49 February 12 to 18, 2015 Valentine’s hangover event set Dave Whitfield CANMORE Many people have important, memorable dates they can look back on over the years – birthdays, weddings, births, deaths ... Unlike many people, though, Ottawa folk/roots singer songwriter Lynne Hanson has a very specific date which she identifies as one where she turned her life around – Sept. 1, 2011. On that date, Hanson, after a night of drinking, “saw the next morning that I had to get things under control. I woke up one day and decided I had to make a change. I stopped cold turkey, I white knuckled it, but I had great friends to support me; that’s the support system I used. “And the first of the month date works for me. I’m very goal oriented and it helps to have a clear anniversary date to look at. And it wasn’t just alcohol, I had to get control of my life, get hold of my demons and leave more time for songwriting. “I was a disaster as a human being and I had to get my proverbial s--t together.” Hanson (vocals, acoustic guitar), along with Fraser Holmes (vocals, electric guitar), play Canmore’s Good Earth Cafe, Feb. 15 as a Valentine’s Day Hangover show – a celebration of love, heartache and everything in between. Based in Ottawa, Hanson is heading west with her latest album, River of Sand, an album that came about after a four-year hiatus and as a result of her getting her life under control. River of Sand is Hanson’s fourth album and one that leans heavily on personal experience. The title track and “Whiskey and Tears” are both sober looks back at life as it was before, “Heaven and Hell” is a brooding contemplation of depression and “This too Shall Pass” is a delicate and courageous confession about its darker moments. “Foolish Things” is an intimate melody about losing track of one’s priorities, while “Colour My Summers Blue” is a ballad about drinking to kill the pain of a lost romance. River of Sand includes life observations and biographical events, “and stuff I’ve seen along the way,” said Hanson. “I’ve melded it all together and audiences have really been liking it. “I wanted it to be a reflection of me as a songwriter, and I took my time, I had to find my voice again.” With River of Sand out, Hanson said she’s also working on new material for a “specialty project” that she’s not revealing at this time. THU. RMO., OCT 9/14 – 3x50 {process} LMG: COAST HOTEL (3x50) “For me, songwriting happens when it happens. Sometimes it’s me writing on little pieces of paper, other times it’s while sitting with my guitar after I’ve set aside some time to work.” Part of the Hanson/Holmes tour will take place as part of a Home Routes house concert series, the rest in smaller, intimate venues like Good Earth. “House concerts have really taken off,” said Hanson. “You can play almost every night and they feed you well. I eat better at those than at home. “And we’re hoping for really, really good roads while we’re out.” Hanson describes her music as “porch music with a little red dirt” or like a favourite pair of jeans that are rough around the edges, faded and worn through in spots, with a bit of honestly-acquired dirt ground into the seams. Tied with Lucinda Williams on Penguin Eggs’ Top Ten Albums of 2014 list and called “one of the standout country albums of the year” by the Irish Times, Hanson’s River of Sand has seen its creator duly rewarded for the artistic courage she showed in making the record. River of Sand was released simultaneously in the UK, Europe, and Japan via Continental Song City.
