Requirements and Policies - Department of Engineering Education
College of Engineering Department of Engineering Education Enrollment Management 337 Goodwin Hall [email protected] http://www.enge.vt.edu/Undergraduate/changing_majors Change of Major Requirements and Policies Effective for May 2015 Change of Majors (following Spring 2015 courses) The College of Engineering offers the following undergraduate degree granting engineering majors: Aerospace Engineering (AE) Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) Chemical Engineering (CHE) Civil Engineering (CE) Computer Engineering (CPE) Computer Science (CS) Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) Electrical Engineering (EE) Engineering Science and Mechanics (ESM) Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Mechanical Engineering (ME) Mining Engineering (MINE) Ocean Engineering (OE) Change of Major Requirements *CHEM 1035: General Chemistry *CHEM 1045: General Chemistry Lab *ENGE 1215: Foundations of Engineering (C- or better) – previously ENGE 1024, see notes below *ENGL 1105: First-Year Writing *MATH 1225: Calculus – previously MATH 1205, see notes below ENGE 1216: Foundations of Engineering (C- or better) – previously ENGE 1114/ENGE 1104, see notes below ENGL 1106: First-Year Writing MATH 1226: Calculus – previously MATH 1206, see notes below PHYS 2305: Foundations of Physics Competitive overall Virginia Tech GPA (A minimum 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA will guarantee students their first choice major.) Notes: The Department of Engineering Education and the Department of Mathematics have made significant changes to their curriculums which impact the change of major requirements. 1. ENGE 1215 = ENGE 1024 and ENGE 1216 = ENGE 1104/ENGE 1114. Students will be able to take a combination of the sequences to fulfill the College of Engineering Change of Major Requirements through August 2016. 2. MATH 1225 = MATH 1205 and MATH 1226 = MATH 1206 + MATH 1224. Students will not be able to take a combination of the two sequences to fulfill the College of Engineering Change of Major Requirements. 3. MATH 1114 will no longer be a change of major requirement. * To declare General Engineering (for non-engineering students) students must complete the courses above denoted with an asterisk (*) and have a minimum 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA. Students should review the application policies (attached) and, once eligible to declare General Engineering or a degree granting engineering major, submit the electronic College of Engineering Change of Major Application which is available prior to the beginning of fall, spring, and summer at http://www.enge.vt.edu/Undergraduate/changing_majors. All required coursework must be completed (not currently enrolled) and displayed with a final grade on the Virginia Tech Unofficial transcript at the time of application. a. Students using transfer credit to meet any of the course requirements must have the transfer credit posted on the Virginia Tech Unofficial transcript at the time of application. b. There may be a delay of weeks/months from Registrar’s receipt of the official transcript from the transfer institution to having credit show on student’s transcript (viewed in Hokie Spa). Major changes will not be processed until all credits are officially awarded and showing on the Virginia Tech transcript, which may delay the student’s ability to submit a College of Engineering Change of Major Application. 2. Students admitted to Virginia Tech as a transfer student must have completed at least 12 hours of graded A-F coursework applicable to an engineering degree at Virginia Tech at the time of application. 3. Degree granting engineering majors accept applicants on a space-available basis. a. Applicants must have a minimum 2.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA at the time of application. b. Applicants with a minimum 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA at the time of application are guaranteed their first choice major. c. Applicants below a 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA at the time of application will be rank ordered according to GPA and placed in their first, second, or third choice based on space availability. 4. Students must be in a degree granting major for one semester prior to declaring a secondary engineering major. Enrolling in ENGE 1215 To enroll in ENGE 1215 at Virginia Tech students must be math ready, meet the computer requirement, and purchase the engineering software bundle. Fall Semesters: Available to first-semester General Engineering students and on a space available basis to nonengineering students with a minimum 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA. Spring Semesters and Summer I Sessions: Available to General Engineering students, regardless of GPA, and on a space available basis to non-engineering students with a minimum 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA. Summer II Sessions: Available to only Virginia Tech Summer Academy students admitted to the College of Engineering. Enrolling in ENGE 1216 To enroll in ENGE 1216 students must have earned a minimum grade of “C-” in ENGE 1215 or ENGE 1024. Fall, Spring, Summer I, Summer II Semesters: Available to General Engineering students, regardless of GPA, and on a space available basis to non-engineering students with a minimum 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA. Transferring Credit for ENGE Sequence (ENGE 1024, ENGE 1104, ENGE 1114, ENGE 1215, ENGE 1216) Transfer credit for the old ENGE course sequence (ENGE 1024, ENGE 1104, ENGE 1114) will be awarded for courses taken at other colleges/universities through summer II 2016. Transfer courses taken fall 2016 and beyond must be transferred in as ENGE 1215 and ENGE 1216 to receive applicable credit for engineering majors. Students wishing to transfer credit for any of the course requirements can find equivalent courses using the Virginia Community College Guide (for VCCS schools) and the Transfer Equivalency Database (for non-VCCS schools). Prior approval must be obtained from the College of Engineering Academic Affairs Office. Students using transfer credit to meet any of the course requirements must have the transfer credit posted on their Virginia Tech Unofficial Transcript at the time of application. NOTE: The University requires that a student earn a minimum grade of “C” for any course being transferred.
