Samantha Wersal –Carrillo & Sheila Webb School Social Workers 612-668-1554 Hey, Hey, Hey Don’t Forget to Read Every Day Fuel Up to Play 60 Fuel Up to Play 60 is a program founded by the National Dairy Council and NFL, in collaboration with USDA, that empowers students to take charge in making small, everyday changes at school. Our students earned a visit from Viktor the Viking for choosing good-for-you foods and getting active for at least 60 minutes every day. We want kids to make a difference not only in their lives, but also their community. Hi-5 We did our winter theme! Next up is we are going on a safari and studying wild animals and zoo animals. The learning targets that we work on are: *I can use new words. *I can work by myself and with others. *I can ask for help when I need it. *I can be a friend. *I can let others know how I am feeling. *I can follow rules and directions. *I can use classroom materials. *I can learn. *I can control my body. We will continue to work on these learning targets next month as we learn about the Five Senses and their importance that they make us aware of our surroundings. Keep reading everyday and counting everyday with your child! Mrs. Bradshaw Autism Hello Pillsbury Families! We have been busy this winter as our students continue to make progress on their goals! For our December field trip we visited the 8th floor Macy’s display “A Day in the Life of an Elf”. This included a walk through the elves’ bunkroom, kitchen, school, toy factory, and the mailroom! We ended the filed trip with lunch at Mc Donald’s which is always a favorite! We will keep you updated about spring field trips as they come up. Ms. Kelly, Ms. Kathryn, and Ms. Jennie 3 Kindergarten Korner Happy 2015! Here are some highlights to start the New Year! *In reading we have been enjoying the winter season with stories about cold weather, snowmen, and artic animals. Continue reading at home! You are your child’s first teacherJ! *In math we learned many new games and have been moving Jiji through the levels of ST Math on the iPads. Numbers are all around us- point out numbers in your home and count often! *At home ask your child about the difference between ‘needs’ and ‘wants’. We just finished our social studies unit on the topic. *The first semester assessments have been completed and report cards are coming home soon. We are very pleased with how much the children have learned during the first half of kindergarten! *Winter will be here for a while so please send your child with outdoor gear daily- boots, mittens, and hats are essential! *The first weeks back we reviewed the Pillsbury Rules: Be Respectful - Be Responsible - Be Safe When these rules are followed, we have a lot of fun learning. Team up with us by reviewing these expectations at home. THANKS! The Kindergarten Team Ms. Baker, Mrs. Pierskalla, Mrs. Rabe, Mrs. Stoner First Grade The first graders are very excited to start their Enrichment Clubs this winter! The three clubs are Kids Can Cook Club, Creativity Club and Sports and Games Club. The Enrichment clubs meet for the last 45 minutes of school on Wednesdays. In the clubs they get a chance to learn with their peers from all four first grade classrooms. In reading, we have started reading poetry. In math, the students are starting to learn subtraction. In social studies, the students are learning about the costs and benefits of making decisions. They are becoming very good economists. Important Reminder: First graders need ten hours of sleep to be well rested for their day of learning! The first grade teachers are very excited to see all of your families at conferences in February! Thank you for helping the students with their learning at home! Mr. Lyrek, Mr. Guiang, Ms. Ridge, Ms. Wettstaedt, and Ms. Peterson News from 2 nd grade: The second grade team has had a busy month! We went on a fantastic field trip to The Works Museum in January. Lots of engineering and science activities to look at and touch! We will be going to the Mill City Museum on Friday, March 13th. That is another wonderful, interactive place to go. We finished our Reading and Math Winter MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) tests a couple of weeks ago. We were very proud of the gains made by all of our students. To celebrate, we are having an “Up” party and watching the movie “Up” on February 20th. With the warmer temperatures we’ve been having this month, it is easy to forget that ii is still winter. We do go outside for recess every day that the temperature is above zero, so please remember to send boots, mittens or gloves, hats, scarves, snow pants and a warm coat with your child every day. As always, thank you for your continued support! Ms. Parker, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Rodriguez and Mr. Lurvey, Second Grade teachers 4 Third Grade Right now, the third grades are working on Fractions in math using the Rational Number Project. It's a great way for kids to learn and understand more about fractions. We've been comparing, ordering, creating and adding fractions. In reading, we've been reading nonfiction books in our reading groups, talking about text structures and other parts of non-fiction books. Soon we will be working on creating non-fiction reports on a wide variety of subjects in writing. In science, we are investigating Matter and Energy. We've been talking about energy sources, converting energy, energy on the move and how to conserve energy. We have plenty of hands on experiment for the kids to do and learn as we explore energy and matter! All third graders should be reading at a level N this fall and