reasonable fee.
Due to the President's Day Holiday on Feb. 16, Monday classes
will begin on Feb. 23 and will run for only five weeks at a
prorated price. Wed. and Fri. classes will meet for six sessions.
Da Vinci Kids and Teens & Tools allow for a prorated rolling
admission throughout the session. Contact us for registration.
Early Bird Pricing is available. We are also offering
homeschoolers special pricing and sibling discounts. Please see
registration page for details.
For your convenience, you may pay by credit card either on-line
or at Newton's Attic, however, to help us reduce processing
fees, you can also pay by check (or cash) on the first day of class.

Age restrictions are listed in class descriptions. Please call
Dawn at 859-492-8511 to discuss exceptions and to register
outside the age restriction.
We sell bottled water, soft drinks and snacks. You may send your
own snacks instead. We provide a refrigerator, freezer, toaster
oven and microwave for your convenience. Parents are welcome
anytime, and we offer free wi-fi and a lounge.
We are located at 4974 Old Versailles Road on the corner
of Versailles and Old Versailles Road. From Lexington, take
Versailles Road toward the airport and travel 1.6 miles past Man
O War to a left onto Old Versailles Road. We are your first left
just before the Carpet Barn in an olive green building in a gravel
lot.
Students in the Beaumont busing district (Rosa Parks,
Beaumont, Dunbar) can request to be dropped at Newton’s Attic
by their school buses. Parents should contact Fayette County
Public School Transportation at 859-381-3855 to make this
request.

AutoDesk Inventor 3D CAD Modeling
Ages 11-18 • Fridays, 4:30–6:30 PM • 2/20-3/27
Instructor: Seth Bashore • Cost: $175 / Early Bird: $150
You’ll be amazed at the cool things you can design on your
computer after just one day of instruction on this free software that
you can download at home! Autodesk Inventor is a professional CAD
program popular in the manufacturing world that offers an easy-to-

use set of tools for 3D mechanical design, documentation, product
simulation and digital prototyping. This class will provide students
with an introduction of the basics of 3D CAD modeling, and students
will learn how to design basic shapes and simple edits of modeling.
You'll have to come to this class just to see everything you can
create! Instructor Seth Bashore is a senior at Lafayette high school
who has two years experience with hand drafting and Autodesk
Inventor. Seth has also completed Lego competitions for four years,
winning best design, best teamwork, and most points on the field
for many of those four seasons and has held many leadership roles
in the Boy Scouts. He enjoys taking apart and fixing almost anything
ranging from computers and small electronics to cars. Seth taught
Lego Robotics for Newton's Attic this past summer, and we are
pleased to have him back teaching Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD
modeling!
Drones 101: Fun With Quadcopters
Ages 11-18 • M, W or F 4:30–6:30 PM
Mondays, Five weeks, 2/23 - 3/23

Instructor: Keith Hollifield • Cost: $285 / Early Bird: $270
This class meets once a week with session options on M, W or
Fs. The price includes a Quadcopter with an $89 retail value
which students take home. A minimum of three students is
required for any given session of this class to run. Please share
this very special offering with friends and family who might be
interested. Quadcopters are the little flying “Drones”whose ease
of use and precision flight capability make them an excellent tool
for experimentation. Students will learn the basic concepts of
quadcopter construction and operation in this introductory course.
Each student will assemble his or her own miniature quadcopter
prior to receiving flight instruction. They will then construct
obstacles to be used in a final challenge. Students will compete
in a timed flight on the obstacle course they have designed to
crown the “King of Quads”. Instructor Keith Hollifield has had
a life-long passion for model building, electronic gadgets and
aviation and is a long time member and former president of the
Lexington Model Airplane Club. He has built and flown over 200
different model aircraft from those small enough for indoor flight
to jet powered models capable of 200mph. Keith holds a bachelors
degree from Eastern Kentucky University in Assets Protection
/ Risk Management, and his professional experience includes
government contracting and commercial electrical construction.
He put his passions to work when he opened Speeders Hobby
Center in Lexington, which he operated for several years. Other
interests include recording music, playing computer games with his
sons, experimenting with photography and fishing. He is currently
developing an aerial crop survey and mapping service using
autonomous unmanned aircraft. We are pleased to have Keith and
his many talents as part of the Newtons’ Attic team.

