February 1, 2015 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners: While Father is away, he has asked me to write the pastoral letter. The readings this week move on from the call to ministry. Our gospel reading is still from the first chapter of Mark. Mark covers a lot of ground in his first chapter. He has no nativity story. He begins with prophecy from Isaiah, quickly followed by John the Baptist’s ministry, the baptism of Jesus by John, Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness, and John’s arrest, which leads directly to the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. By verse 21 Jesus is beginning his ministry at a synagogue in Capernaum, a town on the Sea of Galilee, northwest of Nazareth. For Mark, the importance of the Gospel was in ministry and in teaching and healing in particular, which Jesus does with “authority”, meaning that unclean spirits obey him and that he teaches on his own, without reference to others. Our ministries at Holy Rosary are not authoritative in that sense; we minister as disciples. Today and Monday we have sacramental preparation meetings, CYO basketball games and Youth Ministry activities. All week, groups such as St. Vincent de Paul, Little Blessings, Book Club, RCIA, and Bible Study groups gather for their activities. On Wednesday the school is explaining STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education to students in grades 3 through 8 and their bewildered parents. On Thursday, Father resumes the Gospel of Mark at 9:00 AM, and Millie Thompson continues her Roman Empire history classes. Ladies Fellowship and Crafts is in the School Hall in the evening. The Women’s Association meets after First Friday mass this week, and Saturday evening the New Life Group meets in the Pastoral Center. Families with elementary school children will enjoy the Lenten Family Morning next Sunday between masses. Ministry is thriving at Holy Rosary! We welcome Father Haydock back! Today your Stewardship Commission will present an Introduction to Holy Rosary for all newcomers to the parish at 10:15AM. If you have questions about parish programs join us in the Parish Office meeting area on the lower level of the Pastoral Center. We will have coffee and refreshments waiting for you! It is income tax time, which brings up bad memories of last year’s national tax fraud. To simplify your life it is advisable to file your taxes early before the bad guys do, whether you were victimized last year or not. New information from the Archdiocese is available on our website, holyrosaryedmonds.org. John Russell, Pastoral Associate for Stewardship and Information Technology [email protected] (425) 977-4545 Read next week’s Gospel: Mark 1:21-28 Gospel Summary Much of Jesus’ teaching took place in a synagogue and specifically in today’s reading, the synagogue at Capernaum was filled with Jewish people from Galilee. Jesus’ listeners were surprised by his knowledge and authority. He especially surprised them when he cast out an evil spirit from one of the men. The evil spirit recognized who Jesus was and called him “the Holy One of God.” The people didn’t understand this meaning. Only the evil spirit recognized Jesus. The people, however, were impressed by Jesus’ deeds and brought others to him for healing. Reflection for Families It is an awesome responsibility to have authority over another person. Our very use of that authority has the potential of lifting people up or tearing them down. The greatest responsibility we have rests in the authority we have over our children. The words we choose, the tone of voice we use to speak to them and the actions our children see us take, relate to them the authority Jesus has over us. It’s often a sobering experience to think back over the day and recall what kind of witness we’ve been for Jesus. Our hope is that we can try again tomorrow. Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family We may not be able to exorcize evil spirits, but as a family, suggest places in your school, work place, neighborhood or community where evil (or something unjust) exists. Make a plan and take an action as a family to right this wrong. Discussion Starters 1. Just like Jesus sent the evil spirit from the man, someone once helped me get over something troubling when… 2. People were looking to Jesus to perform healings and miracles. A miracle I witnessed was when… 3. One person of great authority who I think is most like Jesus is… .....http://rclblectionary.com/ ADULT FAITH FORMATION: The combined Centering Prayer and 40 Weeks Follow-Up group will begin to meet on Tuesday, February 17th. The same format will be followed in the Tuesday morning sessions from 9-10:30AM and Tuesday evening sessions from 6:30-8PM. After that we’ll meet every 2-3 weeks. The format will be to review a prayer practice, pray for about 30 minutes, and have time for check-in and discussions of our spiritual journeys for about 30 minutes. A schedule will be available at the meetings. Also, we’ll begin to list the topic for each session. So, the first Tuesday’s topic will be “Prayer Life Elements.” In other words, what practices and habits do we need to develop to maintain an active prayer life in today’s hectic media saturated world. If you’re thinking of joining us for the first time or were in neither the Sunday Centering Prayer nor the 40 Weeks group, you’ll be warmly welcomed. Also, Thursday morning and evening the Matthew Bible Study continues with Session #21. ~Deacon Ray FAITH FORMATION Daily Prayer This Week The readings this week seem to be about healing and call. In our ongoing renewal, we can ask our Lord to be continually healed of what is getting in my way and to continually be more and more open to my call. Even though we are trying to be people who find intimacy with God in the very midst of our everyday lives, there might be moments this week when we plug into a really great connection with our Lord. So often that happens when we find ourselves in need of healing. Perhaps after many years of one part of our life being dominated by an unclean spirit, we discover a readiness to be whole again, pure again. Maybe we encounter a sin that has become “my” sin, my obstacle to growth in my relationship with God. This may be the week to open my heart to pure grace and reconciliation. This could be the week when we discover what a handicap fear itself is in my life. It may be the reason we don't ask or even reach out to touch Jesus for healing. This may be the week we are being invited to no longer be afraid and to let our Lord love us and heal us. Touching his cloak, without words, may be enough for us. This week, like so many, can be a time for us to be consciously aware of our being called - placed in a position of being his disciple. In that situation, whatever way the invitation comes to us, we are clearly facing an opportunity to be a source of good news, rather than bad news; to love tenderly, rather than selfishly; to be a gatherer of others, rather than a divider; and to be a source of compassion, rather than a heartless judge. And, when that happens, we can delight in spending a bit more time with Jesus, comforting us for being his disciple there. We can “come away with him” for even a brief moment and give thanks that we had that taste of his ministry, happening through us. When we rest each night this week, expressing our thanks for this daily prayer is quite in order. ....from the “Weekly Guide for Daily Prayer” http://www.creighton.edu/collaborativeMinistry/online.htm MARRIAGE & FAMILY LIFE God of love, you have made the love of woman and man the mirror of your everlasting love. May we reverence all married couples and make it possible for them to grow in their love for you and for each other every day. Bless them with passion for each other. Give them a great commitment to each other as they deal with the secular world we live in and master the decisions they need to make together. Keep them faithful to each other and to You. In Jesus’ name we pray. RCIA: The next session is Wednesday, February 4th, in the Pastoral Center, Rm 206. The topic for the week is Illness and Healing.
