The 11th Annual Marjory Stoneman
Douglas (MSD) Festival begins
Tuesday, February 24, with a
luncheon at Everglades Isle, 803
Collier Avenue, in Everglades City.
The Festival continues through
Saturday, February 28, at the
Museum of the Everglades, 105 West
Broadway.
The MSD Festival is an annual
five-day
celebration
of
the
Everglades and Marjory Stoneman
Douglas’ legacy, encompassing daily
activities, programs, workshops and
presentations, bringing together
specialists and professionals who
share enthusiasm for the Glades. All
activities are designed for the entire
family.
Best known for her work
“Everglades: River of Grass,” first
published in 1947, author, journalist
and environmental activist Marjory
Stoneman Douglas presented the
concept that the Everglades are not
simply a swamp but a vital part of
the South Florida eco-system.
On Saturday, February 28, from
10:00 am to 2:00 pm Art-in-theGlades will feature arts and crafts as
well as live music and food for sale.
Everyone is welcome: set up a table
at no charge. Phone Marya Repko at
695-2905 for more information.
A full list of activities is available
at www.evergladesmuseum.org and
all events are available at no cost
unless indicated. Reservations can be
made by calling the Museum at (239)
695-0008.
CITY COUNCIL REPORT
by Marya Repko
At the meeting on February 10, Mayor
Sammy Hamilton reported that Seafood
Festival on the previous weekend went
very smoothly. He said that we may be a
small city but we're strong and everyone
comes together to make the Festival
work well, thanks to all the volunteers.
He praised the Sheriff's Office as one of
the best in the country. He summarized:
there were 19 food vendors, 154 craft
booths, over $76000 in beer money, and
$26000 in soft drink sales by the school.
Friday night was probably the biggest in
the history of the Festival. The
importance of the event is reflected by
the VIPs that attended, from local
dignitaries to State representatives to
Governor Scott (photo above by Sue
Gentry) who made a surprise visit.
On behalf of CCSO, Crime
Prevention Officer Sue Gentry said it
was the easiest Festival she can
remember with a good crowd and that
she was amazed at how quickly it was
cleaned up.
She reminded us about scam emails
(purportedly from the IRS, banks, etc)
and said "don't click, just delete".
Councilor Parker Oglesby said he had a
scam phone call from the "IRS" and
checked it out; the real IRS does not
phone people so just hang up and never
give out private information.
The next City Council meeting will
be on Tuesday, March 3, at 5:30 p.m. in
City Hall.
If you have news, photos, announcements, or articles ... email [email protected] or phone 695-2397.

Welcome, Cpl.
Bonnie Bee, new
Youth Relations
Deputy
Cpl Bonnie Bee has worked for
the Collier County Sheriff’s
Office for 14 ½ years. She
began her career as a 9-1-1
dispatcher. After 6 years as a
Supervisor of Communications
Bonnie chose to transfer to the
Road Patrol with the intention of working her way to the Youth
Relations Bureau. After 8 years of working road patrol Bonnie
says she is very excited to finally have a chance to work with the
youth of our county and very grateful to have the opportunity to
now be working within the Everglades community.
Bonnie states “I believe everything begins and ends with our
children. They did not ask to be a part of our world, yet here they
are. Like us, they are facing the life they are being handed to the
best of their ability with whatever tools they are daily given. I feel
it is our job to make every attempt possible to equip them to the
best of our ability. One day the child we take care of today maybe
the adult deciding our future tomorrow.”
Welcome, Bonnie to our school and our community!
AQUACULTURE PROGRM
On March 28 there will be a presentation by the Everglades City
School students who are creating their first “Aquafest.” The
students are working with Dr. Joe West and conducting this event
through the Entrepreneurship Class. Assistant Principal James
Ragusa states that “Dr. West and teacher, Carey Walker, have
done an amazing job working with the students and we are
hopeful that this event can be an annual showcase of the
Aquaculture program.”
Volunteers Needed
Everglades City School is seeking volunteers for the classrooms,
media center and general office assistance. If you would like to
assist, please contact Angela Nicholson at 377-2852 or 377-9800.
Your assistance is both appreciated and needed!
Hello Parents, Staff, Students and Community,
A lot of preparation has gone into this year’s
Seafood Festival.
I want to thank the
community for allowing us to be a part of it. I
also want to thank our students and staff who
helped. It is truly a team effort that benefits
everyone. Basketball is over but softball and baseball are
beginning. I want to thank our coaches, Becky Welch (coaches
three sports), Diana Valdez, Matt Chappell, Anna Yacono
(coaches two sports), Dale Patt (coaches two sports), Shana
Secory and Jordan Major (coaches three sports) for all of the time
and effort they have spent this past season with our student
athletes. They are all role models and they give up a great deal of
their personal time to be with our kids. The next big school event
is the Fish Fry our students will be doing in March. Mr. Ragusa is
heading up this event along with Joe West and Carey Walker.
Details will be coming out soon. If anyone would like to be a part
of it, please call Mr. Ragusa at 377-9800.
As always, please feel free to call with any questions you may
have. You can find more specific times for events at our website.

