11 April 2015 The Mall Porta Nuova, Milan CODICE MIA | REVIEWERS PROFILES JOE BAIO Joe Baio is a lawyer, member of the Willkie’s Litigation Department, and a prominent art collector from New York. He started collecting photography in 1989 and by the mid nineties had already gathered a remarkable number of works by important international artists. Fascinated by the photographic language, he attended several courses at ICP (International Center of Photography) in New York where he had the opportunity to exchange views and opinions with professionals experts. He later decided to embark on a career as a lawyer, specializing in corporate law. In less than ten years his collection grew to count over 2000 images. Following his original passion, that often led him to taking portraits of his children, he started collecting pictures of children and teenagers photographed by emerging and famous artists. Baio is also a supporter of the InMotion Photography Benefit, an auction house helping lowincome mothers. Moreover, he actively encourages many young authors and contemporary artists, thus demonstrating his strong interest for the latest projects in the research of visual arts. KATY BARRON Katy Barron is a photography curator and art consultant specialising in advising clients on collecting photography, either for pleasure or investment. She has had over 20 years of experience of the museum, commercial art, and photography world - curating museum exhibitions in the UK and abroad; working in one of London’s leading photography galleries; and mentoring and advising photographers. Katy writes about photography, notably for the online magazine Photomonitor and is curating a number of photography exhibitions to be shown over the next couple of years. 1 PAOLO BRODBECK Paolo Brodbeck started collecting in the 90’s, with works from the Arte Povera and Forma 1 movements. With the years, he has concentrated mainly on German artists, and more particularly on conceptual arts. His collection counts many sculptures and installations by internationally renown artists, the majority of which is European. In the field of photography, his vast collection boasts works by Thomas Ruff, Luigi Ghirri, Urs Luethi, Erwin Wurm, Carmelo Nicosia, Maria Domenica Rapicavoli, Federico Baronello, Lida Abdul, and Jan Vercruysse, among others. In 2007, he acquired the space where his Foundation now is now located (an old 6000m² licorice factory). After restructuring part of the building, since 2009, the Foundation dedicates itself to the realization of exhibitions by young artists who are supported through a residency program. The Brodbeck collection itself has often been the object of exhibitions. The Brodbeck Foundation deals with didactical programs specifically aimed at schools of all grades and levels. Throughout 2015, it will concentrate on a project entitled “Piccole cose (per grandi contesti)” [Small things (for big contexts)] which will involve many actors of contemporary art through different workshops, seminars and conferences. THIERRY CATTOIR Thierry Cattoir is a Belgian branding architect at Remarkable Europe, which he founded in 1989, active in Brand Strategy, Brand Creation and Brand Protection. Born in 1962, he lives in Ghent (Belgium) with his wife, three children and two cats. He is also an avid art collector who mainly, but not exclusively, focuses on European and Latin American Humanitarian Photography and Photojournalism. The collection, which began with the acquisition of a vintage photograph by August Sander, has steadily grown and now features works by Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis, Flor Garduño, Ed van der Elsken, Elliot Erwitt and Dorothea Lange, among others. In addition to photography, his art collection also includes sculpture and modern and contemporary painting. Being a Honorary Judge in Commercial Affairs and a European trademark attorney, he often intervenes in legal and commercial matters concerning art. Moreover, he actively promotes the link between marketing and art through his role of Master Marketeer and President of Stima - the Belgian leading marketing federation. 2 LISA K. ERF Lisa K. Erf is director and chief curator of the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, one of the oldest and most extensive corporate collections in the world, founded by David Rockefeller in 1959. She is responsible for developing and maintaining a permanent collection of more than 30,000 objects located in 450 offices across the globe. Erf continues the program’s mission to support living international artists who are shaping the future through their creative vision. In 2012, Erf organized Spectacular Vernacular, an exhibition coinciding with J.P. Morgan’s sponsorship of Paris Photo. In the same year she partnered with the Latin American Private Bank to produce the publication Transpolitico: Art in Colombia 1992-2012. In recent years, Erf organized Collected Visions: Modern and Contemporary Works from the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection and produced the short film In the Company of Art (2009). A graduate of The University of Illinois (BFA and MFA), Erf has more than 20 years of experience as a curator, educator and administrator in corporate, academic, non-profit, and public art sectors. She is an advisor and frequent speaker on topics related to art collecting and trends. GIORGIO FASOL Giorgio Fasol – a great contemporary art passionate – founded Agi Verona Collection, a significant collection that counts numerous photographs by artists such as Elisabetta Benassi, Vincenzo Castella, Lynn Davis, Lara Favaretto, Nan Goldin, Cyrpien Gaillard, Candida Höfer, Roni Horn, Jitka Hanzlova, Gabriel Orozco, Andres Serrano, Thomas Struth and Francesco Vezzoli, among others. In 1988, many works from the collection were exhibited at Arte Fiera Bologna for an exhibition curated by Silvia Evangelista and dedicated to the history of Italian collecting. In 2010, at MART (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto), Agi Verona Collection was the focus of the “Languages and Experimentations” exhibition on young artists in a contemporary collection, curated by Giorgio Verzotti with Hans Ulrich Obrist’s extraordinary intervention. In 2014, Giorgio Fasol and Italian collectors Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Anna Rosa and Giovanni Cotroneo, were invited to exhibit some of their favourite artworks for the celebration of Italian art at “La Gioia” exhibition in the Maison Particulière in Brussels. 3 CHIARA MASSIMELLO © Davide Bozzalla Chiara Massimello graduated from studies of History of Modern Art at the University of Turin. For many years she has worked with art and photography galleries, such as the Marco Voena gallery, the Ermanno Tedeschi Gallery, and with Photo & Contemporary for four years. She has curated many exhibitions and projects with important photographers and personalities of the artistic world, such as “Fifty Kids” with Elliott Erwitt, “Landscape” with Franco Fontana, “L'anima, un paesaggio interiore” with Franco Fontana, Giorgio Faletti and Francesca Lavazza, and “Layers of Malta” with Vincenzo Castella. She curates books and shows for private collections, and coordinates editorial and exhibiton projects for both public and private institutions, such as the Compagnia di San Paolo and Ersel. For the last three years she has been consultant for Christie’s Turin and Piedmont. She enjoys collecting both historic Italian photography and contemporary photography. CLAUDIO PALMIGIANO Claudio Palmigiano was born in Milan, where he still lives and works, on July 18th 1954. He graduated from law studies, and is a lawyer specialized in art, transport and insurance law. He is married to Maria Grazia Longoni, also a lawyer, with whom he shares his passion for art. Together with his wife, he curated all the legal and organizational aspects of the sale of the Tettamanti Collection. He has played an active journalistic role in media, television and radio fields, where he also directed communication and press offices. He has been a masters lecturer, whilst collaborating with sports federations and organizing international events. He was one of the founders of Acacia (Associazione Amici Arte Contemporanea), where he is now on the board, and is also a Christie’s board member. He has been collecting artworks since the 90’s, focusing mainly on photography. 4 DAN SOLOMON Dan Solomon is a collector, curator, publisher and artist interested in all aspects of photography. The Mary and Dan Solomon collection of photography is at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Highlights from his collection of Eugene Atget photographs were recently exhibited at Pace MacGill Gallery in New York. The first book from his publishing imprint by Nazraeli Press - Image, Music, Text by Idris Kahn - was published last year. He has been involved with the photography councils at The Getty Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and The National Gallery of Art. The New York based International Center of Photography exhibited his project Witness in 2013. Witness is also part of Nazraeli Press One Picture Book series. SOFIA VOLLMER DE MADURO Sofia Vollmer de Maduro curates and directs the photographic and documentary collection of the Alberto Vollmer Foundation in Caracas, Venezuela, that she founded in 1995. She has developed the Foundation's cultural program and has collaborated with international institutions, universities and museums in exhibitions and programs dedicated to photography and modern architecture. In recent years, she has focused strongly on promoting Latin-American photography and visual arts through conferences, portfolio reviews, workshops and publications. Her most recent editorial project, "Boulton Moderno" was presented at Paris Photo 2014. In 2012, she organized Sur-Sur Caracas, a photographic symposium centered on African and Latin-American photography, and is currently preparing the next edition for autumn 2015. She has more than twenty years experience in the non-profit and art sectors, and is also a trustee of the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, USA. 5