Lego Mindstorms NXT Multi-level
Ages 8-15 • Wednesdays, 5:00–7:00 PM • 2/18 - 3/25
Instructor: Steve Marionneaux • Cost: $175 / Early Bird: $150
Multi-level Lego Mindstorms NXT; For students 8 years and older,
this mult-level course is appropriate for complete beginners with no
Lego robotics experience. However, the small class size (no more
than ten students) allows students to work at their own pace, so
more advanced students can be accommodated. Students will be
taught to build and program a robot and will learn how to use the
NXT’s motors and sensors in small projects throughout the session.
Take this class to enjoy the follow-up intermediate course! Instructor Steve Marionneaux is a Woodford County high school teacher
and professional Lego coach.
Minecraft Mod With MCreator
Ages 9-14 • Wednesdays, 4:30–6:30 PM • 2/18 - 3/25
Instructor: Robert McGillvray • Cost: $185 / Early Bird: $175
We have adapted the Minecraft Mod class to allow students as young
as 9 to join in (previously for 11+). Early in the session, the students
will be introduced to MCreator, a program used to make Minecraft
mods without programming knowledge. It is easy to use, and can be
learned quickly. Once students are up and running with MCreator,
older or more advanced students will be introduced to Java code as
it applies to making modifications to this popular video game. The
mods will be limited in depth of changes to the game but will set the
basis for future modifications that the student may want to make. The
class will teach students to work with the code of other developers
and to read and decipher pre-existing code, a common practice in the
software development field. No previous programming experience is
required. Students will be better served if they have a Minecraft account prior to joining the class, but it is not required. If students would
like to work on code outside of class, they should bring a flash drive.
Da Vinci Kids
Ages 6-9 • M or F, 4:30–6:30 PM
M, Five weeks, 2/23 - 3/23 • Cost: $175 / Early Bird: $155
F, Six Weeks, 2/20 -3/27 • Cost: $195 / Early Bird: $175
Da Vinci Kids will be offered Mondays and/ or Fridays this session
given a minimum enrollment of three students per class. The price
is for one day a week for a six week period, but this class is available
for rolling admission on a prorated basis, so you will not pay for
missed classes. Also, a missed class can be made up on any other
night it is offered.
Science, math, engineering, art: Da Vinci was a master of it all. In
this class designed exclusively for young developing minds, students
get to follow in his footsteps by engaging in a variety of stimulating
activities that cut across a wide range of disciplines. Tool use,
building and engineering, chemistry and biology, art and design,
spontaneous improvisation, and healthy dose of brain and body play
are all mixed together to form this experience. Each activity will last
anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes as students move from one subject
to the next while making new discoveries about the diverse world
around them. Who knows - with this wide range of topics, your child
just may discover something of interest that he or she never even

Teens & Tools

Teens & Tools is a program for students 10 and older with varying
levels of experience using tools and building projects. This
structured, supervised class introduces students to engineering
process and hand and power tool use. Students work in the shop on
age appropriate projects for the duration of the class. More
experienced students can work on more advanced projects.
Students work on predesignated projects. No experience required.
This class will be offered on Mondays or Fridays with a minimum
requirement of three students per class to run the class. This class
allows for a prorated rolling admission so you do not pay for missed
classes. Also, missed classes can be made up on any night the class
is offered.
Minecraft Mod 11+ Java based
Ages 11-18 • Mondays, 4:30–6:30 PM • 2/23 - 3/23
Instructor: Robert McGillvray • Cost: $60 / Early Bird: $140
This is the original Minecraft Mod using a combination of MCreater
and Java programming with instructor Robert McGillvray. This class
is for students 11+ or students who have had previous Minecraft Mod
classes with us. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals
of Java coding, so this is not a class for younger students. The
Wednesday class is more appropriate for 9+ students who have never
taken Minecraft Mod before. Description: Join a world of cubes and
coding in this class for creating your own Minecraft mods! Students
will work with the popular video game Minecraft and will use Java
code as well as sound and image editing software to make their own
resource pack and eventually a mod for the game. The mods will
be limited in depth of changes to the game but will set the basis for
future modifications that the student may want to make. The class

