St Scholastica, Abbess
480-543
Feast Day: February 10
Patroness of Nuns
St. Valentine, Priest and Martyr
Died 207 AD
Feast Day: February 14
Patron of Greetings
St Scholastica, sister of St Benedict, consecrated her
life to God from her earliest youth. After her brother went to
Monte Cassino, where he established his famous monastery,
she took up her abode in the neighborhood at Plombariola,
where she founded and governed a monastery for nuns, about
five miles from that of St Benedict, who, it appears, also directed his sister and her nuns. She visited her brother once a
year, and as she was not allowed to enter his monastery, he
went in company with some of his brethren to meet her at a
house some distance away. These visits were spent in conferring together on spiritual matters.
St. Valentine, a Roman priest, together with St. Marius
and his family, assisted the martyrs who suffered during the
reign of Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. Being
apprehended, he was sent to the Prefect of Rome, who
commanded that he be beaten with clubs and afterward beheaded. He suffered martyrdom about the year 270.
The custom of sending valentines on this day is the revival
of an ancient pagan practice, which consisted in boys drawing
the names of girls in honor of their goddess, Februata Juno, on
February 15. To abolish this practice names of saints were
substituted on billets drawn upon this day.
On one occasion they had passed the time as usual in
prayer and pious conversation and in the evening they sat down
to take their reflection. St Scholastica begged her brother to
remain until the next day. St Benedict refused to spend the
night outside his monastery. She had recourse to prayer and a
furious thunderstorm burst upon them so that neither St Benedict nor any of his companions could return home. They spent
the night in spiritual conferences. The next morning they
parted to meet no more on Earth.
From Lives of the Saints, Catholic Book Publishing Co., New York, pgs. 71-72.
Quiet Time with God
Hush, my dear child, and listen to My voice.
I will speak of a love that will make
you rejoice.
The love I offer man cannot comprehend.
Nor gifts of the Father that He
deems to send.
Rise above the bustle of your busy daily life,
and give Me your sorrows, troubles, pains
and strifes.
Grant Me some quiet time and speak to Me
when you pray,
then together we will remain together
throughout your busy day.
Three days later, St Scholastica died, and her holy
brother beheld her vision as it ascended into Heaven. He sent
his brethren to bring her body to his monastery and laid it in
the tomb he had prepared for himself. She died about the year
543 and St Benedict followed her soon after.
From Lives of the Saints, Catholic Book Publishing Co., New York, pgs. 69-67
Our Lady of Lourdes
Feast Day: February 11
The first of the eighteen apparitions of the Blessed Virgin
Mary to the humble Bernadette took place at Lourdes on February 11, 1858. On March 25, when Bernadette asked the
Beautiful Lady her name, she replied: “I am the Immaculate
Conception.”
Shirley Hile Powell
The devotion of people in all parts of the world to Our
Lady of Lourdes, together with the countless miracles that
have been wrought through her intercession, has caused one of
the most marvelous regenerations in the History of the Church.