a level P by this spring. The Third Grade Team. Michelle Bové, Bryan Anderson, Bob Lundquist and David Nestrud. Online Homework and Help Does your child need more homework help? Thank you to all of the volunteers and parents! It was a fantastic day at the World Class First Lego League event for all of the Pillsbury students to apply their engineering skills. We should be extremely proud of Jasmine, Jessica, Crystal and Jennifer (4th grade GEMS). They were determined to complete their programming task. They were intimidated by the robotic programming at the beginning stages, yet as the days came closer to the First Lego League event they learned their basic programming skills. At the event they were the first to launch the soccer ball mission. Their unique robot design was impeccable. For the robotic event their programming skills were put to test in four performances. At each event they had to either work on the same mission 8 or add others. It was amazing for them. The “Tiger” team presentation addressed bullying. They designed a bullying prototype watch. The “Kuwaii Health” team designed a diabetic shoe that would monitor and help diabetes patients. Their ideas should be explored more. With twenty-two girls enrolled and seventeen present that day, the tournament was great. Every year brings different talent to this event. There were past Pillsbury GEMS girls enrolled in GEMS Northeast Middle School participating too. Please continue to encourage girls to participate in the GEMS Afterschool program. There have been past girls who confronted Mrs. Singh about their career goals that they have pursued. This elementary GEMS program does encourage them to pursue challenging careers. Congratulations to Mr. Lundquist’s GISE on receiving an award for programming spirit. Junior GEMS and GISE, congratulations on your participation in the Think Tank Challenge. Each team had to teach about a learning tool. They had to show how their motorized Lego model worked with a show me poster. Pillsbury Coaches are gearing up our 1st – 3rd graders for the 4th and 5th grade GEMS and GISE. As GEMS and GISE coaches we realize the level of progress each student has made. As team members we explored a subject through building and research, designed and built a model, and learned how to work together successfully. It’s important to celebrate what we have done together. We don’t realize it but we have influenced the lives of these children and expanded their horizons! Congratulations, on a job well done no matter what challenges we were faced with! Experts agree that children between 5 – 12 years old need about 10-11 hours of sleep every night. For an early start school like Pillsbury, it means most of our students should be heading for bed by 7 - 8 pm. When children don’t get enough sleep, it can result in behavior problems, impaired learning and school performance, mood and emotion problems, and contribute to obesity and other health problems. Screen Time School-aged children are becoming more interested in TV, computers, the media and Internet as well as caffeine products – all of which can lead to difficulty falling asleep, nightmares and disruptions to their sleep. In particular, watching TV close to bedtime has been associated with bedtime resistance (not wanting to go to bed), difficulty falling asleep, anxiety around sleep and sleeping fewer hours. Sleep Tips for School-aged Children • Teach school-aged children about healthy sleep habits. • Emphasize the need for regular and consistent sleep schedule and bedtime routine (even on weekends). • Make child's bedroom conducive to sleep – dark, cool and quiet. • Keep TV and computers out of the bedroom. • Avoid caffeine. Influenza The influenza season is upon us. Influenza symptoms come on quickly in the form of fever, dry cough, sore throat, headache, extreme tiredness, stuffed-up nose, and body aches. These symptoms can be severe and put you in bed for several days. Please help yourselves and your family to stay healthy: • Keep your child home from school or daycare if they are ill. Stay home yourself if you are ill. • Get vaccinated – it is not too late to get a flu shot • As much as possible, stay away from others who are sick with a flu-like illness • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or cough or sneeze into your sleeve. Teach your children to do the same. • Clean your hands often – with soap and water (best) or a hand sanitizer (if soap and water not available). • If you have a baby at home, don't expose infants unnecessarily to large crowds when influenza is in your community. Avoid close contact between the baby and family members who may be sick. • Do not share drinking cups and straws. • Frequently clean commonly touched surfaces (door knobs, refrigerator handles, phones, water faucets). • Do not smoke around children. If you are not sure if your child is too sick to be at school, follow these general guidelines. A student should stay home: • • • • • If he/she has had an oral temperature of 100 degrees or higher in the past 24 hours. If he/she has vomited 2 or more times in the past 24 hours. If he/she has diarrhea (an increased number of stools compared to normal or has stools that are loose) and he/she needs to use the bathroom frequently. If he/she has any rash for which the cause is unknown. Check with your doctor before sending them to school. If he/she has an illness that prevents him/her from participating in routine activities. Call the school EVERY DAY that your child is not at school (668-1538). Thanks for your help in keeping our school community healthy and ready to learn! 10
