Course Description: This course begins by looking at the origins of political thought in ancient
Greece, beginning with Herodotus of Halicarnassus (Bodrum), and his influence on the philosophies of
Plato and Aristotle. We will study in depth the political climate in which the trial and execution of
Socrates occurred and its impact on world history, as well as Plato's attempts to build a psychological
and natural account of justice in the face of the early convention (contract) theory of the Sophists. We
will finish with an examination of Aristotle's attempts to provide a cosmological/biological account of
the human being in a teleological political system that is also natural. The course, then divides into the
following sections:
