PE News & Information
Helmets are needed in P.E. from Tuesday 1/20 through Friday 2/6
Laurelhurst’s bike unit will start TODAY, January 20h and last through February 6th. We partner with Cascade Bicycle Club and borrow their BMX bicycles for our unit. Cascade’s bicycles are usually a good match for students in 25th grades. I have balance bikes (without pedals) for students that will be working to learn to ride. I also have some smaller bikes for new/younger
riders. If you have a rider in K-2 and they have a bike they like to ride and you can get it to school feel free to bring it on their P.E. days. Students in
3rd -5th do not need to bring a bike. We could use volunteers for the K-1 classes for the first week to help with adjusting helmets!
Please have a properly fitting helmet at school for your student to wear on PE days.
Cascade provides some helmets, but students need to wear hair nets as a precaution for lice.
New Art Event This Wednesday January 21st, 6- 7:30 pm
ART EXPLORERS NIGHT! Come and experience art with your family and with the Masters! There will be 4 stations where you will be able to create
Hokusai block prints, Wan Qingli Chinese brush and ink paintings, Gaudi with the STEAM team and an all school Basquiat painting. Don't miss the
end of the night- Red Painted Chicken Feet walk. It will be a night to remember! Donations accepted, but not required.

We are in the 4th Quarter!!!! Our procurement deadline is quickly approaching!
Thank you parents who have sent in your procurement form or sent in cash donations. We are excited by the

Theme Days Coming Up!
The 5th grade student leadership activity committee would like to liven up January a bit with some “Spirit Days.”
Thursday, January 22nd will be Twin/Multiples Day. They can pair up, dress up as a group, or even have a class theme such as everyone in room
__ are wearing blue shirts. We have revised the theme to Twin/Multiples Day.
Thursday, January 29th will be Opposite Day. Do something that’s opposite such as:
• Wear one ponytail up and one down.
• If you usually dress very casually, come in formal attire.
• Dress the opposite as someone else: they wear red top/blue bottom; you wear red bottom/blue top.
• Mismatch seems to also fit the theme, such as:
o Color hair different colors
o Switch one shoe with another person
o Wear mismatched socks or shoes
o Wear mismatched top and bottom
o Etc.
There’s a lot of creativity for this day. As long as it’s appropriate and you consider it opposite, then it’ll work.

Instrumental Music Mini Performance on Feb 10th
The 4th and 5th grade Instrumental Music students have been working hard to learn to play their instruments. Please attend our “mini-performance”
on February 10 at 2:50 pm to see what we’ve learned so far this year!
New Auditorium Chairs!
Thanks to generous grants from Intermec Corporation and FOLF (Friends of Laurelhurst Foundation), we are thrilled to announce the arrival of
200 new stacking chairs and rolling storage carts. This investment in our school will positively impact generations to come. A HUGE THANK YOU!
Science Fair 2015 is on Wednesday, April 9th From 6-8 pm
The 2015 Aki Kurose Laurelhurst Science Fair is happening in April. This year’s theme is TRANSFORMATIONS IN SCIENCE. Students will build
and display experiments which have utilized the Scientific Method! Stay tuned. Registration packets will be out next month!

Math In Focus Parent Night
6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, at two Seattle elementary schools.
Stevens Elementary in Capitol Hill and Olympic View Elementary in Maple Leaf will host the hour-long sessions, open to all parents, relatives and
friends who support district students at home. Spanish and possibly Somali and Amharic translators will be present, but child care will not be provided. A trainer representing the Math in Focus publisher will provide insight on the “bar modeling” concept -- a basic component of the Singapore
method-based Math in Focus texts, adopted by Seattle Public Schools in June 2014. The trainer also will review tips for helping students with homework and will walk parents through the concrete-pictorial-abstract progression concept within the texts.
February is Literacy Month – “It’s Never Too Soon To Love Shakespeare”
William Shakespeare has had a great influence on our language and culture. Ever seen the “Lion King” – Shakespeare’s fingerprints are all over it.
This year we will be devoting Literacy Month as an opportunity to let our young ones know that Shakespeare is fun, fantastic, accessible and actionpacked! Mr. Brown will be introducing various elements during each classes Library Period leading up to Literacy Night, scheduled for Wednesday
February 25. The evening will be highlighted by a 40 minute production of “Twelfth Night” by Greenstage followed by a Question and Answer session.
The evening would not be complete without the family favorite “Book Swap”. More details to follow! We will also be adding a Book Drive Contest. On
arrival at literacy night, students can turn in a NEW book and receive a raffle ticket for each book donated. Prizes will be drawn at the end of the
evening. All books will be donated to an educational non-profit for children. If you are shopping for books this holiday season, it might be good to
grab a few extra (preferred reading level third to fifth grade) while there are bargains to be had!