Biology for Homeschoolers
Ages 10-18 • Fridays, 2:00 - 4:00 PM • 2/20 - 3/27
Instructor: Adrian Puckett
Designed to increase and enhance a basic understanding of life,
this introductory biology course provides foundational skills for any
student with an interest in exploring the natural sciences. Topics of
discussion will include the properties of life, levels of organization,
the scientific method, cell theory, and DNA. Students will have
the opportunity to work in a laboratory setting, with microscopes,
applying knowledge gained in class to preform experiments, and
investigate the behavior of both plant and animal cells. For students
10+ Instructor Adrian Puckett was raised in Lexington Kentucky,
and graduated from Lafayette Senior High School in 1996. A third
generation industrial electrician, who grew up in the construction
business, he worked locally for 12 years at B&H Electric Inc.
He's a 2013 graduate of the Bluegrass Community and Technical
College Honors Program, and a current senior at Eastern Kentucky
University, studying biology and geography. Adrian's a member
of the Kentucky Academy of Science, both Phi Theta Kappa and
Golden Key International Honors Societies, and Phi Sigma National
Biological Honors Society. He has trained in molecular genetics
as a KBRIN Scholar at the University of Kentucky, an Amgen
Scholar at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a McNair
Scholar at Eastern Kentucky University. His prior research projects
include ovarian cancer, lung cancer, and cardiomyopathy. Upon
graduation from EKU, Adrian will be attending medical school,
and has been recruited by more than 40 schools, including Yale,
Stanford, Cornell, and Brown Universities. His son, Bobby, a rising
9th grader at Sayre School, has enjoyed the hands-on science and
engineering programs at Newton's Attic, and Adrian is excited
about contributing to the ever-expanding repertoire of Newton's
Attic STEM programs.
Da Vinci Kids for Homeschoolers
Ages 6–9 • Fridays, 2:00 - 4:00 PM • Instructor: Lori Anne Stuart
Fridays, six weeks, 2/20 - 3/27, full session or single class option
Lori Anne has designed her science class to meet the standards for the
Newton’s Attic hands-on fun approach as well as the needs of a primary
school science curriculum, which she has developed for her gifted
seven year old daughter. This class will introduce the world of science
and engineering to children by using games, hands-on projects and by
learning fun and interesting engineering and science facts along the way.
Each week, the children will come home with a brief parent note that will
explain what we did and how you too can have fun at home with what the
children did in class.
Instructor Lori Anne Stuart home schools her two daughters, has taught
at a variety of co-ops in Lexington and has a degree in Child Development and Cognitive Theory. In addition to her home schooling responsibilities, Lori Anne as been teaching Ballroom Dance to children and
adults for over 15 years. We are thrilled to have her good energy and
creativity at Newton’s Attic.
JavaScript for Homeschoolers
Ages 10 - 18 • Fridays, 2:00 – 4:00 PM •2/20 - 3/27
Instructor: Robert McGillvray
Learn the basics one of today's most popular scripting languages.
JavaScript is an interpreted language that is used most often in web
applications embedded in Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML). This
class will teach students to utilize many of the most popular and
unique features of this language and prepare them to further their
expertise through practice and experience on their own. The instructor
will start with the very basics of coding and will progress to having the
students make interactive browser pages and implementing them in
HTML. By the end of class, students will have a very strong base for
continuing their Computer Science Journey, will have a few web pages
that can be locally loaded and viewed and an idea of how to make and
present their own web pages for employers or friends and even be able
to edit web pages they find online. Robert McGillivray is a Sophomore
at UK studying computer science, physics, and German language.
Robert has been involved in many programs including FIRST Robotics,
UK E-Day, UK ACM, and Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout. He
is a former Newton’s Attic student and volunteer and has participated
in many Newtons Attic projects, including the building of The Ballista,
aka the “Pumpkin Chunker.” We first discovered Robert when Bill
Cloyd mentored the Dunbar MSTC First Robotics team and then
worked with Robert's Engineering Problems class in the Dunbar MSTC
program, where Robert was also an FLL (First Lego League) and FTC
(First Tech Challenge) mentor. Robert been working at Newton’s Attic
since the summer of 2013 when he taught Wrestling Robots. Since
then, he has taught many classes during our after school and summer
programs including Java Programming, Raspberry Pi Programming,
Minecraft Mod, JavaScript, Robotic Gladiators and a special
homeschool C++ Coding & build skills class. Robert has also spent a
semester abroad in Germany and part of last summer traveling Europe
with his German host brother.
