Service in the United Methodist Connection
Since 2012, Pastor Amy has had the privilege of serving on the EPA Conference Board of Ordained Ministry. Comprised of approximately 50 people, the Board meets monthly for the purpose of 1) interviewing and credentialing licensed and ordained clergy, 2) overseeing the theological education of candidates and provide mentoring opportunities, 3) managing changes in
conference relationships, and 4) assisting in the retooling and continuing education of our
clergy and specialized ministers. Please join Pastor Amy in praying for the leadership in our Annual
Conference. The next meeting of the Board of Ordained Ministry is February 5 through 7.
Inter-Generational Retreat Because of receipts from Soup Lunches and a very generous donation
from Hopewell, we will once again be able to offer a 50% discount off of the Black Rock fee. Please stop
by the IGR sign up table in the FLC to get details on attending the retreat scheduled for February 13 - 15.
IGR Details: Amy Banka will be the adult leader with a theme of Faithbooking: Remembering Your
Story, based on Deuteronomy 4:9. Across the generations, we will explore the ways in which our faith
stories connect with each other and with God's story as revealed in scripture. Join us as we remember and
celebrate deeper memories of God's presence throughout our lives.
Weekend Rates – NOTE – Discount of 50% has been taken off of the Black
Rock fee. Rate includes 5 meals, and 2 nights stay at the Maranatha Lodge;

Please call Sandy and Bill Bradley at 484-467-1675 with any questions.

Boy Scout Sunday The young men of Hopewell’s Troop 8 will offer their
annual Boy Scout Sunday on February 8th. This is a great service to our congregation, an excellent chance at “public speaking” opportunities for some of the
boys, and a helpful update on the good work of the Scouts over recent months.
We look forward to this great annual event at the 9:30 AM worship hour in the
Sanctuary on Sunday, February 8th.
South Africa News A few weeks ago you may have heard Jordan Ridge announce that Mosaic is expanding to Cape Town. Since Hopewell was the group
that built the first building in the Potchefstroom/Ikageng area, Meyer Conradie,
CEO of Mosaic, asked if we would help construct the first building in Cape
Town. We gladly accepted! We are targeting a trip in mid-August and are beginning plans now. If you have felt that nudge to go to South Africa or would like to
return and help start the next phase in Mosaic’s development, then contact Tony Brantzeg at
[email protected] or call him at 610-942-0658. He will have an informational meeting on
Sunday, February 8th at noon in Room Adam. Feel free to stop by and learn more about the trip.
United Methodist Women’s News We will be collecting new clothing for our
Spring Ingathering on April 18th. We need new clothing for women, men,
children and babies. Please put any clothing in our UMW box at the Donation
Station!
Dear Hopewell United Methodist Church,
Thank you for the generous donation you made to Christian Life Prison and Recovery Ministries Inc.
(CLPRM) and the Conquering Grounds Music Fest 2014 in the amount of $300.00. With your help
CLPRM will be able to make an immediate impact in the lives that we’ve touched through this community outreach. May God continue to richly bless you for your support of this ministry.
Sincerely,
Bob Sofronski, Director

Bower Chapel Renovation Project
Bower Chapel News
Renovation of the Bower Chapel began
with the removal of the pipe organ for rebuilding.
The refurbished instrument will include a handsome façade and an additional solo stop.
The work in the Bower Chapel continues on pace.
The chancel fixtures have been removed and the
former choir lofts have been leveled. The flooring
and electrical work will begin next week. Meanwhile, in Stowe PA, new windchests and toe
boards (the racks on which the pipes sit) are being
manufactured. In a week or so, Patrick J. Murphy
and Associates will start to erect the organ in their
shop for testing. At the same time they will be
doing the woodwork for the organ facade. If you
are interested in sponsoring some of the pipework
for this project, please contact the church office.

compelling stories, and a surprising Jesus based approach to reversing the
“stay away” trend. This event will be at New Hanover UMC in Gilbertsville, just 45 minutes from
Hopewell. For more information, contact Deb Boyd at [email protected].

connected to a ministry or mission team, or to respond to God’s call to start a new
ministry, contact Deb Boyd ([email protected]). In service, we find
meaning, purpose and joy!

Man to Man Ministries is pleased to announce a roundtable discussion:
FAITH ON THE FIELD;
How Christian Athletes are viewed in the professional arena.
Hopewell member and Vice President / Executive Producer at MLB.com Jim Jenks will moderate this
program, talking about Christianity in sports. Jim was previously the Executive Sports Editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer, and earlier in his career he was the Director of Research at ESPN. He is a wealth of
knowledge, and should provide some interesting insights to this discussion.
Pastor Ted Winsley has served as chaplain of the Philadelphia Eagles since 2001, providing weekly Bible
studies, counseling, and personal mentoring to many of the players. He is a passionate preacher with Living Faith Christian Center in Pennsauken, N.J., born and educated in Delaware, he resides in South Jersey
with his college sweetheart, Minister Dawn Winsley, and two children, Tierra and Theodore II.
John Quinn has been executive sports editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer since 2010 and managing sports
sections for more than 30 years in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. A good Catholic, John's family has had its faith tested by three generations of Notre Dame football. Born and educated
in New York, he resides in South Jersey with his wife, Amy, and son, Jack.
Please consider inviting a friend to join us and be sure to register at www.hopewellumc.org/mensbreakfast-signup.

Cemetery Clean-up Scheduled
In our ongoing effort to keep our cemetery clean and beautiful, all seasonal/holiday
decorations that are not removed by Sunday, February 9th, 2015 will be removed and
discarded. The actual clean-up date will be weather permitting, of course. Any questions please contact Dennis Luminella, 610-269-5569 or Sheri Kentner in the church
office, 610-269-1545.
Staff Evaluations Each of the fulltime Program staff at Hopewell UMC is involved in the annual
evaluation process right now. Employees solicited input from four-to-five reviewers from the congregation, plus the Senior Pastor or their immediate supervisor. If the evaluation form was forwarded to you on
behalf of a particular staff member, Thank You for this valuable feedback. At Hopewell UMC, we strive
for excellence and this regular “performance review” is an important part of that process. There are
twenty-two (22) full or part time members of the Hopewell staff (non-school). As yet another measure of
good administration, our financial leadership always attempts to keep the “staff compensation” portion of
our annual budget within a range of 50-55% of total expenses. We are pleased to report that for the year
2014, our expenditure for staff compensation was once again within that range (actual: 51.7%). Praise
God for the exceptional staff leadership we enjoy at Hopewell UMC.

February Designated Giving This year’s IGR is just around the corner. Each February, folks
from Hopewell UMC enjoy a weekend retreat together at Black Rock Center in Lancaster County. This
intergenerational retreat is always a highlight in our year, and participants receive a significant discount
on their registration costs because of fundraisers throughout the year and Designated Giving. As had been
our tradition, February Designated dollars will allow some new faces at Hopewell to share in the 2016
Intergenerational Retreat.
January Designated Giving The work at Camp Corson in Puerto Rico. Received: $2,834.00.
Thank you! Pray for our Hopewell UMC short term mission folks, Paul and Melanie Zmich as they
