Students will learn that leadership is not about enjoying privileges and giving instructions to others, and similarly, student leadership is not always about waiting for instructions from teachers. Instead, leadership is about ‘standing up’ every day in practical ways. The sessions make it possible to recognise the many ways in which a student leader can be proactive every day and stand up for others, for what is right, for self and whenever there is an opportunity to serve.” GRIP Leadership Conference. LEARNING: Should we fear or welcome failure? The answer may just be in this list of people who did not give up their goal even after facing failure, setbacks or tragedies. ♦ Failed miserably with his first company. - Bill Gates' ♦ He didn't speak until he was four years old and many people thought he was just a dud. - Albert Einstein ♦ Endured a rough and often abusive childhood and was fired from her job as a television reporter because she was "unfit for TV." - Oprah Winfrey ♦ He has dyslexia, and did poorly at school. Instead of giving up, he used the power of his personality to drive him to success. - Richard Branson ♦ “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” - Thomas Edison ♦ She was told that there is no money in children’s books. “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all—in which case, you fail by default.” - J.K Rowling ♦ Was fired by a news editor because he ‘lacked imagination.’ - Walt Disney ♦ Was regarded as a failed actress and a B movie star. Even her drama instructors didn't feel she could make it, telling her to try another profession. - Lucille Ball ♦ Was told that, “guitar groups are on the way out and they have no future in show business”. - The Beatles ♦ Cut from his high school basketball team.- Michael Jordan “Fall down seven times, get up eight.” – Japanese proverb Cheers, Bob Scott. As a request we have put a couple of slides in the newsletter Family Information Night photos and will continue with this each week . Thankyou Meredith and Tanya. Happy reading!! * Learning to read is like learning to swim – you can’t swim by not getting in the pool! * The key to success is in your hands. * You need to set kids up for success. * Don’t ‘teach’ at homeonly teach the joy and love of books. * AIM: Lifelong Readers! The Brokate & Krieg families enjoyed room on Family Night time in the Junior Primary class- Setting them up for success! * Children’s success depends on: - prior knowledge - language of the theme - their interest in the topic * 10 minute session – something that is worth turning up for! - 10 minutes for a struggling or a non-struggling reader. * Therefore the key to reading success is to find their ‘thing’.
