Recognition of Graduates
During the Commencement Service, we recognise those who have graduated from their academic
programs with the CSU School of Theology during the previous year. Some graduates will have attended
the School of Theology Graduation Ceremony in Canberra or Sydney. The Academic Dean, the Rev’d Dr
Gregory Jenks, will acknowledge the graduating cohort with a brief statement. He will then present
graduates to the Archbishop.

God of all truth,
teach us to love you with heart and mind.
Bless our schools, colleges and universities,
especially Charles Sturt University and St Francis Theological College, that they may be
lively centres for sound learning,
new discovery, and the pursuit of wisdom.

The First Lesson
Jeremiah 2.1-13

The word of the Lord came to me, saying: Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem,
Thus says the Lord: I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you
followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown. Israel was holy to the Lord, the first
fruits of his harvest. All who ate of it were held guilty; disaster came upon them, says the
Lord. Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of
Israel. Thus says the Lord: What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far
from me, and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves? They did
not say, “Where is the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the
wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land
that no one passes through, where no one lives?” I brought you into a plentiful land to
eat its fruits and its good things. But when you entered you defiled my land, and made
my heritage an abomination. The priests did not say, “Where is the Lord?” Those who
handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets
prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit.
Therefore once more I accuse you, says the Lord, and I accuse your children’s children.
Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look, send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there
has ever been such a thing. Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods?
But my people have changed their glory for something that does not profit. Be appalled,
O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord, for my people have
committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out
cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water.

The Second Lesson
Mark 14.1-25
It was two days before the Passover and the festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief
priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him; for
they said, “Not during the festival, or there may be a riot among the people.”
While he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman
came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar
and poured the ointment on his head. But some were there who said to one another in
anger, “Why was the ointment wasted in this way? For this ointment could have been
sold for more than three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they
scolded her. But Jesus said, “Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has performed a
good service for me. For you always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness
to them whenever you wish; but you will not always have me. She has done what she
could; she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the
good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in
remembrance of her.”
Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to
betray him to them. When they heard it, they were greatly pleased, and promised to give
him money. So he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.
On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, his disciples
said to him, “Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the
Passover?” So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go into the city, and a man
carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the
owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks, Where is my guest room where I may eat the
Passover with my disciples?’ He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready.
Make preparations for us there.” So the disciples set out and went to the city, and found
everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.
When it was evening, he came with the twelve. And when they had taken their places
and were eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating
with me.” They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, “Surely, not
I?” He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the bowl with
me. For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son
of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.”
While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it
to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he
gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. He said to them, “This is my blood of the
covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the
fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

O Lord, who for our sake didst fast forty days and forty nights: Give us grace to use such
abstinence, that, our flesh beginning subdued to the Spirit, we may ever obey thy godly
motions in righteousness, and true holiness, to thy honour and glory, who livest and
reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.
The Collect for Peace
O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give
unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be
set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear
of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus
Christ our Saviour. Amen.
The Collect for Aid against All Perils
Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all
perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Prayers

Creator God, thank you for our world and for our senses by which we appreciate its
diversity. In the challenge of exploration and the discipline of stillness we are refreshed
and re-created. Teach us to use our awareness to care for this earth that sustains and
nurtures the world’s peoples and its flora and fauna, now and into the future.
Renew our wonder, awaken our concern,
Loving God in your mercy,
Hear our Prayer
Redeemer God, we give thanks for your Church, and for the opportunity that we have to
offer our gifts in the body of Christ. We pray for our Archbishop, for the bishops, clergy
and lay people of our diocese, and especially we pray for the life and witness of this
Cathedral Church. May those we encounter in our daily lives find healing through your
love and grace.

Sustainer God, we give thanks for St Francis College, and for Charles Sturt University. For
those who teach and those who learn. We thank you for the blessing of knowledge,
wisdom, reflection, and for your grace which guides Christian formation in all its
expressions. Thank you for those who have tonight graduated with theological
qualifications. We honour them as Christians more fully equipped to do your will.
Transform our learning into godly living and ethical action, for the sake of this world that
you sustain in love.

In the spirit of St Francis and St Clare, renew our passion for mission and service, so that,

Commitment to Ministry and Learning
All students of the College are asked to stand.
The Principal: Archbishop, I present to you those students who will participate in
theological education, ministry formation or postgraduate studies at St Francis
Theological College this year.
The Archbishop: Will you commit yourself to undertake your studies with diligence and
seek to integrate your learning with your faith and life?
I will, with God's help.
In the College and in places where you may be appointed to minister, will you serve as
leaders of Christ’s church striving to advance God’s mission of justice, compassion and
reconciliation?
I will, with God's help.
Will you continue to devote yourselves to study that your lives and teaching may be
shaped by the life of Christ.
I will, with God’s help.
May God who has given you the will to do these things give you the grace and power to
fulfil them, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Archbishop: I invite St Francis Theological College faculty, staff, and all who are
involved as supervisors, examining chaplains, and the families of students to stand.
Will you pray for and encourage these students in their learning and formation? Will you
care for them, challenge, teach and guide them for Christ’s sake?
