Working Party
Thank you to those members who volunteered for last week’s working party.
Expectations were exceeded as so much was achieved; this of course was all due to the
elbow grease of the volunteers. Members are reminded that the next working party will
be held this Thursday and Friday with the aim of returning equipment and furniture to
the kitchen. There will also be some final cleaning so please bring gloves for protection.
We will provide coffee and tea and the bar will be open at 12pm. It might be advisable to
bring a packed lunch. I look forward to seeing you then. Bryn Davis
Haven Bridge Club
Please note that bridge will be played at the Pilot Boat Inn - Bembridge on Thursday
February 26th, as there is a wake being held at BHYC.

disappointment.
The next Talk on the 3rd of March is being given by Noel Stimson who says he is a
Titanic enthusiast and that his talk is entitled “Titanic – the Captain’s Story.”
To quote Noel: “we all know the story of the RMS Titanic and how Captain Smith was
blamed for the disaster as a result of ignoring the numerous ice warnings and driving his
ship at speed into an iceberg, resulting in the loss of over 1500 lives.
But how well does this story stand up to modern scrutiny? Was Smith a maniac or a
scapegoat? How would the story be told today if he had survived the sinking?
This is less of an enquiry into Captain E J Smith's actions than an explanation of them in
his defence - how I think (after considerable research) he would have defended himself
at the Inquiries had he survived.”
As usual the start time is 8pm, the Bar will be open from 6pm and Supper will be
available from 6pm until 7.30pm. Pre-booking for Supper is required either by putting
your name on the list on the Club Notice Board or by ringing the Club on 872289.

Please arrange your own swaps if you are unable to do a particular day. If your duty
either on Sceptre or Mitre in support of a race, please report to the Race Officer for a
briefing 45 minutes before Harbour Starts or 1 hour before Committee Boat Starts.
If you find this impossible please send an e-mail to [email protected].
Saturday 7th March see the first of two pottering and Shakedown days. The intention
of these is to get people down to clean their boats and also get the club boats in order
for the coming season. Assistance will be on hand to help with rigging and fixing those
items that have taken their toll over the winter.
The following day, Sunday 8th March, there are the final two races in the Icebreaker
series starting at 12:00. It is all very tight at the top with only four points separating
the first three places. Join the race or at least come down and watch the spectacular
racing in this tight series.
Please note that on the 15th March there is the pre-season briefing at 11:00 for all
Sailors, Race officers and Support crew. Catch out on any changes to the programme
and give your feedback to what you would like to see at the same time.

Powerboat Level 2
If you want to do the Powerboat Level 2 Course which is planned for the end of March
please apply now or miss out until the end of the season. The dates are from 19:00 on
Friday 27th March through to 17:00 on Sunday 29th March. Anybody wishing to do this
course should contact [email protected]. This leads on to an RYA Safety Course in
April.
Easter Hotshot Training
The club is putting on formal Easter Training for any cadets that have Stage 3 or above
and want to get out on the water to enhance their skills and sign off any items from
their log book. This will run from Tuesday 7th April starting at 9:30 finishing around
16:30 each day through to Friday 10th April using the club’s 420 and Feva fleet. The
price for this will be £120:00. Please send an e-mail to [email protected] and we will
send you a form to confirm your place which needs to be returned to the club with
payment. There are only 18 places available on this course.
There will be other sailing/training for those that have not reached Stage 3 in either
Pico’s or Oppies depending on ability. This will be done on a daily basis depending on the
weather and tide and will consist of a shorter day. The price will be £20 per day. Again
please let us know if you are interested.
Race Reports
Last Sunday’s force 6/7 gusting winds have provided a window of opportunity for last
year’s winner Phil Wright in Brading Haven’s Open Icebreaker series. Although Gareth
Jones started the day with a comfortable lead the choice of a wrong rig set up had
him struggling for control during the start sequence resulting in him having to retire
just prior to the gun being sound, Jones was soon however joined by Steve de Boise
following a capsize in the middle of the harbour, leaving Phil Wright to battle out the
race in his RS Feva against Fergal Finlay sailing a Scow. Wright in the faster boat
seemed to cope effortlessly in the challenging conditions crossing the line a minute and
a half ahead of Finlay giving him both the race and handicap golds by just 14
seconds. With winds increasing Wright completed the second race in an even shorter
time to again take both race and handicap whilst Finlay did well to bring his boat home
without incident.
Jones now leads the series by a single point from Wright with Barry Dyer just 4 points
adrift so it’s all to sail for come the 8th March.

Ladies That Launch - 2015 Season
To kick off the season we have planned a get together
on Friday 27th February from 6pm to 7.30pm at the
club before the Winter Workshop. It would be nice
to see all “Ladies That Launch” and we would also
welcome any new ladies. Please bring your ideas for
this season’s sailing or workshops, so we can plan and
hopefully add them to the 2015 calendar.
Some ladies have said they would like a racing workshop, others would like a rigging and
knot night, what would you like? Please email us on [email protected]
Hope to see you on the 27th February.
Polly and Linda
To all Scow Owners and interested parties:Please make a note in your diary that the next Scow Supper will be on Friday 24th April.
Unfortunately Paul Newell is not able to give a talk to us on that night, but we are
hoping to weigh some scows to see if they are with in class specifications.
Yes, that's right....weigh a Scow!! Should be quite interesting, our new class captain, Ann
Barlow, has it all in hand.
There will be a poster and list at BHYC with full details soon.
Don't forget everyone- The Scow Class is the largest and most active at BHYC!!
Regards Estelle Rayment.
Cadet Section
Poster Competition
We would like all BHYC Cadets to design a Sea Safety poster for the Club and bring it to
the next Cadet Night in March. The winner will see their poster printed and put up
around the Club. This is open to all Cadets.
The poster should be colourful, A3 in size, have information about Safety at Sea. This
could be what to wear, what to take with you, things to remember before you go sailing.
The poster should be clear to read. The closing date is the 4th March 2015 only one
entry per child and please write your name, age, email and contact number on the back of
the poster. Prizes will be given out in April.
