Dear Parents and Guardians,
Always being prepared is imperative not only
when looking at the weather, but also as students
grasp new concepts and explain their thinking in
mathematics.
I have had numerous conversations about the
strength of West Irondequoit’s mathematics curriculum, in that it requires children to master
skills across mathematical understandings as well
as process skills. Our math program requires that
our students not only understand the basic facts
and concepts of mathematics, but are literate in
their ability to express this understanding. They
are expected not only to use mathematical notation-numbers to explain thinking, but also use
oral and written words to convey understanding
of concepts and processes.
I have been very impressed as I have witnessed
our students grow in their understanding of mathematical content. In addition, they also grow in
their skill to articulate understanding and find
creative ways to solve problems. So many times,
children find unique ways to solve a problem that
is mathematically sound. When this occurs it is a
powerful force in their learning careers and needs
to be celebrated!
I wanted to take some time and share with you
some questions that have recently come up,
along with some strategies to use with your children as they tackle math problems at home.
What should a parent do if the child tries
to solve a problem in a different way than
the parent learned it or in a way that
doesn’t seem efficient?
If a child’s reasoning is logical, that is an
important step in solving the problem. Let the
child explain his/her thinking orally, and the
parent should do the same. Determining different ways to solve a problem is strongly
encouraged in your child’s classroom.
What are some ways I can help my child
with their homework?
· Have your child explain to you their thinking when solving a problem
· Ask your child frequently about math problems solved at school
· If your child is stuck on a problem ask
questions that will help him/her to figure it
out in their own way
· Ask your child to re-state math problems
and questions in their own words
I hope these suggestions will be helpful as
you work with your child at home.
Best wishes to you and yours as we forge
ahead through the Rochester winter!
Sincerely,
Is getting the correct answer still the most
important part of the problem solving process?
Getting the correct answer is important, but being able to explain how the solution was derived
and makes sense is equally important.

Can parents read math homework problems
to their child, if the child is having difficulty
reading them?
Although our goal is for students to develop
independence in solving math problems, some
students may need assistance reading the problems. A parent may read the problems to their
child if he/she is having difficulty, just be sure to
communicate this with your child’s teacher.

Procedure For Reporting An
Absence / Tardy
Absences from school for any reason should be reported by phone on the day of absence and each successive day the child is out
of school. Please call the Health & Attendance Office at 336-3030 before 9 a.m. to report your child absent. Please leave your
child’s name, his/her teacher’s name and the reason they are not attending. Please keep your child home from school until they
have been fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. When your child returns to school a written note
is required by law.
If your child will be late for school for any reason, please also notify the Health & Attendance Office at 336-3030 prior to 9 a.m.
When your child arrives at school, a written note is required.
This procedure is used to make sure we know where your child is at all times. Calling the Attendance Line prior to 9 a.m.
will help eliminate calls to parents. Also, we are required to have a written excuse on file for all student absences, tardiness or early dismissals as part of their permanent record.

LOST AND FOUND
Please remind your student to check our lost and found for any items that they might be
missing. All unclaimed items will be donated to charity the end of March.
Prepping For 2015-2016
School Year
As our 6th graders prepare for 7th grade
next year, Dake Junior High must also
prepare for them. In February, the
LOTE department (Languages Other
Than English) will present to our students information which will help them
select their foreign language choice.
After the program, our 6th graders will
bring home a letter which asks you and
your child to make their selection.
Our students also make music choices
this month.
This may seem early. However, the
Dake administrative team starts to
build their schedules and teacher
assignments over February break.
Look for the ‘choice’ forms to come
home, and please return them prior to
February 12.

JANUARY STUDENTS OF
THE MONTH
CONGRATULATIONS!
January 2015
Dear Parents/Guardians:
This year at Rogers School we will offer a Changing Families program for students in grades 4-6 whose parents
are separated or divorced. These family changes may have an impact on school behavior and the child’s ability to
learn. Consequently, we provide a program to help in the adjustment, to help children see that there are others
going through similar changes, and that they are not alone.
I will be facilitating this support group, which will continue for eight weeks after school. We will begin after
the February recess. Items discussed in the group will be confidential so that students have a safe place to
share. As always, however, if a child reveals that he/she may be a danger to him/herself or others, you will be
promptly notified. I also encourage the children to share what we are doing within the group.
A group experience provides the opportunity for students to share their feelings about these issues, and to
learn how to solve some of the problems youngsters experience when families undergo major changes. In addition, we hope that your children will learn productive ways of communicating with others, as well as find support
from other students. Once again, this program is open to ALL fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students.
If you would like your child to participate, please sign the attached permission slip. Return it to me in an envelope to the school office by Monday, February 9.
If you have any questions regarding this program, please call me at 336-4716. Feel free to make any comments
on the permission form that may be helpful.
Sincerely,
Lisa Burt

In December, the Rogers Math Olympiad Team held its second competition.
We would like to congratulate the following “High Scoring Students” for their outstanding performance on
this contest:
+4: Phil Minnehan, Nicholas Travers, David Vanill
Here is a sample problem to try at home:
For the first half of the season, Alpha team won 2/3 of their meets. For the second half of the season, they
won 3/4 of their meets. If both halves of the season had the same number of games, what is the fewest
possible number of wins that they have?
(Answer: 17 wins)
Congratulations to the Team!

Builder’s Club
THANK YOU!
Thank you for supporting our December Hat Day! It was a huge success, we
raised $100. We were able to purchase four Wegmans gift cards for the
Irondequoit Food Cupboard to distribute to families.
At our next Builder’s Club meeting we will be making fleece tie blankets. The
blankets will then be paired with a book and presented to children in need in
the community. Our goal is to make 50 blankets.
DONATIONS NEEDED!
As our new year begins we will continue to building our community at Rogers
School and beyond. The Book and a Blanket project is back and we are in
need of your donations. We are in need of the following to make our project a
success:

fleece cut in one yard increments and in child-friendly patterns

Joanne Fabric gift cards to defray the cost of this project

new books appropriate for young children
This is a wonderful project that helps promote literacy. Please consider
making a donation to this worthy service project.
Physical Education News
Students will be concluding the floor hockey unit at the beginning of February. All grade levels have been
working on improving their skills in stick handling, passing and shooting. Students will get to display their
skills and knowledge of rules in game situations.
Our next area of study for our 4th and 5th graders will be our famous “Painless Dance” unit, which incorporates different movements to a variety of music. Students will be encouraged to express their own individuality as well as learn to perform together as part of a group. In addition, our 6th graders will be involved in a new unit which incorporates the use of jump bands. This unit will be a combination of jump rope
and dance.
Volleyball intramurals will start at the beginning of March. Students should listen to announcements for
the exact dates.
Mrs. Evans & Mr. Cardon
