MUSTANG MEMO
McKinley Middle Magnet School of Visual & Performing Arts
1550 Eddie Robinson, Sr. Dr.
Principal’s Message
We really have started 2015 on the right foot
here
at McKinley. This month’s Memo features
just a small sampling of some of the rigorous
academics, amazing art, terrific athleticism, and
entertaining performances our phenomenal
Mustangs accomplish every day. I am continually
impressed by the actions of the McKinley Magnet
scholars both inside and outside the classroom. I
also want to thank our hardworking teachers
who strive for nothing short of excellence with
our children. As we move further along this
second semester, I want to ensure that the
momentum keeps building and we continue to
aim for success!

Soccer League Runners-Up!
A big congratulations goes out to our Boys and
Girls Soccer Teams on their amazing and
victorious seasons! Coached by 8th grade
Louisiana History teacher, Mr. Nardozi, both
teams made it all the way to the Middle School
Tournament and both placed as Runners-Up.
As a result of their all-around team effort, the
girls had a terrific season that got them to the
championship. On their way to the top, they
defeated a Sherwood team they had lost to in
the regular season.
The boys pulled together as a team to make it to
their first championship match in recent
memory. They were able to come out of the
semi-finals match after an intense penalty kick
shootout that ended in McKinley’s favor.
Pictured to the left are both teams with their
trophies!

University for Parents
LEAP & iLEAPing into PARCC
Do you have questions about testing this Spring?
Do you know what test your child will be taking this Spring?
Do you know the testing dates for 2015?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, then University for
Parents is for you! Two sessions will be held on Wednesday, February
18, 2015. The first session will be held from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm and
the second from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Both sessions will be held in the
McKinley Auditorium. Topics to be discussed will include testing dates,
testing resources, and more!
Beyond Bricks EBR is a process driven by
volunteers looking to gather input from the
entire community on how to drive excellence
within our school system. Beginning with a
series of facilitated conversations, the process
will capture the community’s vision for
education and then determine the changes
that need to occur to fulfill that vision.
There will be 14 Listening Sessions throughout the East Baton Rouge Parish School
District. The sessions will be held at local churches, community centers, BREC facilities,
and schools. Every site will have area co-host leaders (a member of the Interfaith
Federation of Greater Baton Rouge), and a facilitator at each table. At each session,
there will be a 10-minute visual presentation, followed by table discussions led by a
facilitator. All information will be gathered and built into the community’s vision for
education excellence. The Listening Sessions are open to everyone in the community.
The Listening Events will last no more than 90 minutes. Participants can attend one near
their home or any other site of their choosing.
Please email the name of any education advocate you believe should be involved to:
[email protected].

Focus on the Classroom
An inside look at what’s happening in our classrooms!
Mustangs in Motion
Ms. Thomas’ dance classes are always on
the move! Students create their own
choreography integrating elements of
dance learned earlier in the school year.
Pictured is the beginning dance class
practicing a piece accompanied by Disney
music. The intermediate classes are
working on Broadway routines, and
advanced students are gearing up for our
Brotherhood/Sisterhood Program with
dances from cultures around the world.
True Talent
Mr. Morton’s Talented Art students are truly gifted artists. Throughout the year, his students work on a variety of
individualized projects. Above, Naana Ennin (left) and Trinity Washington (right) perfect their water droplets
drawings. Other students are working on Louisiana-themed pieces and unique abstract drawings called Zentangles.
Word Play
Chancelier "Xero" Skidmore is a
world renowned Spoken Word
teaching artist who has been doing
Common Core aligned creative
writing and performance
workshops in some of our ELA and
Theatre classes. Forward Arts,
Inc. sponsors teen open mic afterschool clubs, multiple teen public
performances, and an annual AllCity Slam competition. More
information about the organization
