We promise to bring Ephesus alive. In the remains of the monumental
fountains, you will “see” water drops dripping off the marble bodies of
Ephesian females dressed in their “wet T-shirts”. In the marble paved streets,
you will “hear” the sound of the horses hauling chariots. You will “smell” the
grilled fish and the fried poultry on the wall paintings of the kitchens in the
houses of the Ephesians. Sitting in the grand theater of Ephesus, you will “feel”
the anger of the Ephesians who were rioting against St. Paul. Ephesus will not
be another ancient city. Walking in the streets of Ephesus, it will not take too
much of an effort to think of yourself as one of quarter of a million people who
lived in this city for nine hundred years.
Ephesians were real people who
misspelled words, who carved graffiti
on their walls. Ephesians were poets.
Ephesians got sick and they had doctors
to cure them. The Deities of Ephesus
could not save the city from being
destroyed in the earthquakes. Malaria
threatened the city; the Ephesians
thought it was the curse of the evil
spirits.

The Turkish people call Izmir “the
pearl necklace of the Aegean”.
The city is built on various levels of
terraces around the coziest harbor of
the Aegean. After you visit the
Archaeology Museum and the old
city, you will have a chance to sip
your coffee at the terrace of one of the land marks of the city: at
the Elevator. In the early nineteen hundreds, to make it easy for
the old ladies living at the higher level of the city to visit their
neighbors at the sea level, a rich man had built an elevator to
connect the sea level to the neighborhood on the hill side.
