While in school, Brett played baseball, football and basketball. He also became an accomplished swimmer. In junior high, he became a member of the wrestling team. In high school, he wrestled on the varsity team. In 1988, Brett took 4th place in the nation for wrestling in the Amateur Athletic Union. Afterwards, he was made one of the high school varsity team captains. After graduating, he earned a green belt in the martial arts. Brett is also a nationally recognized artist. Brett began speaking professionally in 1990. He has done over 3,000 presentations worldwide to over 1 million people. Brett and his wife, Chrisa, have owned and operated their own company, called No Boundaries Inc., since the year 2000. Brett is also a standup comedian and has appeared on the Bob and Tom show He is currently working full-time as a motivational and inspirational speaker. He is also a substitute teacher in his hometown area. Brett has no arms and no legs, but more importantly, he has No Handicaps!! Breakout Session Descriptions: Participants will be able to attend 3 sessions. THURSDAY, February 12, 2015 A. A SUSTAINABLE SYSTEM OF STAFF DEVELOPMENT FOR SERVING STUDENTS WITH ASD: HOW TO GET THERE AND STAY THERE This session will describe an innovative model of staff development which has been effective in moving evidence-based practices into the classroom. Long-term sustainability of evidence-based practices and a cohesive system of supports will be described Presented by: Jenny Snyder, Special Education Manager, East Allen Schools: Lindsey Lortie, Special Education Supervisor; and Jesse Arrick, STAR consultant B. UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING Participants will have the opportunity to gather background knowledge of Universal Design for Learning's principles and guidelines, as well as learn about BCSC's journey of the UDL implementation process for their district. Presented by: Jessica Vogel, Assistant Director of Special Education and Tina Greene, UDL Coordinator - Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) C. STATEWIDE TESTING FOR 2014-2015 This presentation will cover information about Indiana Statewide Testing for the 2014-15 school year (ISTEP+, NCSC, ECA and IREAD-3). We will cover updates and accommodations allowed on statewide testing. Presented by: Karen Stein and Kristan Sievers-Coffer, Indiana Department of Education D. TOP 10 LEGAL ISSUES FOR 2014 Presented by Andrew Manna & Seamus Boyce, Church, Church, Hittle & Antrim E. INDIANA IEP UPDATE Presented by: Jolly Piersall, Matt Johnson and Alisa Stovall of the Indiana IEP Resource Center. F. VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION A comprehensive overview of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) system and outline the recent strategic plan that focuses on transition-aged youth with disabilities. The importance of key partnerships and the organization’s vision for purposeful collaboration will be further explained. And finally, a discussion of what this focus on transition-age youth means for those professionals and special educators who support them. Presented by Kylee Hope, BRS Director G. MODELS FOR COLLABORATION BETWEEN SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND ABA PROVIDERS In this session, two different models for collaboration between Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) providers and school districts will be discussed, including key factors in achieving successful collaboration and programming. Time will be provided for audience members to share their stories of collaboration, including what did and did not work. The goal is to provide examples that can be replicated in school districts across Indiana, and to facilitate positive outcomes for all involved. An update on activities of the ABA task force will be provided also. DEPARTMENT OF CHILD SERVICES Providing insight into the regulations and policies that must be followed by DCS and how these relate to the child we serve together. The session is designed to be interactive and participants are encouraged to bring questions and concerns as well as offering their thoughts on how DCS can better serve children with special needs. Presented by Jeff Neumann, Education Liaison, Indiana Department of Child Services J. THE CENTER FOR DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING EDUCATION: WHAT’S NEW IN YEAR TWO Center updates will be shared including roles of the Assessment Team and School-age services. Detailed discussion about the CDHHE’s Strategic Plan by the presenters and engagement of audience members related to how we can all work together to realize the outcomes of this plan will occur.