Gratefully yours, Bob Spano, Principal

Florida Tales
by Chester Keene
“Hen
Scratch
Tent
Meeting”
On the left is
an
old
photograph
taken of my
Grandparents
and my Dad
who is on the far left. This was taken in
1926 by an unknown at Hen Scratch, FL.
This was where large tent revivals,
preaching and praising the Lord were
held two weeks, July and Christmas. My
Dad’s family would try to go during the
winter time because there were less
mosquitos and bugs to bother with. If
you went in July it was just the opposite.
The roads were not paved in some places
and some just drove through the woods
on horse and buggy or an old model T
type vehicles.
Hen Scratch was located east of Lake
Placid. Buildings were made of very
rude construction but served its purpose.
It had a palmetto building and some
wood frame buildings and an outhouse.
My dad said they would drive from Ft.
Ogden or where ever the railroad house
they were living in. Granddad worked
for the CH&N Railroad. Known to many
people that worked on it as "Cold
Hungry and Naked". It went from the
Phosphate Docks in Boca Grande to
places north. It was an all day trip but
they took supplies to keep warm and out
of the weather. If the weather was nice
they slept under the stars. Granddad
always took his double barrel 10 ga.
shotgun and shot a turkey or hog or other
food sources on the way there. It was
like a covered dish function. With the
people all present the services started.
Fires and lantern were lit and it
continued on into the night. Granddad
played the fiddle and Granny liked to
sing. This went on for several days and
nights. After the services were finished
everyone packed up and said goodbye
and had hugs for them. Final last look
around and see you back next time were
exchanged.

Recipe for Good Eating
Valentine’s Day Dark Chocolate Bark
Submitted by Patty Huff
Ingredients: 12 oz Dark Chocolate
1 tsp Coconut Oil
1/3 cup Smoked Almonds (chopped)
Sea Salt
In a double boiler, melt 12 oz dark chocolate and coconut oil; place ¼ cup of chopped
almonds on wax paper. Pour melted chocolate over nuts and sprinkle remaining nuts on
top. Sprinkle sea salt on top and put in refrigerator until hardened; break or cut with a sharp
knife into irregular pieces. Eat as a snack or serve as a dessert on top of vanilla ice cream.

HOUSEHOLD TIP
by Marya Repko
I read in the Marco Eagle about a woman who planted rose bushes under her windows to
deter thieves. Here in Florida we should grow prickly pears - if you've ever been stabbed
by one of their sharp thorns, you'll know why.
FLORIDA FLORA
by Patricia Huff
Spanish (or Boxleaf) Stopper
(Eugenia foetida)
While visiting the barrier island of Sanibel last week, my friend Louise from Nashville and
I took a boat trip to Cabbage Key. We had a wonderful lunch at the original home of the
20th-century author Mary Rinehart who purchased the island in 1925 for $2,500. Although I
had been to Cabbage Key (named for its many Cabbage palms), I had never walked the
sandy trails of this old Indian mound. There were signs on the path highlighting the various
trees. The Spanish Stopper grows on Florida’s coastal barrier islands and south to the Keys.
It is a slender tree, with a spread of about 15 feet and a maximum height of 20 feet. The
red-to-black berries are ¼ inch round and provide food to fruit-eating birds. It is called a
“stopper” because of its treatment for diarrhea.
"Everglades Colorful Past and Present"
This beautiful quilt created by Dayna Fendrick of Everglades City is a
tribute to the living legacy of the historical buildings in Everglades
City and surrounding areas, which remain key components of a
thriving community. The circle in the middle is representative of the
Circle in the center of town, and also could be seen as a life preserver,
as a nod to the nautical/fishing nature of the community. Raffle
tickets are available online at www.evergladeshistorical.org.
Proceeds to benefit historic buildings in the area.

EVERGLADES CITY - BEST SMALL TOWNS
The Mullet Rapper recently received notification that EVERGLADES CITY was listed by
Best Choice Reviews as one of 50 Best Small Town Downtowns in America! Quoted:
“Everglades City has an extremely small population of full-time residents. Despite the
small population the city is full of charm and whimsy. It is considered the gateway to the
mangrove estuaries and the thousands of islands of Everglades National Park. The
downtown area has capitalized on the prime location just outside of the National Park
and offers everything from dining to shopping. There are some of the state’s best
destinations for delicious stone crabs…”

