OLD TESTAMENT LESSON
Jonah 3:1–5, 10
The book of Jonah is a comedy starring a reluctant prophet who is given
a one-sentence message: Nineveh will be destroyed in forty days. Much
to Jonah's dismay, the people of Nineveh repent. The point of the story is
to get the reader to wrestle with the question "On whom should God
have mercy?"
The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2Get up, go
to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.

So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the
LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days' walk
across. 4Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's walk. And he cried
out, "Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!" 5And the
people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone,
great and small, put on sackcloth. 10When God saw what they did, how
they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the
calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

Before Jesus calls his first disciples, he proclaims a message that
becomes known as "the gospel" or good news from God. God is ready to
rule our lives. Those who realize this will respond with repentance and
faith.

good news of God, 15and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom
of God has come near, repent, and believe in the good news." 16As

P: Called to know, love, and follow you, O God, we pray for the church,
the world, and all in need.

A: Lord God, call your whole church beyond small hopes and
halfhearted witness. Stir your people to risk everything for the sake
of your plan of salvation among us.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
A: Call our hearts to greater love for your creation, that we see its

come.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
GOOD MORNING! We are happy you have joined us today to praise,
listen and be fed by Almighty God. Whoever you are and wherever you
are on your journey of faith, you are welcome here! Holy Communion is
celebrated at each worship service and we invite all believers to receive
the sacrament with us. Children who commune at their home church are
also welcome here; if your child does not commune please bring him/her

THE GIVING JUG RECIPIENT for 1st quarter of 2015 (Jan., Feb.,
March) recipient will be ARC of Marshall County. The ARC of Marshall
County is a group of volunteers that provide programs and services for
individuals of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The volunteers are an informational resource and sponsor day camps,
summer camps, and weekly recreational programs for adults through out
the year. Service and Mission Committee.
SUNDAY FLOWERS - please sign up to provide flowers for worship in
memory or honor of loved ones or a friend. The beauty of flowers
testifies to God’s presence and love.
CARING CENTER 110 W. Main. We are in need of men’s clothes,
sweatshirts, jackets, winter coats, shoes and boots. We need children’s
winter clothes, boots, shoes and coats. For the women, we are in need
of winter clothes, coats, shoes and boots. We always take household
items, silverware, dishes, bedding, towels, lamps—all working and clean.
Our items are for those in need, they can come once a month, with limits
to be taken. All are free or free will offering to help pay our rent, lights
and insurance. Donna, Bonnie and I (Karen), volunteer from OSLC.

HOUSE OF COMPASSION WINTER SOUP BOWL LUNCHEON.
KC Hall, January 18th, 11 am – 1 pm, $5 children 5 and under, $10
adults. Enjoy homemade soups in specially crafted bowls to support our
services. A portion of the proceeds go to MHS.
THE ANNUAL LOVE BANQUET will be Saturday, February 14 at 6 pm
in the church fellowship hall. The evening will begin with wine and
cheese followed by a catered meal by Haley’s featuring roast pork
loin. Entertainment for the evening will feature music and ames. Singles
and couples are encouraged to come and join the fun! A free will
offering will be taken with the suggested amount (to cover out-of-pocket
expenses) of $12.50 per person.
FUN NIGHT OUT! TRIVIA NIGHT is back on Sat. Feb. 7th at the
Knights of Columbus Hall in Marshalltown. Doors open at 6 p.m. and
questions begin at 7:00 p.m. Come for the friendly competition and an
adults only night out! Bring your own snacks for your table, beverages
available for purchase at the hall. Cost is $10 a player with an 8 player
