Making Him Known - Redeemer Lutheran Church
Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 Redeemer Lutheran The Fifth Sunday Church “Making Him Known” After The Epiphany But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 Saturday, February 7, 2015 – 5:30 pm Sunday, February 8, 2015 – 8:00 am Our Mission Statement: “As Christians based on the solid foundation of God’s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ – welcoming all into our family of believers.” Our Theme: Each month this year we are considering how different Biblical characters made our Lord known in unique ways. In February, we remember Paul, who “Made Him Known” to the nations. WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our “Welcome Center” in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer. OUR THEME FOR TODAY is “To Win As Many As Possible.” Paul was a man with a mission – to win as many as possible for Christ. While he would never compromise the Gospel, he was willing to be flexible when it came to customs and traditions. We Come Into God’s Presence (*) Those who are able are asked to stand during these parts of the Service. WELCOME and GREETINGS (We welcome our fellow worshipers.) HYMN “Hail To The Lord’s Anointed” ................................................................ LSB 398 -1- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 (*) OPENING SENTENCES (Please stand.) P: "I was glad when they said to me, let us go into the house of the Lord." C: Calm me down, Lord. Quiet the churning that's going on inside of me--all the hurry and hustle of everyday living. I know I need the rest of Your presence in my life. I am glad to be here. P: "Oh, come, let us sing to the Lord, let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving." C: I am thankful, Lord, but this week has been so hectic--work, home, church activities. Still, I have much for which to praise you. P: "Oh, come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand." C: It is good to pause and to be refreshed in the house of God. Lord, we are ready to listen to You and to be strengthened by Your Word and the care of our fellow Christians. All: "Let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise." All sing: This is the day, this is the day That the Lord has made, that the Lord has made. We will rejoice, we will rejoice And be glad in it, and be glad in it. This is the day that the Lord has made, We will rejoice and be glad in it! This is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made. (*) CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: As we come into the presence of our God, we hear the invitation of Jesus, "Come unto me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." C: Lord Jesus, I come to You today burdened not only with the cares and troubles of this life, but also with my sins--my sins in thought, word, and deed, against You, and against those with whom I live, work, attend church, and associate each day. Lord, I accept Your invitation, and I lay my burden, all of it, on You, because I believe that You carried my sins to the cross with You. Forgive me, renew me, and grant me Your promised rest for my soul. Amen. (a time of silent reflection) P: C: God’s Word says, "Jesus Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed." As a called and ordained servant of the Word, I say to you, "Go in peace, your sins are forgiven, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Amen. -2- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 (*) HYMN OF PRAISE Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice! Oh, come to the Father through Jesus the Son, And give him the glory, great things he has done. (LUYH page 45) (*) PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you C: And also with you. P: Let us pray O Lord, keep Your family the Church continually in the true faith that, relying on the hope of Your heavenly grace, we may ever be defended by Your mighty power; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. (Please be seated.) God Speaks to Us SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Reading for the Fifth Sunday After Epiphany is from the fortieth chapter of Isaiah. 21 Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? 22 He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. 23 He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. 24 No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff. 25 "To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. 27 Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, "My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God"? 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of -3- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:21-31 NIV L: C: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle reading is from 1 Corinthians, chapter nine. 16 For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. 18 What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights as a preacher of the gospel. 19 Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. 1Corinthians 9:15-27 NIV L: C: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (*) RESPONSE HYMN (Please stand to sing.) Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son of Man! Truly I’d love thee, truly I’d serve thee, Light of my soul, my joy, my crown. -4- (LSB #537 st. 1) Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 (*) HOLY GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the first chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon's mother- in- law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demonpossessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!" 