Common Loon (Gavia immer)
Other names: great northern diver / Status:
FL=stable, IUCN=LC / Life span: to 19 years /
Length: 26-36 in. (66-93 cm) / Wingspan: 41-52 in.
(105-133 cm) / Weight: 9.1 lb (4.1 kg) / Nests: along the far northern tier
of North America / Found in all coastal Southwest Florida counties in the
fall, winter, and spring on occasion in the back bay but far more common
in the Gulf of Mexico well offshore.
Although a difficult bird to encounter inshore, the common
loon is a frequent sighting in the Gulf of Mexico just off the
islands during the winter months. In the gulf it prefers to inhabit
the coastal waters between 30 and 100 feet in depth, diving for
small fish and crustaceans. When in Florida the loon does not
exhibit the beautiful black and white patterns it displays up north.
Its winter plumage is a dull brown on the back and neck with a
whitish underbelly. In the early morning and sometimes during
the evening the wintering loon will give its distinctive cry in the
gulf, an unmistakable and unforgettable yodel.
BIG CYPRESS CLOSURES
Effective close of business February 15, Turner River canoe
launch will be closed to commercial operations and ranger-led
activities due to low water conditions. This management action is
being implemented to minimize potential impacts to the resource
and ensure a quality visitor experience.
Beginning Monday, February 16, Zone 4 airboat access
within Big Cypress National Preserve will be closed due to low
water conditions. This will begin the 60-day recreational off-road
vehicle (ORV) closure for this management unit within the
Preserve. Pending water levels, this unit will re-open to access by
airboats on Friday, April 17.

SNOOK SEASON RE-OPENS MARCH 1
Snook are one of the many reasons Florida is the Fishing Capital
of the World. As a result, the FWC encourages anglers to use
moderation in taking a snook home, even during the open season.
Anglers may keep one snook per day that is not less than 28 or
more than 33 inches total length. A snook permit is required,
along with a saltwater fishing license, unless the angler is exempt
from the license requirements. Only hook-and-line gear is allowed
when fishing for snook. It is illegal to buy or sell snook. For more
information, visit MyFWC.com/Fishing and click on “Saltwater,”
“Recreational Regulations” and “Snook.”
Star Gazing Parties
March 14 at 7:00 pm and April 11 at 7:30 pm (weather
permitting) Park entrance fees apply ($5 per vehicle).
Enjoy a relaxing night under the stars at Collier-Seminole State
Park with The Everglades Astronomical Society (bring chairs).
For info, call (239) 394-3397.

The loon can dive up to 250 feet deep, aided by a dense bone
structure found mainly on land-based birds such as the ostrich and
emu. To propel itself to such depths its hind legs are placed far
back on its body, making it virtually unable to do more than
waddle awkwardly on land. These two features combine to create
an unusual form of loon mortality. If a loon mistakes a wet
parking lot or stretch of highway for a lake, then it will not be able
to take flight again and unless rescued, will starve to death. Some
birds have been forced down onto small ponds in inclement
weather and because they need long runways to take flight again,
they often succumb to starvation. The loon is also preyed upon by
large sea mammals such as porpoise and sharks and along the
California coast is sometimes taken by sea otters. The chicks are
commonly victims of ravens, minks, snapping turtles, and
northern pike.
Because it relies on small fish, the loon is also vulnerable to
acid rain, which kills the phytoplankton and in turn starves out
lake or pond minnows, causing a collapse in the food chain.
Industrial pollutants, especially oil spills, take large numbers of
loons annually. Lead poisoning from digesting lead sinkers or
buckshot is another cause of mortality, as is entanglement in
fishing nets and discarded fishing line. Despite these obstacles,
the common loon is not endangered. The loon is monogamous and
a solitary nester. Its nests are always located just a few feet from
the water’s edge.

continued from January 30 issue…
Mama was a good student and was
Valedictorian of the graduation class of
1939. For graduation, there was no prom
but instead a Junior-Senior Banquet at the
Everglades Inn put on by her Godfather
Snookie Senghaus. The highlight of the
evening was the flaming Baked Alaska
Snookie made! As an aside, when I found
out Mama was Valedictorian, I asked her
how many were in her class as my class
had over 1000. She responded that there
had been seven – to which I responded that
no wonder she was Valedictorian as she
had no competition! No, she didn’t
appreciate my comment!
Mama went on to study at Florida State
College for Women (now Florida State
University) and later transferred to Duke
University from which she graduated.
When I was a child, Mama would
occasionally take me with her to the
Everglades, pick up Miss Ruth Neal, who
had been one of her teachers and we would
go to Marco Island. At that time Marco
was just sand and sea oats. Mama
maintained a lifelong friendship with Miss
Neal.
Times were not always easy for Mama
growing up in the 1920s-1930s in early
Everglades City. However, she always
spoke fondly and almost reverently about
growing up here and carried her childhood
friendships with her through life. It was
the perfect place for her and Everglades
was always her “home.”
NOTE: Lynn Pierce (granddaughter of F.

