Congratulations to our eight students who took their IGCSE Bahasa
Indonesia exams in November. All students achieved A* - C grades
with four of the eight students achieving A* grades. Congratulations also to Erik in Year 11 who received an A* grade for his Information and Communication Technology exam, which he sat for six
months early! An absolutely wonderful achievement by all and
such a great way to start off the New Year!

From the Head of Primary
Dear Parents,
We are looking forward to another exciting, busy term in the Primary school with swimming galas, Student
Led Conferences, Mother Tongue Day celebrations and the Year 6 Showcase. Information regarding each of
these events will be sent out at a later date.
Student Led Conferences are an important part of our reporting system in the Primary school. Students and
teachers are starting to prepare for this day, where your child will be given an opportunity to explain his or
her learning to you. Although a schedule of times will be sent out nearer the time, please mark this day in
your calendar, as there will not be regular classes for Primary students on Friday, February 27 th. You
will be invited to attend school at a particular time with your child or children. The conferences will last
approximately 45 minutes.
Although it seems like a long time away, we are now taking enrollments for our Preschool class starting in
August, 2015. Children in this class must be 3 years old on August 31st, 2015 and the maximum number of
students is twenty. If you would like to enrol your child in this class, please contact Mira in the main office
for an application for admission. To make it simple for you, we are able to add the application fee of
US$100 to the school fee invoice for Term 4 this year if you would like.

The Benefit of Learning How to Study
Seeing the looks of horror on the faces of our Year 11 students this week as they face the “mock exams”
certainly takes me back a few years. When I was in Year 7 my family moved from the US to Canada which
has a completely different education system. Let’s just put it this way: school in Canada was WAY more
difficult than what I had been accustomed to. I was at a complete loss until my step dad (who grew up
with this rigorous educational system) stepped in and taught me some very valuable lessons.

He taught me how to take notes. There are many different styles of note taking but one which
has been very beneficial for students is called “Cornell Notes.” Taking notes in class is very
helpful for recalling information and also to assist students with meaning and clarity. http://

Another important lesson- organising my notes and learning how to study effectively. There
are key elements that a student must study and learn for an exam. Therefore, learning to

Pace yourself. Don’t begin studying for a big exam the day before. You should be preparing
weeks or, at the very least, several days ahead of time.
Create flash cards.
Ask for help if you don’t understand concepts.

Study in a comfortable, quiet place with as few distractions as possible.


Dear parents, the earlier we are able to teach these concepts to our children the better. You can begin to
work with your child now, utilising these skills-preparing them well ahead of time for exams at the end of
the semester. Additionally, for those parents of Year 11 students; the “real” Cambridge Examinations are
just around the corner; assisting your child to study in an effective manner could very well be the tool
which catapults them to success! Most of our students are just at the beginning of their academic career;
if they are able to acquire good foundational study skills at an early age, testing or examinations of any
kind won’t be nearly such a daunting task.

Gotong Royong
A really exciting term lies ahead for the Gotong Royong program at CCS. Yesterday, the first sessions were held with
three new groups emerging.
The STEM group, which was formed as an afternoon club, is
now part of Gotong Royong. These young scientists are planning some initiatives that will see them work on the school's
overall power sustainability and minimization of power wastage.
The CCS Batu Belig River Rats are launching a plan to create awareness and action in regards to our local
Batu Belig River. They will be working with the community and other community groups, Bye Bye Plastics
and Keep Bali Clean to increase awareness and fund regular clean ups in the river - look out for an invitation to be part of the solution when they hold their Bikini Sale later this month.
And a very much student led initiative has created a new music group. Emerging like a phoenix from the
now disbanded Skate to Educate Group, these young students have formed a group that will build the
school's musical talents, increase performance opportunities and learn and teach skills associated with
music and music video production. This group is being led by Victoria Kosasie from Year 10, with support
from the Music Department, and will grow to become an important part of nurturing musical talent at
CCS.
All the groups and their activities, as well as the program outlines, are displayed on the CCS Gotong
Royong site that is accessible through the Internet.
