Semashkewich was elected to his first term back in September 2013 to represent the areas to the west of Athabasca as well as the Smith region. He handed in his resignation to the board at their Feb. 5 meeting in Smoky Lake. “Part of the reason is, when looking at my business life and other commitments, I simply wasn’t able to commit the time I felt was needed to be able to do the job as a trustee,” he explained. “When I first decided to take on this role, I thought it would be more of a governance role.” Instead, Semashkewich stated he found the position involved a lot of time spent focusing on functions that he thought would be best handled by those hired by the school division. “I didn’t sign up to do the job that the board hired administrative people to do,” he said. “I don’t know why we were doing what the superintendent is supposed to do. I support the superintendent, the board and the education system and I wanted to do a good job for the public. I feel good about the people that are in place, it’s just the process I couldn’t handle.” Semashkewich added he felt his plate was already too full with all of his other commitments and therefore unable to devote even more time to the various meetings, committees, workshops and other things that entail being a trustee. With nearly two and a half years left until the next general election, the remaining trustees voted to hold a by-election. Nominations will be taken until Mar. 10 with an election date of Apr. 7, should one be necessary. Barrhead Big dreams Barrhead Composite High School students will be showing off their talents during the Small Town, Big Dreams talent show on Thursday, Feb. 19. The event was inspired by a similar event hosted by R.F. Staples in Westlock, with band instructor Kerry-Lee Kostiw taking the reins for BCHS. The talent show is hosted as a way of showcasing the various talents the students at the school possess. “We have some incredibly talented kids here at the school, but the students often don’t have an outlet to show off that talent. That is why I created this show three years ago,” Kostiw said. Staff are also invited and encouraged to participate in the talent show. Kostiw said that teachers often don’t realize what kind of abilities their students have outside the classroom. “If you are a math teacher, you would never know the student sitting in the first row, is an amazing singer,” she said. Although the talent show is open to any style of entertainment from musicians, dancers, comedians, she said all the performers have to be part of the BCHS community. “Sometimes we have a staff member or a family member of a student perform, but really it is about the students.” Small Town, Big Dreams starts at 7 p.m. in the BCHS Drama Theatre. Admission is $2 and everyone is invited. Lac La Biche Ladies’ Night The Kinettes Club of Lac La Biche is hosting a Ladies’ Night Out on Friday, Feb. 21. Beginning at 7 p.m. at the Lac La Biche Kinsmen Hall, the event will include games, prizes, raffles and appetizers. The organizers say it’s an opportunity for the women in the community to mingle, get to know one another and bond. There will be a cash bar, so no minors will be allowed in. Tickets cost $20 each, and all of the proceeds will go to support cystic fibrosis research. For more information or to reserve tickets, contact Colleen at 780-276-0119 or Kelsey at 780-5205014. The Kinsmen Hall is located on 102 Avenue in the hamlet of Lac La Biche. Westlock Petition stalls A petition circulated by former Westlock County Reeve Ken Mead has failed to get the number of signatories required to trigger an investigation by the provincial government. “I don’t have the numbers but with all the things that are happening with the county, I feel that the minister will take into consideration lots of things and hopefully do something about it,” Mead said. One third of the county’s eligible voters, or about 1,600 people, were required to sign the petition and cause an investigation by Alberta Municipal Affairs. “The response to the petition has been 100 per cent,” Mead said. “With the signatures we’ve got, it’s just over 1,000 so far and we needed 1,600, but we have had 10 people who have refused to sign it because they support the municipality.” Mead has a number grievances with the current county council and administration and has been seeking signatures for the petition since November last year. Vimy DunRobin 4-H Club news jessalyn nelson & Haley Mae Provencal News or T&C staff In September 2014, Vimy DunRobin 4-H Multi Club held their information meeting. The projects the club has going this year are crafts, multi-species judging and goats. Crafts started off with Halloween-themed activities. We made milk jug jack-o-lanterns, felt animal pumpkins and sock owls. During our second craft meeting, we made a variety of Christmas presents for our teachers. For our third meeting, we went on a field trip to the Glazing Pot Studio in St. Albert, where we completed a glass fusion project. The goat projects kicked off with their weigh in day. They went on a field trip to a feedlot and are busy preparing their achievement day and sale. Some of the extra club events that our members have participated in this year are volunteering at the Vimy Lions Fall Supper, attending 4-H night at the Edmonton Oil Kings game and an afternoon of sledding for the club Christmas party. For a community-focused event, our club prepared Valentine’s Day cards for the residents of the Smithfield Lodge. We delivered them and spent time visiting with the residents and talking to them about the projects that we do in 4-H. Our club held its club presentations competition on Feb. 8. First place for the senior presentation went to Destyny Creighton and Emily Oloske with “Watch Your Back.” First place in the intermediate presentation went to Haley Mae Provencal and Jessalyn Nelson with “Wax Wall Creations.” First place junior presentation went to Emily Moylan with Tape Trees, and Second place Junior Presentation went to Eliza Sharpe with Baking Brownies 101. We wish everyone luck when they present at the district level completion.
