I researched a paper in seminary about early activities in southern Illinois by French priests,
religious, and laypeople. Did you know that the oldest continuous Catholic parish in the interior of
the US is in our diocese? Holy Family Parish in Cahokia was erected in 1699. Even before then, a
mission at Kaskaskia represented the first glimmer of the Catholic Faith in our part of the world.
My delight in the research took a nose dive one day when I was reviewing an inventory of the
possessions of the mission at Kaskaskia. A few liturgical items, some housewares, some livestock,
and two slaves.
Ouch.
Bishop Braxton has written a pastoral letter concerning "The Racial Divide in the United States,"
which is being printed serially in The Messenger. It is an effort to think in helpful and Christian
ways about our continuing difficulties, so sharply underlined by recent events in Ferguson, New
York City, and elsewhere.
There will always be those who insist on superficial, facile understandings of our racial history, but I
think more people are simply fatigued by the topic. The really exciting points of pride we remember
from the civil rights movement are now 50+ years old. We feel stalled and stagnated. After each
flare-up of these wounds we hear much bluster about the need for a "national conversation" that
never seems to happen, or at least never evolves beyond grandstanding and posturing by public
figures who see a chance to grab some limelight or ring up some political points. Bishop Braxton's
letter does not pretend to provide answers to our difficult questions, but it is to be hoped that it will
spark good conversations. You can find it linked at diobelle.org, and in The Messenger.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Next weekend, every parish in the diocese will be participating in The Catholic Service and
Ministry Appeal. This annual collection supports the ministries and agencies in our diocese whose
scope of service could not be duplicated by an individual parish. Our parish participation goal for the
appeal is 110 households and our financial target is $12,550.00. You will have an opportunity to
make your pledge or pledge at Mass next weekend. No gift is too great or too small. If you do not
receive a pledge card in the mail or forget to bring it, please use one of the in-pew envelopes that
will be available. Please be as generous as you are able.
Several umbrellas and a jacket have been left at St. Patrick’s Chapel. These items can be picked up
in St. Patrick’s basement.
Ridgway Knights of Columbus invites everyone to their Lenten Fish Fries [Fiddlers/filets, and
choice of two side dishes - baked beans, skillet fries, French fries, slaw and hush puppies] to be held
March 6, and March 20 at the Columbus Club in Ridgway. Serving from 5 - 8 PM with carry outs

The Ladies of St Kateri Altar Society will be raffling a beautiful quilt. The quilt top was made
by Shirley Suttner Volkert. She has made and donated the quilt tops for our raffle for many years
and this will be extra special as it is the last one from Shirley. We are thankful for her talent. It was
hand quilted by Delores Schmitt. Raffle tickets will be sold at the KC Pancake breakfast and then
again in May before the drawing.
“Save the Date” July 25, 2015 for the 2015 Annual St Kateri Benefit Auction to be held in the
St Joe Gym. Be thinking about items to be donated to the auction. Further information to come.

the St. Joseph’s Parish Center in Ridgway. Tickets are $3.00 and may be purchased at the door or
from a member, everyone invited. All proceeds go toward the upkeep of St. Joseph’s ball diamond,
charitable donations and other community area youth projects.

March 14, Saturday: 4th Annual St. Jude’s Craft Fair from 9am to 2pm at the Gallatin County