MSD FESTIVAL
Charlie Munroe, grandson of Commodore Ralph Munroe of The

are many interesting presentations throughout the festival. Call
Martha at 695-0008 for more information. The schedule of events is
available at the Museum of the Everglades.

New Stars at Smallwood Music Fest
Two kids, aged 16 and 17, stole the show at the Smallwood
Music Festival on January 31 at the Rod & Gun Club. The
Anderson Brothers from Myakka had such great rapport with
audience and, obviously, with each other as they played,
stomped, encouraged audience participation, and generally
proved themselves professional musicians at such a young age. And, of course, their
enthusiasm was contagious as they received thunderous applause for encore after encore.
The event was sponsored by the Everglades Society for Historic Preservation.

TAXING THINGS
by Mike, The Tax Guy
IRS Tips to Help You Choose
a Tax Preparer
Many people pay to have their taxes
prepared; be careful when you pick a
preparer. You are legally responsible for
all the information on the tax return even
if someone else prepares it.
1.
Check
the
preparer’s
qualifications.
All paid tax
preparers are required to have a
Preparer Tax Identification Number
or PTIN.
2.
Ask about fees.
Avoid
preparers who base their fee on a
percentage of your refund or those
who say they can get larger refunds
than others can. Make sure any
refund due is sent to you or
deposited into your bank account.
3.
e-file your return. Preparers
who prepare more than 10 returns
must e-file their clients’ returns.
4.
Make sure the preparer is
available. Ensure that you can
contact the tax preparer after you
file your return if questions come
up about your tax return at a later
time.
5.
Provide tax records.
A
preparer will ask to see your
records and receipts and ask you
questions to report your total
income and the tax benefits you’re
entitled to claim.
6.
Never sign a blank tax
return. Do not use a tax preparer
who asks you to sign a blank tax
form.
7.
Review your return before
signing.
Make sure you’re
comfortable with the information
on the return before you sign it.
8.
9.
Preparers must sign and
include
their
PTIN.
Paid
preparers must sign returns and
include their PTIN as required by
law and must also give you a copy
of the return.
Report abusive tax preparers
to the IRS. Report suspected tax
fraud to the IRS. File Form 14157,
and Form 14157-A, You can
download and print these forms on

From Savannah’s Eyes
Standing on the court, anticipation in everyone’s eyes, waiting for the
last name to be called. “And now to be his Queen… Savannah Oglesby!”
The crowd goes wild as I walk to the returning Queen Kristin McMillin,
tears rolling down my face as I’ve waited for this moment for 15 years. I
give her a hug as she places the Homecoming Queen sash over my
shoulder and puts a giant crown upon my head. I hug the principal before
I join the King Dalton Patt. We walk up and down the court both of us
beaming with excitement as we look at the crowd. We then head up the stairs to the King
and Queen chairs. As I sit down and look at the crowd, I look to my left and see my family
sitting, some of them crying,
others videotaping and flashing
cameras like crazy. When all
the other court pairs arrived
onstage with us and sat down,
we took one last look at the
crowd as Mr. Major (our
announcer) said “Ladies and
Gentlemen, I present to you the Homecoming Court
representatives for 2015.” The crowd fills with claps and
cheers that echoes throughout the gym. Then the curtains
slowly close and when they’re finally closed shut, all the
smiles and perfect posture turned into groaning and
flinging off shoes, as the boys on the basketball team
raced down the back stairs to go get ready for the game.
The girls on the other hand went down the other side
barefoot and holding their tulle and satin dresses so they
don’t get stepped on. I stayed up on stage as people came pouring in to take pictures. I’m
serious I’ve never smiled so much in my life! That night, January 30, 2015, was one of the
best days ever in my entire life. I’ve always dreamed about winning Queen ever since I was
a little girl watching the seniors get crowned every year, and finally it was my turn. Also,
not to mention getting crowned by my best friend Kristin McMillin (returning Queen)
topped it all off definitely. Thanks to all who voted for me and let me experience this
magical night filled with laughter and happy tears!
Of course, you can’t have Homecoming without the big game! We won against Barron
Collier High School and then after the game it was time to party at the dance! I had a blast
dancing the night away with all of my friends for the last time. The decorations were
awesome as there were balloons everywhere and the dance floor was lit up by a black light.
Our amazing DJ Brittany Potter got everyone out on the dance floor to basically every song
as she played the best tunes. And the food (one of my favorite things ever) was delicious! I
probably ate a whole pizza that night by myself. Thanks to our Principal Spano, Vice
Principal Ragusa, Casey, and Angela for making this dance possible! But all in all it was
definitely one of the best nights of my life and I can’t wait to see what’s next in store for
me.
Love from your 2015 Homecoming Queen, Savannah
Savannah Oglesby is 17 years old and a senior at Everglades-City School.
