Cryomicroscopy Research Scientist

Position description and person specification
Context
The Francis Crick institute (the Crick) is a partnership between the Medical Research Council (MRC),
Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the Wellcome Trust, University College London (UCL), Imperial College
London and Kings College London. It is a registered charity whose purpose is to conduct biomedical
research into all aspects of human health and disease.
The Institute will be a world-leading centre of biomedical research and innovation. It will promote
connections between researchers and disciplines and between academic institutions, healthcare
organisations and businesses. Dedicated to research excellence, the institute will have the scale,
vision and expertise to tackle the most challenging scientific questions underpinning health and
disease. It will be world-class with a strong national role—training scientists and developing ideas
for public good. Due to open in November 2015, The Crick will be located in a new, purpose built
research centre in central London (Brill Place next to St. Pancras International) and will house some
1,250 researchers and 250 support staff.
The position of Cryomicroscopy Research Scientist has been created to:
Perform work on experimental single particle cryomicroscopy of macromolecular
complexes and/or tomography in the Rosenthal Group with a focus on instrumentation,
data acquisition, and automation. You will contribute to the management of instruments
and development of new methods.
Objectives
Specific objectives will include, but not be limited to:

The post-holder will conduct a range of research activities and projects in the
Rosenthal laboratory including the design and implementation of experimental
protocols in electron cryomicroscopy, and work on methods for automatic data
collection and image capture in the context of single particle projects and
tomography.

The post-holder will contribute to the management of high-end cryomicroscopes
closely related to the group’s research activities including the FEI Polara and Spirit
microscopes, detectors, and associated equipment, and maintain and update
microscope-related computer hardware and software.

The post-holder will be expected communicate at group discussions all aspects of
laboratory and scientific project management, contribute to the preparation of

scientific manuscripts, internal reports, and participate in activities related to the
group’s transfer to the Francis Crick Institute.
Person Specification
The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: Bold, Imaginative,
Open, Dynamic and Collegiate, in addition to the following:
Essential
 A PhD in biological, physical, or engineering sciences.
 Research experience and expertise in electron microscopy.
 Must be able to plan time efficiently, have excellent communication skills,
and be able to work both independently and in a team setting.
Desirable:
 Experience in experimental electron cryomicroscopy, field emission gun
microscopes, and/or electron detection.
 Experience in data analysis single particle images or tomography data.
 Postdoctoral experience in conducting cutting-edge research in
experimental electron microscopy and/or structural biology.
 Demonstration of scientific expertise and excellence by means of authorship
in peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognized scientific
journals.
