RESEARCH DIRECTORATE RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT GRANT Research Development Grant Manager (1 post) One (1) year contract appointment – renewal of contract will depend on the availability of funds (Ref: SMU/MMM/2015/1) Requirements: • Matric/Grade 12 • Three(3) year degree • At least eight(8) years relevant experience (inclusive of management and research) • Financial experience and knowledge of accounting principles, budgeting and financial reporting • Knowledge of financial policies, systems and procedures • Experience and working knowledge of current enabling legislation as related to health and research • Experience and knowledge of current enabling legislation as related to Human Resources • Experience in supervising and managing staff • Knowledge of project management principles • Computer Literacy - word and Excel skills • Valid driver’s licence Competency Profile: Desirable personal attributes and competencies: • Teamwork and co-operation, Innovation, initiative and problem solving • Leadership ability and skill, organizational ability • Decision making ability • Negotiating ability • Good interpersonal skills / human relations ability and networking ability • Analytical thinking • Display appropriate degrees of autonomy, creativity and flexibility and ability to selfmanagement Incumbent should possess: • Sound administration skills • Numeracy and literacy skills • Business acumen and business writing skills • Sound financial management and financial analysis and budgeting skills • Good Communication skills (verbal and written) • Technical skills (in relevant field) Duties: • Planning, budgeting and financial reporting for the Research Grant’s projects o Annual staffing and operational budgets o Income and expenditure projections • Research Grants/Funds Management and Reporting o Liaise and correspond with funding agency with regards to preparing contractual agreements and budget • Project Resourcing through effective procurement and payment management o Liaison with Principal investigators/study managers and other relevant staff o Ensure appropriate resourcing for projects and ensure cost control through budgeting and expenditure control o Develop communication network to ensure effective communication and flow of information • Staff Management o Manage Researchers in relation to their activities and responsibilities to ensure that they render a service to the grant of an acceptable standards and they work within the university finance and HR policies and procedures o Involve and collaborate with staff, keeping them informed of relevant work related issues • General Effective Participation in the management of the Research Grant o Attend and participate in management meetings, providing expertise and presenting updated relevant information o Ensure accurate and timeous reporting and record keeping o Maintain and manage an efficient document filling and management system, including archiving procedures …………………………………………..……………………………………………………………….