Classic Books Sign-Up Deadline is FRIDAY!
Attention all book lovers! Classic book participation forms are due on Friday, January 23rd. If your child wants to participate in this fun and educational book club, please turn your participation form into the office or to your teacher by Friday, January 23! If you need a participation form, you can
find one in the office, or download them from the Laurelhurst website. Please note that each grade reads a different set of books, so make sure that
you have the appropriate list of books for your third, fourth, or fifth grader!
Also, if you plan on your child participating please let the organizers know if your child has food allergies. Please email this to Deanna Irwin-Sires at

SPS Open Enrollment is February 23 – March 6
The Open Enrollment period is your best opportunity to request a different school or program for your student. You must first register your student for
school, and then you can submit your Choice request between Feb. 23 and Mar. 6.
You can choose to apply for another attendance area school including K-8 schools; an option school; or programs such as Montessori, Spectrum,
and Highly Capable Cohort (formerly APP).

JAMS – Jane Addams Middle School New Family Information Night

Come and learn about all that Jane Addams Middle School has to offer. We will begin at 6:30, with a short presentation in the auditorium and then
have several breakout sessions by subject area, allowing new students and parents to meet teachers, learn more, and see our newly remodeled
areas. Later in the spring, we will invite students back for scheduling of classes and community building.
If you're thinking about middle schools for your child, please consider Hazel Wolf K-8. We are Seattle’s first E-STEM (environmentally-focused
science, technology, engineering, math) school, offering electives such as MESA, art, drama, music, choir, PE, and foreign language, all in a creative
and dynamic environment. Come join us for an open house tour — we’ll be showing off our new, temporary location near Greenlake, and talking all
about our groundbreaking E-STEM program. All families and students are welcome. See you there!

LASER Leaps (Before/After School Enrichment Classes)

Winter Leaps Session will begin the week of February 2nd. Sign-ups began January 5th, 2015. You can pick up a class list and sign up
form in the LASER portable or the LEAPS bulletin board in the Laurelhurst main entrance.
Rising Stars Pre-K (Preschool)

Day of discovery! Pre-K camp day Friday, January 30th from 9:00am-4:00pm Cost $40/day
Location: Pre-K classroom - includes field trip to Everett Children's Museum
Any child can sign-up from ages 4-6 (doesn't have to be a part of LASER program)
Can sign-up in LASER Pre-K classroom by January 28th at 6pm.

New At LASER
Clubs have started centered on Common Core and Habits of Mind that give our kids a chance to dig deeper into topics of interest. Clubs are not a
given, they are an opportunity. The clubs are taking part during programming time from 4:45pm-5:30pm. These clubs are in addition to an
art/creative activity and group game options. Our clubs this fall include:
• Monday-No club.
• Tuesday-Cooking around the World with David. The kids will create snacks they can take to a Super Bowl Party.
• Wednesday-Masters of Painting with Sara. The students will continue their still life drawings.
• Thursday-Multicultural Exploration with Sebastian. They will be picking individual country projects.
• Friday-Comic book club with Travis

Positive Parenting of School Age Children
Join Anita Garcia Morales for this free, fun class for parents/caregivers who want to foster respectful and joyful relationships with children aged 5-12.
During this six week class there will be discussions about effective discipline (how to be kind and firm at the same time), understanding your child’s
behavior, and creating an environment of mutual caring and respect.
You will explore parenting styles and work on creating some tools for both self care and for building strong foundations for a positive lifelong relationship with your child. Limited, free childcare is available for children 5-12 years old

Join the more than 1,000 boys and girls from your neighborhood who play tee ball, coach-pitch baseball, machine-pitch softball, and competitive
levels of baseball and softball.
Registration deadlines: Baseball - January 24th and Softball – January 31st

Northeast Seattle Little League is your neighborhood little league – serving families who live in the area bounded by the ship canal, NE 110th Street,
Lake Washington, and 25th Avenue NE/Lake City Way. *BOUNDARIES Little League has amended its residency requirements to allow children to
play in the local league whose boundaries include where the school they attend is located. So, if a child’s school is located within the NESLL boundaries, that child can now play with their school friends in NESLL!!
Kids aged 5-7 play tee ball. Kids 7-8 play farm league (either coach-pitch baseball or machine-pitch softball). Older age groups play in kid-pitch
leagues, and teams are assembled after player assessment. See the NESLL website for further details.
