The Copyright Librarian is the Hesburgh Libraries’ coordinator and consultant on issues that
span copyright, licensing, scholarly communications and information policies pertaining to
library services and initiatives. In conjunction with the University of Notre Dame’s Office of
General Counsel and internal library stakeholders, this individual is responsible for analyzing
intellectual property policies that pertain to the creation, addition, or use of copyrighted or
licensed content.
As a member of the Digital Library Initiatives and Scholarship Program and the Center for
Digital Scholarship, this position oversees efforts within the Libraries to ensure that the use and
dissemination of resources is compliant with university policies. This individual guides overall
library activities pertaining to copyright in conjunction with campus stakeholders.
The individual also provides information about copyright-related issues in the library, for
example fair use, permissions, scholarly communications, and specialized requirements of data
access, use, and sharing. The position considers issues related to emerging technologies specific
to copyright, rights management, and intellectual property as it relates to a university library. As
a new area of focus, the individual will contribute to the long-term evolution of the position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serves as the Libraries’ internal coordinator regarding the use, creation and dissemination
of copyrighted works. Provides direction regarding copyright, content and related
licensing, and permissions. Recommends best practices, for example, with
documentation and training on copyright compliance issues. This includes exploring
intellectual property issues pertaining to the Libraries’ digital repository, CurateND.
In consultation with University's Office of General Counsel and other library and campus
stakeholders, oversees the Libraries’ comprehensive approach in coordinating efforts to
ensure that terms, conditions, and expectations for use of library resources are clearly
communicated to users.
Using university legal counsel as a resource, organizes and develops seminars, programs,
and workshops to educate faculty and students about copyright and licensing practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:
ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Science or J.D. and significant
experience with copyright required. 2-3 years post-graduate experience in a legal or higher
education setting preferred. Electronic content licensing experience preferred.
Strong oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, enthusiasm for instruction
and communicating emerging issues, experience working with Section 108 of the US Copyright
Act, and a proven ability to work well with colleagues required.
The ability and willingness to provide excellent service and to work in a collegial manner with
students, faculty and staff, and other constituencies is essential.
Salary and Benefits:
Appointment salary and rank are competitive, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Librarians are non-tenure track members of the Library Faculty. The University offers an
