Written by an expert in the field, this book covers the principles, architectures,
applications, specifications and characterizations of radio receivers In this book, the
author introduces the reader to the basic principles and theories of present-day
communications receiver technology. The first section of the book presents realization
concepts at the system level, taking into consideration the various types of users. Details
of the circuitry are described providing the reader with an understanding of fully digitized
radio receivers, offering an insight into the state-of-the-art.
The remaining sections address radio receivers, particularly as two-port devices.
Furthermore, the author outlines the fields of applications (with sample calculations and
with reference to practical work) and their features and considers also the specialty of
high-quality radio receivers. As can be seen from the multitude of terrestrial applications
described in Part II, they are typically used for radio surveillance, signal intelligence,
modern radio bearing and at the classical radio services.
Parts III and IV describe the entire range of parameters that are useful for the
characterization of these receivers. The description starts from the physical effect, or the
explanation of the individual parameter, and then proceeds to the measuring technique
for determining the parameters, highlighting problems, followed by explanatory notes with
applicatory relevance. The measuring procedures described are the result of experiences
gained in extended laboratory work and practical testing.

This book examines signal processing techniques for cognitive radios. The book is
divided into three parts:
Part I, is an introduction to cognitive radios and presents a history of the cognitive radio
(CR), and introduce their architecture, functionalities, ideal aspects, hardware platforms,
and state-of-the-art developments. Dr.Jayaweera also introduces the specific type of CR
that has gained the most research attention in recent years: the CR for Dynamic
Spectrum Access (DSA). Part II of the book, Theoretical Foundations, guides the reader
from classical to modern theories on statistical signal processing and inference. The
author addresses detection and estimation theory, power spectrum estimation,
classification, adaptive algorithms (machine learning), and inference and decision
processes.
Applications to the signal processing, inference and learning problems encountered in
cognitive radios are interspersed throughout with concrete and accessible examples. Part
III of the book, Signal Processing in Radios, identifies the key signal processing,
inference, and learning tasks to be performed by wideband autonomous cognitive radios.
The author provides signal processing solutions to each task by relating the tasks to
materials covered in Part II.
Specialized chapters then discuss specific signal processing algorithms required for DSA
and DSS cognitive radios.

The United States ushered in a new era of small-scale broadcasting in 2000 when it
began issuing low-power FM (LPFM) licenses for noncommercial radio stations around
the country. Over the next decade, several hundred of these newly created lowwattage stations took to the airwaves. In Low Power to the People, Christina DunbarHester describes the practices of an activist organization focused on LPFM during this
era. Despite its origins as a pirate broadcasting collective, the group eventually shifted
toward building and expanding regulatory access to new, licensed stations. These
radio activists consciously cast radio as an alternative to digital utopianism, promoting
an understanding of electronic media that emphasizes the local community rather than
a global audience of Internet users. Dunbar-Hester focuses on how these radio
activists impute emancipatory politics to the "old" medium of radio technology by
promoting the idea that "microradio" broadcasting holds the potential to empower
ordinary people at the local community level.
The group's methods combine political advocacy with a rare commitment to hands-on
technical work with radio hardware, although the activists' hands-on, inclusive ethos
was hampered by persistent issues of race, class, and gender. Dunbar-Hester's study
of activism around an "old" medium offers broader lessons about how political beliefs
are expressed through engagement with specific technologies.
This book maps, describes and further explores all contemporary forms of interaction
between radio and its public, with a specific focus on those forms of content co-creation
that link producers and listeners. Each essay will analyze one or more case studies,
piecing together a map of emerging co-creation practices in contemporary radio.
Contributors describe the rise of a new class of radio listeners: the networked ones.
Networked audiences are made up of listeners that are not only able to produce written
and audio content for radio and co-create along with the radio producers (even
definitively bypassing the central hub of the radio station, by making podcasts), but that
also produce social data, calling for an alternative rating system, which is less focused on
attention and more on other sources, such as engagement, sentiment, affection,
reputation, and influence. What are the economic and political consequences of this
paradigm shift? How are radio audiences perceived by radio producers in this new
radioscape? What's the true value of radio audiences in this new frame? How do radio
audiences take part in the radio flow in this age?Are audiences' interactions and cocreations overrated or underrated by radio producers? To what extent listeners'
generated content can be considered a form of participation or "free labour" exploitation?
What's the role of community radio in this new context? These are some of the many
issues that this book aims to explore.

