MERCK FELLOWSHIP FOR GLOBAL HEALTH (RTC FELLOWS) NGO Overview ABOUT THE MERCK FELLOWSHIP FOR GLOBAL HEALTH What: A three-month corporate pro bono program designed to leverage the skills and talents of Merck and MSD employees. How: Pairs the best minds from Merck with partner organizations for meaningful and systematic improvements in health service delivery for people in greatest need. 5 cohorts / 70 Fellows / 24 NGO partners Goals: • Strengthens the capacity and reach of non-profit organizations with technical and human capital support • Provides rich professional development experiences for Merck employees, requiring an embedded 3-month assignment with a non-profit partner TARGET PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS • Partner organizations are chosen based on opportunities for capacity building and shared learning • Have identified a critical, unmet need that can be shaped into a Scope of Work • Priority will be given to Merck for Mothers partner organizations, maternal health organizations and NGOs who seek to leverage Merck’s core competencies such as scientific R&D and supply chain WHO ARE RTC FELLOWS? • • • Cross-functional teams of high performing Merck employees Globally diverse Typically have 10 years of experience working with Merck Sample skill sets include: • Organizational Development • Marketing & Communications • Human Resources • Finance • Supply Chain and Procurement • • • • • • Emerging leaders with strong teamwork skills Enthusiastic and motivated about the opportunity Business Development Strategic Planning Clinical Research Medicinal Chemistry FELLOWS’ RESPONSIBILITIES • Devote two days to preparatory work during on-boarding session (New Jersey, USA) • Dedicate to serve full-time on assignment for three months • Commit to institutional learning and sustaining impact post-field assignment over a six-month period MERCK’S RESPONSIBILITIES Merck’s Office of Corporate Responsibility along with its vendors: • Manage partner organization relationship • Handle Merck Fellow and local partner selection processes • Manage grants and per diems • Handle in-country logistics HOST ORGANIZATION RESPONSIBILITIES • Provide access to key people and information within the organization necessary for the assignment to be a success • Charged with organizing in- • Appoint a key person to work with the Fellows • Proficient in written and spoken English country travel, accommodation, office space and internet access • Certain standards of safety, convenience and cleanliness should be met • Housing should be identified upon SOW submission Expenses Partnership Logistics Transparency • Willingness and ability to travel to New Jersey for on-boarding session • Grant will cover any expenses incurred by the host organization while fielding the Fellow(s). • Expenses include housing, transportation, incountry travel, mobile phones and service, etc. PAST PROJECTS STRATEGIC PLANNING Centre for Development and Population Activities New Delhi, India Scopes of Work: 1 Fellow: • Defined/revised and developed a short and a long term strategic plan highlighting… • Programmatic objectives, plans and positioning in India’s development sector 2 Fellows: • 3-year communications plan to support brand building and fundraising PROGRAM FOR EFFECTIVE HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEM Possible Rural Himalayas, Nepal Scope of Work: 3 Fellows: • Designed an electronic inventory system enabling Possible’s staff to track the movement of medicines and supplies throughout the hospital • Developed a consistent naming system for medicines for easy identification by staff • Conducted a benchmarking survey of best practices in Nepalese supply chain through national interviews with suppliers and manufacturers, and shared the results with Possible management team. RESEARCH CAPACITY BUILDING FOR KEY BIOMEDICAL LABS IN AFRICA Bio Ventures for Global Health Seattle, Washington Scope of Work: 2 Fellows: • Examined the strengths and weaknesses of a few key African research institutions working in the field of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) • Assessed the current research occurring within the labs and throughout the institution, and identify areas of strengths and gaps in capabilities • Shared their knowledge through presenting seminars that describe key aspects of pharmaceutical discovery, development, and/or manufacturing.
