Becky Curtis was born and raised in
DeWitt, IA, the daughter of an elementary
teacher and car salesman. Her mother
modeled to her that children who are the
least lovable need love the most! Her
father showed her that a parent can
support a child’s interest in music even if
they know nothing about it by buying them an instrument,
encouraging regular practice, listening to them, attending their
concerts, and treating them to ice cream after! Becky was a
normal youngster who almost didn’t start band because her best
friend didn’t. Then she wanted to quit three times when 1) her
lesson partners never practiced, 2) she had to take her big tenor
sax on the bus, and 3) she had to practice both her piano and sax
45 min. per day 6 days a week. But her parents and teachers
assured her that someday she would be glad she stuck with it.
THEY WERE SO RIGHT! Becky went on to be a three year All
State member, a member of the renowned Luther College Concert
Band (touring the US, Canada, and Europe with that group),
taught two years at Corwith-Wesley Schools, and 31 years at MidPrairie JH/MS. During her tenure at MP, Becky’s students earned
consistent I’s at solo/ensemble and large group contests and high
chairs in Conference, District, All State, and music camp bands.
Her Gifted Music Students wrote their own music and scripts for
musicals each spring. Becky was always glad to share her time
and enthusiasm by adjudicating contests and directing honor
bands.
Becky appreciates and cherishes the honors she has received as
a result of former students’ nominations – honorary degree from
Northwestern, State of Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award, CR
Gazette Teacher of the Week, Pepsi Cola Teacher of the State,
finalist for National Disney Arts Award, Walmart Teacher of the
Year twice, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers four times,
and Most Influential Teacher by numerous senior Youth Salute
and National Honor Society members. Her colleagues voted her
Mid-Prairie Teacher of the Year.
In retirement Becky is active in her church (choir, quilting, Bible
study, mentoring youth, various volunteer projects), gives a few
private piano/instrumental lessons, does a little subbing and
accompanying, tests beginners for West music, gardens, writes,
crafts, and reads.
But as fun and rewarding as her career and volunteering have
been, Becky’s family is and always has been #1 for her! Her dad,
Bud; mother-in-law, Margaret; devoted husband, Gary; daughters,
Tiffany and Larissa; their soul-mates, Neil and Erik; four sweet
granddaughters, Larissa, Beatrice, Aletta, and Grete; and another
precious little girl on the way!

Stephanie Nuss began teaching in the Linn-Mar
School District in 2007. Stephanie currently
conducts the 6th Grade Concert Band and the
7th Grade Jazz Band at Oak Ridge Middle
School. In addition to teaching lessons on all
instruments at Oak Ridge, Stephanie also
teaches fifth grade students at Linn Grove, Novak
Elementary, and Westfield Schools. In 2008 and 2010, the Oak
th
Ridge 6 Grade Concert Band was selected to perform at the
Iowa Bandmasters Association Conference in Des Moines.
Prior to teaching in the Linn-Mar District, Stephanie taught in the
Iowa City Community School District, teaching at both Northwest
Junior High in Coralville and North Central Junior High in North
Liberty, as well as numerous elementary schools. In addition to
her time with the Iowa City Schools, Stephanie spent two years as
the Director of 5-12 Bands in Olin.
A 2000 graduate of The University of Iowa, Stephanie also holds
the degree of Master of Music Education from VanderCook
College of Music in Chicago, Illinois. She runs a private clarinet
studio, and is an active adjudicator in the Marion and Cedar
Rapids Area. In 2010, Stephanie was the recipient of the Phillip
Sehmann Excellence in Teaching Award at the elementary level
from NEIBA. She resides in Marion with her husband, Aaron, and
is the proud mother of three children, Madeline (10), Dale (7) and
Charlie (1).
A native of North Carolina, Dr. Ronnie Wooten
received the Bachelor of Music Education
degree (cum laude) from East Carolina
University. He received the Master of Music and
the Doctor of Musical Arts Degrees, both in
conducting, from Michigan State University,
where he held a teaching assistantship and a
competitive doctoral fellowship in the School of
Music. He has pursued additional conducting studies at the
University of Calgary (Alberta, Canada), Campbell University, the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of
Michigan. His principal conducting teachers include: Eugene
Corporon, Kenneth Bloomquist, Herbert Carter and Robert Hause.
Currently Dr. Wooten is the conductor of the Northern Illinois
University Wind Ensemble, and teaches in both undergraduate
and graduate programs in music education. He also supervises
instrumental student teachers and teaches courses in instrumental
techniques and methods, wind instrument literature, and
conducting.
Dr. Wooten began his teaching career in the public schools of
North Carolina, where he was Assistant Band Director of the
three-time Bands of America Grand National Champion Rocky
Mount High School Band and as Director of Instrumental Music for
grades 8-12 in the Goldsboro City School District where his
ensembles received consecutive Superior, Division I and Excellent
Ratings in concert and marching venues throughout the
southeastern United States.
He maintains an active schedule as guest conductor, adjudicator,
lecturer, and consultant for instrumental music education across
the country, and has conducted honor bands and clinics
throughout the United States and Canada. He has been invited to
serve as guest conductor of the United States Army Field Band at
Ft. Meade, Maryland, the Kentucky Intercollegiate Band, and the
Provincial Honor Band of Alberta, Canada, and as orchestra
director for the international conference “A Multicultural
Celebration of Diversity in Music” in Flagstaff, Arizona.
He has presented research for the Midwest International Band and
Orchestra Clinic, College Band Directors National Association,
Illinois Music Educators Association, Kentucky Music Educators
Association, the Illinois Committee on Black Concerns in Higher
Education, the People of Color in Predominantly White Institutions
Conference and The National Association of Black Cultural
Centers. Dr. Wooten has also served as Music Execution Judge
and clinician for the Kiwanis International Music Festival in both
Toronto and Ottawa, Canada.
Dr. Wooten holds professional memberships in the Music
Educators National Conference, Illinois Music Educators
Association, Illinois Collegiate Band Director’s Association, MidAmerica Bandmasters Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi
Kappa Lambda, Kappa Kappa Psi, and the College Band
Directors National Association, where he serves as member of the
Committee on Ethnicity and Gender Issues.
Tom Garling is one of the most exciting jazz
trombonists anywhere. Starting in 1986, at the
age of twenty, he toured internationally with
Buddy Rich’s Big Band, and later toured with
Maynard Ferguson’s band from 1992-1998,
where he eventually became the Music Director.
Recently, he has been touring internationally with
Frank Sinatra Jr. and maintains a busy
performing schedule at premier jazz clubs and
large venues in Chicago and around the world. His cutting edge
playing and writing can be heard on numerous albums by
Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, and more recently the Chicago
Jazz Ensemble and the Chicago Yestet, to name a few. He has
been in high demand for over 25 years as a performer, composer,
arranger, director, recording artist, teacher and clinician.
