Interested in the process of writing and publishing? Come to one or all of this
series of free programs sponsored by several local libraries. Events will take place
throughout the month of March.
The Warrenville Public Library and Wheaton Public Library will co-sponsor Libby
Fischer Hellmann – “Self-Publishing: Doing it by the Book?” on Tuesday, March
10, 7 p.m. at the Wheaton Public Library. Thriller author Libby Fischer Hellmann
explains her move to self-publishing and discusses the differences, benefits,
drawbacks and costs of doing it yourself rather than being traditionally published.
Copies of her book will be available for purchase and signing. Hellmann’s books
are available for check-out at the Library. Registration is required. To register for this

Celebrate National Library Week April 12 – 18
First celebrated in 1958, National Library Week is a time to celebrate the
contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library
use and support. The Library offers unlimited access to resources that change
people’s lives every day, including language learning resources, public computer
access, databases for job searches and homework help. If you are pursuing a
dream or a goal, the library is the place to help you launch your mission. All you
have to do is ask! From March 23 through April 3, visit the Information Desk and
tell us what your mission in life is, big or small, for a chance to win a prize. During
National Library Week, we will display your responses and randomly select the winners. Multiple responses are
welcome; however, only one form will count towards the prize drawing. Only Warrenville Library cardholders are
eligible for prizes.

Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign
designed to help consumers better manage their
personal finances. This is achieved through the
collaboration and coordinated effort of organizations
across the country including businesses, financial
institutions, schools, libraries, not-for-profits,
government agencies and the media. These groups come together once a year to stress the importance of
financial literacy, inform consumers about where they can get help and provide free educational seminars and
activities throughout the week. Programming is offered to all income levels and demographics and covers all
facets of personal finance from establishing a budget to first time home buying to estate planning. The effort
was created by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2002.
Many events will be taking place at local libraries. All events are free and open to the public. Warrenville Public
Library will host “Cable No More” on Thursday, April 23, 7 p.m. Say goodbye to your cable bill forever! Learn
about a variety of devices and services that offer streaming movies and television, including ones you can check

some of the ways in which things become very different
at the smallest scales of matter. Matter of all kinds
interacts to form bound systems. Galaxies bound by
gravity, atoms bound by electromagnetism and nuclei bound

force share many common features. But at the very smallest scales, where
quarks come together to form protons and neutrons, things become
curiouser and curiouser. Even though protons and neutrons are the basic
building blocks of our world, the way they are formed seems like something
from beyond the looking glass.

Reducing Stress Through Meditation *

The scientific community has recently been exploring the use of meditation
as a healing practice. Join Michael Ribet, who has been meditating for
over 40 years, as he discusses the extraordinary effect of meditation to
reduce stress-related responses, improve concentration, enhance clarity of
thought and mental equilibrium. He will also present a simple, yet powerful
meditation technique that can enrich one’s life personally, professionally
and spiritually.

Thursday, April 16, 7 p.m.
American aviator Amelia Earhart’s courageous exploits
and spirited personality made her an international
celebrity. Her dazzling achievements include becoming
the first woman to cross the Atlantic ocean by airplane
(1928) and the first woman to fly solo across the
Atlantic (1932). She set numerous speed and altitude records
cords before
disappearing mysteriously in 1937 during an attempted around-the-world
flight. This program reviews her upbringing, the records she broke and her
tireless work to promote opportunities for women.

Growing and Cooking with Herbs *

Fresh herbs naturally enhance the flavor of foods and help us lead a
healthier lifestyle. Joannie Rocchi will educate and inform us about growing
our own kitchen garden for herbs and being inspired to use them in our
recipes. The Growing Place has over 120 varieties of herbs, many of which
she will bring for participants to touch and smell.

Join us as we welcome back our favorite celebrity chef, Dave Esau. Dave
is always highly entertaining as he educates his audience on nutrition
and food preparation. He will give a demonstration on preparing easy
and delicious picnic foods as summer approaches. Dishes to be prepared
are Bow-Tie Pasta with Grilled Veggies, Waldorf Salad and Strawberry Trifle.

Astronomy Using Your Eyeballs *

So much observation of our daytime and nighttime skies can be done
without a telescope. Michelle Nichols from the Adler Planetarium will
present an overview of celestial observations you can do with just your
eyes, including Moon phases, eclipses, planets, stars and much more in a
session suited to an astronomy novice.
Glaciers to Wildflowers: How Illinois’ Living
Landscapes Came to Be *
Tuesday, June 2, 7 p.m.
We are pleased to welcome back Raymond Wiggers as he relates the
fascinating origins of our state’s living landscape, including its landforms,
soils, forests, prairies, peatlands and savannas. He will show how Illinois’
diverse array of plant species, habitats and scenic locales is the product of
vast geologic forces operating over millions of years. He will place special
emphasis on how our state’s scenery and ecosystems have experienced
dramatic changes since the waning of the latest Ice Age glacier. This talk
is of special significance for conservationists, environmental educators,
horticulturists and all interested persons who seek a better understanding
of the environment in which they live.

Pre-loaded Kindles
Feature Popular Titles
Warrenville Library cardholders can check out a Kindle e-reader
that is preloaded with popular titles. Each Kindle (or Kindle Fire)
has a selection that appeals to a specific audience. Kindles
check out for two weeks. They can be renewed if no other patrons
are waiting. These Kindles provide an opportunity for patrons to
try an e-reader before purchasing one.

Stephanie Plum and Whiskey Creek series among others.
Digitize Your Slides and Film Negatives
The portable Wolverine Slide/Film Converter transfers the images from
slides and negatives to a memory card or directly to a Windows or
Mac computer via USB. (For your convenience, 16GB memory cards
are available for purchase at the Information Desk.) Warrenville Library
cardholders may check out a converter for two weeks, or use one in
the Library on a first-come, first-served basis. If your converted images
need improvement, advanced scanning options and editing software are
available at the computer-based Scanning Station. To get started, watch
the Slide Converter’s video tutorial on our catalog website, or schedule
one-on-one assistance through our Book a Librarian program by calling
630/393-1171 x100.

and children’s programs. The Roku player
connects via HDMI or composite video to
TVs and other displays including full size or pico
projectors. Warrenville cardholders may check out a Roku for two weeks.
Wireless internet access is required; remote control batteries are not
included.

Teen Tech Week is the perfect time to sample the Library’s mobile devices
and technology. Make a short film using our Flip video camera and green
screen then edit your footage on a Library computer. Convert family
photographs, negatives and slides into electronic files then use them to
create a video history for your family archives. Take an online course to
learn about game design, web design or audio and video editing. These
resources are available to Warrenville Library cardholders.

Not sure what to do with your old smartphone, tablet or
e-reader? Consider donating your gently used device to the
Library. Some devices will be loaded with digital content
and put into circulation, while others will be used in Library
programs. Any devices not used directly by the Library will
be passed on to other local non-profits or safely recycled.
Donations are accepted at our Information Desk with the
completion of our Mobile Device Donation form, which also
serves as a receipt for tax purposes. Device size and type
restrictions apply; consult our staff for details or visit our
