를 소유하게 된 이후 초기 단계에, 귀는 그저 생존 경쟁에서 도움이 되는 것뿐이었을 것이다.
하지만 원시인이 어느 날 귀에서 다른 종류의 흥밋거리와 가치를 발견하게 되는 것을 상상해볼 수 있
다. 그가 어떤 단순한 소리를, 아마도 자기 활시위가 팅하고 울리는 소리나 부러진 갈대에 바람이 부는
소리를 듣는 것이 그 자체로 즐거운 일이라는 것을 알게 되는 것을 상상할 수 있다. 그날 음악이 생겨
났고, 그날부터 오늘날까지 많은 시대와 많은 민족의 무수한 역군들이 기쁨을 주는 종류의 새로운 소리
를 발견하기 위해, 그리고 최고의 즐거움을 선사하도록 이 소리들을 함께 섞고 엮는 기술을 숙달하기
위해 애써 왔다. 그 결과는 이런저런 음악이 이제 대부분의 문명화된 사람들의 삶에서 크게 중요하다는
것이다.