With 380 brilliant photos and engaging text, this book presents some 300 of the rarest
and most beautiful radios ever made for home or workplace. The advent of the small,
mantle or tabletop radio in 1930 gave a huge impetus to the spread of radio, not only
allowing multiple sets in the home, but changing the listener from the family to the
individual. This book highlights a small subset of tube (valve) radios that incorporated
new styling, materials, and approaches to consumer marketing in the 1930s and
1940s.
A comprehensive evaluation of Fi-Wi, enabling readers to design links using channel
estimation and equalization algorithms This book provides a detailed study of radio over
fiber (ROF) based wireless communication systems, otherwise called fiber wireless (FiWi) systems. This is an emerging hot topic where the abundant bandwidth of optical fiber
is directly combined with the flexibility and mobility of wireless networks to provide
broadband connectivity. Its application is increasing because of the growing demand for
broadband wireless services.
Until now they have been underrated by many radio enthusiasts, and largely
unrecognized in the world of Art Deco and Industrial Design. The radios of 35 industrial
designers, including the luminaries of streamlining in the USA and UK (Loewy, Bel
Geddes, Teague, Van Doren, Vassos, Coates, and Chermayeff) are identified and
examples from 15 countries are stunningly displayed.
In such a system the transmission of the radio signals over a fiber is an important task.
This book provides substantial material on the radio over fiber part of the complete fiberwireless system, including new research results on the compensation methods. The early
chapters provide fundamental knowledge required for a non-expert engineering
professional as well as senior/graduate level students to learn this topic from scratch.
The latter part of the book covers advanced topics useful for researchers and senior
students. Therefore, this book provides a comprehensive understanding of the system for
readers who will gain enough knowledge to design Fi-Wi links of their own by learning
how to develop Fi-Wi channel estimation and equalization algorithms. This concept is
completely novel in current literature and has been patented by the author.

This book is intended for readers who already have knowledge of devices and circuits
for radio-frequency (RF) and microwave communication and are ready to study the
systems engineering-level aspects of modern radio communications systems. The
authors provide a general overview of radio systems with their components, focusing
on the analog parts of the system and their non-idealities. Based on the physical
functionality of the various building blocks of a modern radio system, block parameters
are derived, which allows the examination of their influence on the overall system
performance.
The discussion is complemented by tutorial exercises based on the Agilent SystemVue
electronic system-level (ESL) design software. With these tutorials, readers gain
practical experience with realistic design examples of radio transmission systems for
communications and radar sensing. The tutorials cover state-of-the-art system
standards and applications and consider the characteristics of typical radio-frequency
hardware components.
For all tutorials, a comprehensive description of the tasks, including some hints to the
solutions, is provided. The readers are then able to perform these tasks independently.
A complete set of simulation models and solutions to the tutorial exercises is given.
Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit
Design for Cognitive Radio Systems
With an emphasis on antennas and propagation, Radio Propagation and Adaptive
Antennas investigates every aspect of wireless communication network design and
function. The book delves into, among other applicable radio propagation topics,
multipath phenomena, slow and fast fading, free-space propagation, and obstructed
reflection and diffraction. Pertinent applications and relatable examples make this the
essential modern reference for engineering practitioners and students in wireless
communication systems.

This book fills an information gap on cognitive radios, since the discussion focuses on
the implementation issues that are unique to cognitive radios and how to solve them at
both the architecture and circuit levels. This is the first book to describe in detail
cognitive radio systems, as well as the circuit implementation and architectures
required to implement such systems. Throughout the book, requirements and
constraints imposed by cognitive radio systems are emphasized when discussing the
circuit implementation details.
This is a valuable reference for anybody with background in analog and radio
frequency (RF) integrated circuit design, needing to learn more about integrated
circuits requirements and implementation for cognitive radio systems.
In Writing Music for Commercials: Television, Radio, and New Media, professor,
composer, arranger, and producer Michael Zager describes the process of composing
and arranging music specifically for commercials across the growing variety of media
formats. Writing music for commercials requires composers not only learn the craft of
writing short-form compositions that can stand on their own, but also understand the
advertising business. In this third edition of his original Writing Music for Television and
Radio Commericals, Zager walks starting composers through the business and art of
writing music that aims for a product's target audience and, when done well, hits its mark.
Chapter by chapter, Zager covers a broad array of topics: how to approach and analyze
commercials from a specifically musical perspective, the range of compositional
techniques for underscoring and composing jingles, the standard expectations and
techniques for arranging and orchestration, and finally the composing of music for radio
commercials, corporate videos, infomercials, theatrical trailers, video games, Internet
commercials, websites, and web series (webisodes). This third edition has been updated
to include more in-depth analysis of the changing landscape of music writing for modern
media, with critical information on composing not only for the Web but for mobile
applications, from video-driven advertising in online newspapers to electronic greeting
cards. Zager also includes new interviews with industry professionals, updated business
information, the latest sound design concepts, and much more.
