Ukrainian National Women’s League of
America will tell you about a history with
Russia that’s scarcely taught in school — a
history involving a politically-induced famine
and an insatiable blood lust for power.

Library’s Nick Linn Lecture Series offers authors and a bite to eat

The Nick Linn Lecture Series,
presented by the Friends of the Library of Collier County, returned for
2015 featuring an accomplished array of authors and lunch at the RitzCarlton Golf Resort.
The popular lecture series — the
first event, which featured Greg Iles
on Monday, was sold out — has become a fixture on the Naples literary
scene, since it was launched 12 years
ago by Linn, longtime board member
and former president of the Friends
of the Library. In all, the series brings
in four best-selling authors, with
Joseph Finder on March 2, Lisa Gardner on March 9 and Sandra Brown on
March 23 following Iles’ talk.
The Nick Linn series has a history of
bringing top authors to
Naples. Featured writers appearing in past
years have included
Tami Hoag, Nicholas
Sparks, James Grippando, James PatterSandra
son, Dennis Lehane,
Brown
Harlan Coben, Linda
Fairstein and Sara Paretsky.
The lecture series has a new
policy, and individual tickets can
be purchased. So fans of the authors scheduled for March still can
purchase tickets.

Golf tips offered for seniors looking to improve their game

Senior golfers, who already
recognize the physical and mental benefits of regular play, might
not relish the changes in their
body they encounter as they age.
With advancing age comes more
knowledge and understanding of
golf, but less physical strength
and endurance.
Stan Geer, head golf professional at Vi at Bentley Village in
North Naples, encounters frustrations from aging players and
realizes adjustments are necessary for continued game enjoyment and achievement.
“As players age and lose some
of their power and flexibility, it
is important to make modifications, focusing on strengths and
mitigating weaknesses. This often means players need to shift
their emphasis from hitting the
long shots down the fairway to
improving their short game, honing chip shot skills,” Geer said.
Because strength and flexibility often deteriorate with age, a
solid warmup routine is critical
to preserving physical ability
and preventing injuries on the
golf course.
Whether from old sports injuries or arthritis, there are some
common problem areas for seniors, such as ankles, hips, necks
and shoulders.
“Maintaining muscle strength
helps players achieve proper
posture, stance and balance,
increasing their endurance on
the course and reducing aches
and pains off the course,” Geer
said. “I recommend 10 minutes
of practice swings and stretching
exercises pregame.”
Because the mechanics of a senior player’s game has changed,
it is important to re-examine
golf equipment and accessories.

Vice President Larissa Wychrij hopes
the chapter will bring awareness to the
Ukrainian culture and help educate the
community.
Santarsiero agrees. As Naples becomes
more populated, she hopes a growing
number of Floridians will become exposed to what they sometimes refer to as
Ukie culture.
“Those areas have always been ethnic
in nature, so people have been exposed to
that,” she said, referring to the Midwest.
“But here in Florida, it’s a different situation. You’ve never had that diversity of
ethnic groups.”
Named after “ukraina,” an old Eastern Slavic word meaning “borderlands,”
“land” or “country,” Ukraine is sandwiched between Russia and the Republic of Moldova. Belarus is its northern
neighbor and the Black Sea and Russia
are below it to the South.
“Ukraine is the crown jewel of Europe,”
Santarsiero said. “The bread basket.”
It is known for its fertile farmland —
but more recently, for its civic unrest.

to the European Union and the resignation of former Ukrainian President Viktor
Yanukovych began in late 2013. This led
to widespread civil unrest and ultimately,
a revolution in 2014.
In 2014, unmarked Russian soldiers
also took control of the Ukrainian territory of Crimea, which Russia promptly
annexed, against the wishes of the U.S.
and other European nations.
On Jan. 4, a powerful explosion shook
the heart of Odessa, Ukraine’s most elegant city. The bomb went off at the local Euro-Maidan Coordination Council,
where volunteers stored humanitarian aid
for Ukrainian soldiers fighting Russianbacked forces in the eastern part of the
country.
According to the Daily Beast (thebea.st/
1DkIsnm), this has been considered an
act of terrorism. Members of the group
believe Russian President Vladimir Putin
is trying to restore the country back to the
former USSR.
“He’s stirred them up and caused this
whole uprising,” Wychrij said. “He wants
to be the dictator back like it was when
Stalin was there.”
But despite interference from the Russians, the Ukie culture has survived.

32,000 BC. It officially declared independence in 1991; however, many still refer to
it as “the Ukraine” because at one point it
broke off into three different entities, including the Ukrainian People’s Republic.

“Ukraine has a resilient history,
marked with bloodshed, tragedy and a
fierce amount of loyalty,” Santarsiero said.
And she didn’t say it lightly.
In 1932-33, 4 million to 5 million Ukrainians — mostly peasants — starved to
death during a politically induced famine, called Holodomor, imposed by Soviet
leader Joseph Stalin.
The Soviets also tried to “rusticate”
the Ukrainian people by rigidly imposing their culture, values and way of life.
“Our parents’ generation, they didn’t
have any youth,” Santarsiero explained.
They were sent to displaced person’s
camps — or took matters into their own
hands and fled the country.
“Their kids were taught to be very patriotic. It was instilled in us. They get a
feather in their cap for keeping it going.”

to Ukrainian school on Saturday. Here,
they learned their language, culture and
identity.
Santarsiero is glad her heritage has
survived, but also hopes history never
repeats itself.
“Ukraine declared independence in
1991. This was something our parents
and forefathers spoke of forever,” Santarsiero said. “Now we’re going back to the
same old-same old. We don’t want to see
Ukraine fall under Russian rule again.”

Members can send money individually,
but a chapter cannot send funds on its
own, according to Wychrij.
Since March, Santarsiero said the chapter has raised $12,000. She’s expecting it
to climb to $22,000.
The Ukies meet each month on a
Wednesday. Members borrow each
other’s homes or community clubhouses
because Naples doesn’t have a traditional
Ukrainian church, where Santarsiero said
they would normally meet.
She wants to exhibit Ukrainian Easter
eggs (Pysankys), artwork and embroidery
at local schools and libraries. But nothing
is locked in yet.
But Santarsiero said they will participate in Hodges University’s Diversity
and Inclusion Festival in 2016. Expect the
Ukrainian Dancers of Miami, artwork,
embroidery and folk dances.
As much as she loves celebrating
Ukrainian culture, Santarsiero said it’s
hard not to talk about Russia when they
get together.
“Our goal is that we are actually probably helping those people who are falling
through the cracks,” she said. “Through
the UNWLA war victims’ fund, we’re
mainly helping widows, orphans and
some maimed soldiers.”

Finally, Geer said older golfers shouldn’t be afraid to change
their grips to a larger size. Superior grips help increase a player’s
strength and power, allowing
them to grip the club better.
Geer said practice is still the
key to achieving and maintaining a lower score.
“I recommend that people
spend the bulk of their practice
sessions making 3 to 4 foot putts.
Even a 50 percent conversion of
those putts results in a significant decrease in overall score.
After all, the end goal is to get
the ball into the hole in as few
strokes as possible.”
