WHAT IS LENT?
OUR LENTEN OPPORTUNITY
Character requires discipline even as we depend
on the power of the Holy Spirit. There are seasons
in the Christian Calendar when we give ourselves to
growing in Christlikeness both in depending on God
and mastering ourselves as we concentrate on all
that Jesus went through to purchase our salvation on
the cross. Hence it is a marked by repentance, self
discipline and self-giving as we meditate on the cross
and the finished work of Jesus Christ our Lord. Lent
(from Old English “Lencten” meaning Spring) refers to
the fast of 40 days before Easter. The first mention of
such a period occurs in the Canons of Nicea (AD 325
Canon 5).
In Mark 2:18-22 we see critics of Jesus who observed
that His disciples didn’t go without food and drink
from 6am to 6pm. The Pharisees were proud that
they fasted (but often for the wrong reasons). What
Lenten discipline will you be practising these 40
days in Lent beginning this Wednesday, 18.2.15 as
we focus on Jesus’ fasting and being tempted in the
wilderness (Mt 4:1-11; Mk 1:12-13; Lk 4:1-3)? Which
of the following do you think is the best reason for
praying, worshipping, fasting or doing good works
and attending Ash Wednesday Service, 7am or 6pm
this Wed, 18.2.15 (Mt 6:1, 16-18)? So that:
[ ] Other people will think you are good?
The custom may have originated in the prescribed
fast of candidates for baptism and the number forty
suggested by the 40 days’ fast of Moses (Deut 9:9),
Elijah (1 Kg 9:8) and especially our Lord himself (Mt
4:2, Mk 1:12-13; Lk 4:1-13). The Western Church
normally left out the Sundays and the practice
commencing from Ash Wednesday is first attested to in
the 7th Century Gelasian Sacramentary. The period of
Lent ends with Holy Week (Good Friday). Apart from
fasting, this time of penance is observed by abstaining
from festivities, by almsgiving, and by giving more to
religious exercises.
[ ] God will realise that you are a little better than most
people?
[ ] God may enjoy you and the time you spent with
Him, and, that others may know Christ through
your prayers and witness?

The rate of divorce and marital breakdown among those
married less than 5 years is increasing sharply. The
couple’s pledge to stay together ‘till death do us part’
cannot be taken for granted. What is essential in building
strong marriages and relationships that last? The course
will look at critical and practical issues in a marriage
relationship. Topics include right and wrong reasons for
marriage, building your marriage on the foundation of
respect, faithfulness, commitment and love, the essential
3 A’s in a healthy relationship, effective communication
& conflict resolution, relationship with in-laws, financial
issues, roles and responsibilities and growing in
oneness.
The Gospel is the result of the work of the Holy Spirit in
revival on the one hand, and the prayers, holy lives and
faithfulness of God’s people on the other. The seminar
will focus on two movements in Church history and the
lessons we can learn from them today on discipleship,
holiness and revival.
• The Moravian community which sent out a total of
2,158 missionaries in its first 150 years. American
missiologist, A. T. Pierson, said this of the Moravians:
“Holy living, ceaseless praying and cheerful giving
constitute their conception of discipleship…”
The course is compulsory for those who want to marry in
the Cathedral.
• Early Methodism, under John Wesley, grew to almost
5% of England’s population in its first 100 years. Roy
Hattersley, a former Deputy Labour Party leader in
Britain, said Methodism “encouraged the working poor
to be ambitious, industrious and respectable…”

Pray for those seeking to alleviate physical suffering
by clearing landmines and rebuilding infrastructures,
homes, hospitals, schools and churches. Pray
for those who are suffering from the wounds
(physical, psychological, spiritual …) for healing.
Reconciliation is a painstaking process and the sheer
number of those hurting means that more counselling
and training are long-term needs. ‘Lord, we need your
grace and mercy …’ (Source: Operation World, 21st

• Ash Wednesday this Wednesday (18 Feb)
“Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me,
let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow
me…’” (Matt 16: 24). During this period of Lent, let us
reflect together on what it means for each one of us to be
distinctive in mindset, values, conduct and life in a world
that is in need of Christ.
• Gambling (3/3) – What the Bible says about the Grip of
Attraction, the Grind of Addiction, and the Grace from
Atonement. It will also look at how a gambler can be
‘rescued’ physically and spiritually and how we can
protect ourselves, our family, church and community
from the dangers of gambling.
were uprooted, their homes and churches destroyed
and hunger was used as a bargaining chip in the
power play for aid. One in 350 Angolans is a victim
of landmines and 70-90% of the population live in
proverty. Greater than the physical damage are the
psychological, social and spiritual wounds which will
require years to overcome.
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and marks the
beginning of the 40-day liturgical period of prayer and
fasting till Resurrection Sunday. Let us pray that it
would be a season for believers to set aside time to
meditate and reflect on God who gave us His only
Son, Jesus Christ, to be the sacrifice for our sins
and an example and standard of godly life for us to
endeavour to follow.
• Budget Statement for Singapore
The Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam will

We pray for God’s hand and guidance for every good