38 Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come." 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. Mark 1:29-39 NIV P: C: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. CHILDREN'S MESSAGE (Parents, please feel free to come forward with your younger children.) HYMN “Fight The Good Fight” ............................................................................ LSB 664 PASTOR’S MESSAGE “To Win As Many As Possible” – 1 Corinthians 9:16-27 HYMN We Respond To God’s Word “What Wondrous Love Is This” ................................................................ LSB 543 (*) NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. -5- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. God Sends Us Forth to Serve and Proclaim (*) BENEDICTION P: "To Him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy--to the only God our Savior, be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!" The religion of Islam has been quite popular in the news and other media given our involvement in the Middle East area. It goes all the way back to when Abraham told Hagar to leave along with her son Ishmael. Where did it come from? Does it have anything in common with Christianity? How do we witness to those of Islam in our world today? There are many questions and myths about the Islamic religion. Let’s explore those together and learn exactly what the Islamic religion teaches to those who follow it. DCE Intern, Brian Weyers, leads this discussion in the North Fellowship Hall. Please remove a heart from the tree and return the purchased item to the collection box by the tree. 7 Week of 2-8-2015 The Week at a Glance SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7 WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11 POBLO Sewing—NFH—10 am HOLY COMMUNION - 5:30 pm Japanese Bible Study—NFH—1 pm SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 8 Youth Chimes (7-12)-Sanctuary—5:45 pm Men’s Bible Study-Upper Rm-6 pm Alleluia Singers - Rm L-3 - 6 pm Cherub Choir - Rm 101 - 6:05 pm Confirmation - 6:10 pm Angelic Chimes (2-6) - Sanctuary - 6:30 pm Sounds of Praise - Choir Rm - 7 pm Rebecca Circle—7:30 pm WORSHIP - 8 and 10:40 am Blood Pressures - 9 am Sunday School - 9:20 am PYROS—9:20 am Adult Bible Classes - 9:20 am Instruments of Praise—4:30 pm IGNITE—6 pm Agape CC—6:30 pm THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12 Faithfully Fit Forever - Rm L-3 - 8:15 am Circuit Conference—FOC—9 am Sarah Circle—SFH—9 am Chancel Chimes—Sanctuary—7 pm MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9 Quilters - NFH - 8 am Story Time w/Kristin—Narthex—10:15 am Tools for Caregivers—UR—1:30 pm Emmanuel CC—6:30 pm FCCI Workshop—FH—6:30 pm FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13 TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 Men’s Bible Study - Rm 102 - 9 am Ladies’ Bible Study - NFH - 9 am FFF - Rm L-3 - 10:30 am Elderberries—SFH—11:30 am RLCW Exec—SFH—6 pm Stewardship—Rm 102—6 pm GTO Team—Library—6:15 pm Trustees—Rm 202—6:30 pm Youth Board—Youth Rm—6:30 pm SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14 God’s Grace #1—Rm 102—8:30 am Sisters in Christ CC—Upper Rm—9 am HOLY COMMUNION - 5:30 pm SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 15 HOLY COMMUNION - 8 and 10:40 am Cholesterol Screening—NFH—8:30 am Blood Pressures - 9 am Sunday School - 9:20 am Adult Bible Classes - 9:20 am Compassionate Friends—UR—7 pm Church Council—7:30 pm Circuit Forum—1:30 pm Japanese Christian Fellowship—4 pm IGNITE—6 pm Partners in Christ CC—6:30 pm 8 Week of 2-8-2015 “Making Him Known” But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 PAUL: Making Him Known To The Nations BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 1 Corinthians 9:19 NIV POINTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK: “Missionary Basics” 1. Go where God leads 2. Be flexible 3. Show a be er way of life 4. Stand firm on the basics 5. Give it everything you’ve got Hymn Notes: We are in the Church Season of Epiphany. Epiphany is from the Greek word meaning to “reveal” or “make manifest.” The sea‐ son of Epiphany is our me to focus on the revela on of “who” Jesus is: both true God and man. During this month our theme encourages us to share Christ with all people. In our first hymn today “Hail to the Lord’s Anointed” LSB 398 – Christ is revealed to us in the text sharing how he breaks oppression, takes away our sin, comes to those who suffer – giving light to them in their darkness, that all na ons shall adore him, and that He has victory over every foe. What a great teaching hymn that re‐ veals Jesus as true God and true man! Take it Home This week we will hear in worship about how Paul gave up the freedom that was his and became a slave to everyone in order to win, or bring, as many as possible to Christ. This was a noble pursuit for Paul. What does that look like, to make ourselves a slave to everyone in order to bring them to Christ? Today many Chris ans seem to think making ourselves a slave to eve‐ ryone means to follow the same sin and idols that those around us are following. How does that win people to Christ? If we look no different than others then we are not the ones who have won, they have. This week take home the confidence of the faith that you have in Christ. Take the form of a servant as Christ did, as Paul did. Stand out in your love for those who are lost. Do not lose yourself in this world but rescue the lost for Jesus sake. When you stand out as a servant of Christ you will save lives!
