Martha, Martha I love the story of Mary and Martha
THE FAMILY LIFELINE Feb ru a r y 1 , 2 0 1 5 Martha, Martha I love the story of Mary and Martha that we find in the scriptures. I think that this story is such a parallel to many of our lives today. Let us look at the passage from Luke 10:38-42 (NKJV) 38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” 41 And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Verse 40 says…Martha was distracted… Isn’t that like many of us today, so distracted by the task at hand or the world around us that we forget what is really important. Jesus said to her in verse 41… Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things… Sounds familiar doesn’t it! Jesus also says in verse 42 “But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part.” Mary had chosen to sit at Jesus’ feet and hear His teaching, the good part. Now, what about you and me? Would we be a Mary or a Martha? Think about it! The title of this article is a question of no little importance. And when we reflect upon Jesus’ own words that “many” will choose to walk the way of eternal destruction and that “few” will ultimately make it to the gates of Heaven (cf. Matthew 7:1314), this question becomes even richer in significance. While our busy schedules might often prevent us from doing so, we should actually reflect upon His return every day! Could it be that the Lord has chosen tomorrow as the day of His return? If that be the case, in what condition will you find yourself to be in the day after tomorrow? Only the wise will bother to seriously ponder this thought...to be continued (from the Bulletin Digest) There is a box in the back corner of the auditorium for used eyeglasses, we will ship them to Romania later in the spring. Sevier County church of Christ history, continued The church used the writer in meetings for five years beginning in 1940. The first meeting resulted in sixteen baptisms and two restorations. (As a side note the writer indicated, “This was his first meeting conducted when he was twenty years old. He feels that its success was not indicative of great ability, but the reaping as a result of being at the right place in a favorable time.) Most of those baptized were from the Baptist church. The Cross Trails congregation of the denomination had failed and most of the members had been or were converted. The meeting opened on Sunday with eighteen members present; it closed with 36. One meeting was held each year through 1944 with the exception of 1942 when two meetings were conducted. Probably fifty responded during these years of whom possibly forty were baptized. The membership at present is about forty. In 1944, during the annual meeting much preliminary work was done and the stage was set for a mission meeting in DeQueen. Smyrna church and elders encouraged the effort and were instrumental in having the plans carried out. This fact, along with more available material, accounts for the greater length of the Smyrna history. Since 1944, meetings have been conducted at Smyrna by the following men: 1945 and 1946, Oscar Smith, Jr., Texarkana; 1947 and 1948 by H. H. Dunn: and by A. D. Neal of Wichita Falls, Texas in 1949.25 (A. D. Neal is a graduate of East Texas Teachers College, Commerce. He holds an M. A. degree and is teaching in Senior High School in Wichita Falls.) LAKE After beginning in 1916, the church of Christ in Lake community met in private homes for five years. A community building was erected in 1922, and the church has met in it since that date. The Mathews family and the McRae families, principally, are those that made the beginning. These same ones have, for the most part, led the way through the years. Coleman Mathews, now of Los Angeles, California, lived in the community in the early days of the church there. He preached for the congregation during that time. Other preachers to have labored with the church are a Brother Holland—his name appears in the Smyrna record book—the late J. D. Tant, Grady Reese, now of Vernon, Texas and a Brother Parks. Meeting have been conducted by P. P. Alexander and I. M. Lambert; 26(Alexander and Lambert preached in De Queen for the Christian Church. (Disciples of Christ) by Coleman Mathews and Elmer L’Roy. The attendance at present is from 20 to 25 each week. At nearby Chapel Hill the father of John Kays, now of Tioga, Texas, preached before 1900. The Kays lived in Smyrna. Nothing, so far as is known, came of his work there.27 (McRae, Mr. and Mrs. E. J., Interview, 10.9.1949.) BEN LOMOND The church of Christ was first built at Ben Lomond in 1902. This small town in southeastern Sevier County is only a few miles eastward from Paraclifta, an early settlement in this section. The congregation began worshipping regularly in 1914. The Elders were D. M. Watson and C. Watson. B. W. Fawcett and J. C. Fawcett were Deacons. Mrs. Leila Rhyne was serving as treasurer, and is still working in that capacity at this writing. There were 32 members. January 10, 1932 the officers were: N. J. Reese, minister; B. W. Fawcett and W. J. Wade, Elders; T. F. Rhyne a deacon, and of course, Mrs. Rhyne as treasurer. There were nineteen members at that date. The church building burned October 15, 1939. It was rebuilt and used the first time April 14, 1940. The building is of frame construction consisting of an auditorium with no classrooms. It is in a good state of repair and nicely painted white. There are 20 to 25 members in Ben Lomond now. Preachers who have worked for the congregation are as follows: a Brother Stell, N. J. Reese, Ross, Croom, R. L. Colley, H. H. Dunn, Elmer L’Roy, and F. G. Copeland. Most of these were associated with the church in meetings. C. Cecil Bishop of DeQueen preached once each month in Ben Lomond during the three year period from 1947 through 1949. 28 (Rhyne, Mrs. Leila, From information furnished 1.1.1949.) ...to be continued 1305 W.
