Moscow, Soviet Union
The occasion: The US/
Russia state dinner to exchange documents for the
ratification of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.
Those in attendance: President and Nancy Reagan, Soviet General
Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev and his wife, Raisa, U.S. Secretary of
State, Minister of Soviet Foreign Minister plus 600 honored guests.
In those days it was not permitted for Soviet citizens to listen to western
music such as jazz; strictly forbidden-especially for their bureaucrats. Due
to the intensely acrimonious political climate during those Cold War
years, there was not much warm conversation between the Soviet and
American dinner guests that night. But, when the well-known jazz composer, Dave Brubeck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Brubeck) took the
stage and started playing the now legendary, Take Five, those same bureaucrats started secretly tapping their toes under the dinner tables in
response to this amazing song with which they were clearly familiar! The
power of music! Boom! The Cold War ice was broken. Relationships were
mended. Treaties were ratified— due to the potent influence of 4 extremely talented people playing the piano, bass, drums, and saxophone.
The next day Secretary of State George Shultz was reported to have
hugged Dave and said, “Dave, you helped make the summit. And today

everyone on both sides was talking about it. They found common ground. You broke the ice.” In his thank you
note President Reagan spoke of “the enthusiasm your music inspired,” demonstrated by “the constant interruptions of spontaneous applause.” In a 2008 interview, Stephen Crist asked Brubeck how it was that his jazz could
break the ice at the fourth and final Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Moscow. (So many other efforts had failed.)
Dave responded, “I don’t know. But I know they all started tapping their feet together. This was the first unity we’d
seen. The whole audience was in there swingin.” Everyone present agreed that Brubeck’s music strongly contributed to the decreasing of tensions and the general success of the negotiations. Stop and think about that. It’s
amazing! Please take a minute to listen to this incredible piece with your children if you aren’t familiar with it—
which you should be! (Your grandparents know it!) It is one of the epic pieces of our uniquely American musical

And that brings me to the fact that we love music at Perimeter School. We
are blessed by an amazing music teacher in Lisa Langston, composer
studies in all of our classrooms, and many of our teachers and students
possess great musical abilities. Last Friday Lower Elementary hosted our
biennial E-Day Music Festival planned by our inimitable E-Day Coordinator, Wendy Williams. It featured many passionate folks sharing their talent
with our captivated first and second

Swift (dad of Ashleigh and Savannah) on sax, Kirk Sarkisian on percussion,
Patrick Hardy (Perimeter Church staff) on brass, PCS parent Chris Magill
(dad of Becca and Sam) as Mr. Beethoven with PCS graduate Amber
Tejeda as his protégé, and our own Marcus Myers (dad of Sadie) who provided experiences on the violin, guitar, and hammer dulcimer, it was an unforgettable day. My apologies to the many parents whose children came
home begging for a cello, violin, or hammer dulcimer! (Actually, I don’t apologize!)

And if that wasn’t enough, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra came to us—and to hundreds
of other community children present on Tuesday! It was so inspirational to hear them play
straight-up symphonic music to the gasps of wonder of our well-prepared students.
One take-away for us as parents is to teach our children about the power of music in these
joyful ways so that they will want to avoid its dark side, as well, should they encounter it later in life.
Make a joyful noise!

Ministry Safe – Sexual Abuse Prevention Training Seminar

With frightening statistics growing in the news and community, Perimeter is being proactive and has contracted
with Ministry Safe, a firm which provides training and assists organizations in the implementation of safety systems, to enhance our child protection practices and further equip our ministries to be aware of sexual predators
and how to protect our children. The Ministry Safe seminar will give you insights into the ways you can recognize

Announcing the PCS Volleyball Clinic for 3rd–5th Grade Girls
When: March 9-12 (Monday-Thursday)
Time: 3:10-4:30pm
Place: PCS Gymnasium
Come learn and enjoy the skills of setting, passing, serving and overhand attacks. Skills taught in a fun, upbeat
environment with emphasis on correct mechanics.
Where to sign up? Email Shelley Knudsen at [email protected] with your child's full name, grade and
teacher. After you respond, you will be sent a permission slip to fill out and email back or send in to the middle
school office.
Clinic fees: $75
*Fees will be deducted from your FACTS account on March 9th.
Clinic coached by Shelley Knudsen (Coach "K") and Kelsea Knudsen (Coach "KK").
You will be contacted before the clinic reminding you what to wear (athletic shoes, shorts and T-shirt; hair tie and
NO jewelry) and bring (i.e. water bottle and knee pads if you have them).

Talent Show Announcement
One of our most anticipated events of the year will be here before you know it! The PCS Talent Show is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2014 at 9:00 am. If you are interested in participating in the show, you must sign up for
the Talent Show Screenings to be held Monday, March 30th, Tuesday, March 31st and Wednesday, April 1st after school (Callbacks will be Thursday the 2nd). The Talent Show is open to students in 3rd - 8th grades. The link

Help for the McCabe Family
Francine McCabe, mother of PCS grads Aubrey (college sophomore) and Brendan, (10th grade), has been diagnosed with recurrence of follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Francine's husband, Tim, travels extensively with his

Francine is fighting off an infection in her vein where the chemo portal is implanted. This infection must be cleared
up for chemo to proceed. Please pray for complete healing and that every trace of the CANCER would be gone.

Ministry and Small Business Opportunities at the Women’s Retreat
The Perimeter Women’s Retreat is just a few weeks away. It is our goal this year to have various ministry partners who are focused on helping women and children. We want our market to be a robust one where women can

Musical Theater Audition Workshop
Sign up before April 1st for the $50 early bird discount!
The Beginner and Advanced Musical Theater Audition Workshops are for students (grades 4-8) who are serious
about performing. This workshop aims to teach students how to choose songs for an audition, identify which
songs are appropriate for their vocal range, as well as how to incorporate acting into their performances. We'll be
working on cold script readings to help prepare students for on-the-spot auditions. Additionally, we'll use acting
and singing games to help students prepare for auditions in a manner that is both creative and fun. Your child will
have 30 hours of concentrated time preparing for auditions, and musical theater along side their peers. Registration closes June 1st. Only 25 spots available for each workshop!

Guatemala Mission Trip through Perimeter Church
Guatemala MDV: May 30- June 6. $1500. Guatemala School/Medical Missions Ministry. Divide your days between Mana de Vida, (Manna of life) a private school for impoverished children, and working in a traveling medical clinic. At MDV, be part of the “manna” God provides, helping the school stretch sparse resources to provide
excellent education in a loving Christian atmosphere. The kids will fill your hug quota for the year! Choose among
projects that meet the school’s needs, such as helping teach English, painting, filling food bags, and leading
games. A translator will accompany each project. Medical professionals, adults, older teens, and families with
