An Inspiring Encounter
I meet quite
often with
GVR members.
Sometimes its
chance encounters at GVR
fitness facilities
or in the lobby
of the Member
Services Center.

office or over coffee at Posada Java
(Posada Java has great staff, good
coffee, and tasty treats!) The latter
encounters are mostly fun, but not
always. All conversations are important; sometimes they are a bit awkward and not necessarily comfortable.
Member concerns run the gamut of
all things GVR: money (annual dues,
tenant fees and guest fees) to pool
temperatures, concert queuing lines,
handicapped parking; and sports
courts (think tennis, pickleball).

February 18 is deadline to enter Green Valley Senior Games!
t’s time for Senior Games again - a
terrific opportunity for individuals over
the age of 50 to play and compete with
their peers throughout the month of March
in over 20 events in and around Green
Valley!
The games are open to the public and are
hosted by Green Valley Recreation. Registration runs through February 18th. Forms
are available at all GVR recreation centers
and at various sponsor locations, including
CareMore, Country Fair White Elephant,
Green Valley News and Sun, Green Valley
Recreation, Arizona Oncology, Green
Valley Hospital, Walgreens, Santa Rita
Outpatient Therapy, Northwest Medical
Center and KGVY 1080/100.7 Radio.
Volunteers are welcome and needed for
all events. Here is an opportunity make
new friends as well as receive a volunteer
t-shirt and the opportunity to support our
community! We encourage you to drop

Board Candidates and Seven Bylaws Amendments On Ballot for 2015
Two Member Forums Scheduled in February
Two Member Forums have been
scheduled to introduce GVR Board of
Directors candidates and to review proposed Bylaw Amendments scheduled for
the upcoming election in March.
The first forum will be held at Las Cam-
panas, Ocotillo Room, on February 10,
from 1 pm to 3 pm, and the second will
be at Santa Rita Springs, Anza Room, on
February 25, from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.
The 2015 GVR Board of Directors
candidates include Richard Kidwell,
Vicky Mournian, Kathy Palese, Leslie
Shipley, and Tony Zabicki. Four candidates will be elected.

off their chest, and it really
doesn’t matter if it’s about
what happened five years
ago or this morning. If I’m
available and uncommitted
with prior GVR business, I’m
there. An essential aspect
of my job requires listening
and learning, problem-solving when I can, and clarifying
policies and procedures
when I can’t.
Recently, I had a most
interesting if not uniquely
different meeting experience with members who
have been active in GVR in
various capacities through
the years. Most live in Green
Valley year-round, but at
least one snowbird was in
the group. They explained
that they supported a vibrant
and financially sound GVR,
and asked me about certain
corporate actions (and some
in-action) that occurred
within the past year. As
members in good standing
and homeowners of GVR
deed-restricted properties,
they voiced shared concern
about what they view as barriers to progress. Their goal,
they said, was to establish
an education and advocacy
group for corporate GVR actions that look to the future
and bring value to members.
It was no surprise that
they started-off talking
about pickleball (only one of
the group admitted playing
pickleball on occasion). They
cited recent data and news
stories about how pickleball brings value to active
adult communities and
mentioned the Green Valley
News’ young sports writer,
Christopher Boan. Boan
wrote in late December 2014
that more pickleball courts
was one of five things that
Santa could bring to meet
increasing demand and ‘improve all things sports and
recreation-related in Green
Valley’ (see ‘Five Things…’.
December 24, 2014 issue,
p. A10). The group couldn’t
understand why the only
ideas that surfaced in the
Outdoor Racquet Sports
Task Force were either to
repurpose other existing
GVR venues or squeeze a
couple of pickleball courts
into a neighborhood GVR
site. They pointed out that
while interest in pickleball
play in our town is growing
by leaps and bounds, golf
participation – formerly a
major draw to Green Valley
(even though GVR owns no
golf courses, thank goodness!) – has apparently
waned here as it has across

members who look to
the future and embrace
progress, adding value to
membership, and advocate for clearly defined
roles for governance and
staff, and I appreciated

questions: What does
GVR plan to do that will
contribute to Green
Valley being the destination of choice for active
adults and retirees?
Why is GVR resistant to
spending any money in
a manner that brings
added value to our community and provides
service to a large swath
of members?
Moving to other topics, this group showed
a good grasp of the
legal duty of Board
members to act in the
best interests of the
Corporation (instead of
representing their own
or parochial interests).
They questioned why
GVR chose not to screen
the hard questions. With
more than 33 years in
nonprofit management,
I have a good feel for
policy governance and
how the role of volunteer leaders differs from
those of staff. In brief,
the Board sets policy
and staff executes said
policy. What is sometimes missing from this
paradigm is the assertion of a collective will to
want to make a difference. When you add
differences in individual
attitudes and interests,
and a mindset of plenty
versus a mindset of
scarcity, it gets complicated. Is the glass halffull or half-empty? For
the ‘for progress’ folks
with whom I met, the
glass was clearly halffull, but it was only halffull. They expect a lot
from GVR leadership, me
included, and I’m okay

Joyce Finkelstein, Board President
Joyce Finkelstein is completing her
sixth year on the GVR Board. She is
currently the Board President. During her tenure on the Board, Joyce
has served as Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. She has also chaired the Board
Affairs, Planning/Fiscal Affairs, Bylaws, Nominations
and Elections Committees. Joyce and her husband,
Mike, moved to Green Valley in 1995. She worked as
the Executive Director of the Green Valley Community Coordinating Council for 10 years. Prior to her

Valley Fever: An invisible threat to dogs & cats

Valley Fever is an often unrecognized disease prevalent year around in Arizona. This fungal disease
is treatable when caught early, however can be fatal if left undetected and untreated. Valley Fever is
nonexistent outside the southwest, so people who travel from out of state with pets that become ill
must let their veterinarian know they visited this region.
Facts about Valley Fever:
• It aﬀects dogs, cats, other animals and humans.
• The many signs include coughing, fever, reduced appetite, lethargy, depression, limping,
weight loss and “slowing down.”

Trainers. Orientations start with a “Fitness Assessment,” that demonstrates how your personal fitness
compares to the national average for people in your age group. Afterwards, you will go to the fitness
room where trainers will demonstrate how to use equipment. Please wear appropriate clothes and
shoes. If you are not interested in participating in the introduction and only want to learn how to
use equipment, please arrive around 45 minutes after the beginning of the class. Fitness Centers are

There’s a huge advantage to
groups obtaining “club status” at
GVR. Just ask Lee Curtis and the
GVR Amigas Club.
Amiga in Spanish means “girlfriend,” and according to their website, the Amigas Club is “A GVR Club
for women to meet new friends,
join Interest Groups, and explore the
treasures near Green Valley.”
Approximately two years ago,
club president Curtis and a small
group of former “Newcomers”
decided to form their own club that
is more flexible and accommodating than the “Newcomers” model
that had been in place for over two
decades.
The original “Newcomers Club”
conducted only two events per
year. Their spring event was a fund
raiser, and their fall orientation was
when new women were allowed to
join and divide into several smaller
interest groups that operated
separately from the whole. Because the Newcomers Club was
not an official GVR club, they had
to pay for meeting space, limiting
the number of events per year they
could sponsor.
Having “club status” at GVR
allows the Amigas Club to reserve
space for free at any GVR multipurpose meeting room. They now
conduct four potluck luncheons
per year, host monthly coffees on
Saturdays and have monthly “Meet
and Greet” socials where women
may attend and/or join the club
