We’re featuring the top designers and practitioners from across the globe, like Italian architect Piero Lissoni, our first-ever International Guest of Honour. And we’re creating the most envelope-pushing environments – like this year’s How Do You Live? exhibit and the 10th annual Studio North showcase of Canadian design – to challenge your perceptions and ignite your senses. Never before has there been such an interest in the culture of design. This year marks the inaugural year of IDS Platform, our week-long cultural design festival that brings high-end cultural design to downtown Toronto. Enjoy film screenings, interactive exhibits, installations and lectures, as well as this year’s Conversations in Design symposium, Trailblazing & Trendspotting, which hosts luminaries from as far as Sweden, Denmark and Italy. A TAS Designbuild Feature Presented by National Bank Presented by Sponsored by How do you challenge traditional ideas on what makes a great living space? Build an unabashedly contemporary one right on the show floor. Here’s a sneak peak at the creative minds behind the exhibit The Rooms Mazen el-Abdallah THE ROOM IN ONE WORD → Mazen el-Abdallah “Layered” Best known for: Gorgeous residences across the city, plus interiors for the likes of Untitled Films and Richmond Optometry. Modus operandi: “I always approach a new space with some idea or concept that I think will resonate with the occupant. So it’s important that I spend time understanding the client and their nuances.” Behind the scenes: “My installation, Reading Space, asks us to stop and ponder the stories behind the objects we collect and live with.” The Exterior Mazyar Mortazavi of TAS DesignBuild THE EXHIBIT IN ONE WORD “Moment” ↑ Mazyar Mortazavi of TAS DesignBuild For over 15 years, Mazyar Mortazavi has contributed to Toronto’s growing skyline with such projects as the LEEDcertified M5V Condominiums. “We’ve always been interested in looking at the innovative aspect of housing,” he says. “We wanted to see how you can take a series of unconventional things, place them under a conventional structure and create an experience out of them that people can respond to.” The developer/designer maverick reveals a few key details behind his innovative outer shell for the exhibit. Basic idea: “The concept started with us asking what a modern interpretation of a dollhouse would be. Our response was stacked shipping containers.” Behind the scenes: “We’ve been pushing and exploring how these spaces can all begin to correlate, and what their relationship is to the spaces between the boxes themselves. How do you create a courtyard? How do you create a garden? How do you create a rooftop?” Main idea: “We believe that movement through space needs to be an experience. It’s not as though you’re just walking in front of one box and then another – you’re actually moving through a sequence of spaces. It becomes an experience of the entire thing rather than these isolated boxes.” Goal: “We’re allowing people to think twice about what they’re used to – breaking the mould. Some people might like it, and some might hate it, but as long as it instigates thought and provokes conversation, we’re getting what we wanted out of this.” 8 / InteriorDesignShow.com → Ashley Rumsey and Stanley Sun from Mason Best known for: This multidisciplinary studio has worked with Sony, Adidas and W Hotels (in a collaboration with Yabu Pushelberg). Modus operandi: “We always start with defining a concept. Setting a clear stream of thought sets a framework for the duration of the project,” says Rumsey. Behind the scenes: To create its space, Mason explored the “primitive rituals” that take place in the kitchen and bathroom. ↘ Youssef Hasbani Best known for: His sleek and serene furniture and accessories boutique, L’atelier, in Toronto’s Rosedale neighbourhood. Modus operandi: “I like simplicity with a twist.” Behind the scenes: The designer/retailer is creating an enveloping oasis that leads out to an exterior courtyard in which he hopes to embody the silence of a desert night. “I am hoping that show-goers will want to spend the night.” →→ Theresa Casey and Robert Gray Best known for: Interior designer Theresa Casey and graphic designer Robert Gray previously collaborated on The Red Box, an exhibition that used WWII periscopes and viewfinders to explore how designers shape points of view. Modus operandi: “Make it relevant, make it work, make it sing!” says Casey. Behind the scenes: For this installation, the duo delved into intensive research behind sleep and dreaming. Youssef Hasbani THE ROOM IN ONE PHRASE “Outside the bazaar” Hot Spots Audi Lounge The Audi Lounge is situated at the very heart of the show floor. Stop by to check out the statement-making A5 Cabriolet (shown below), which is more distinctive than ever, with sharp new accents, a revamped silhouette, and redesigned rear and headlights that are now available in Xenon Plus technology with LED daytime running lights. And what better way to get the creative juices flowing than a little champagne? This year, Veuve Clicquot makes a splash in the Audi Lounge with a champagne bar. Scavolini Cafe The Italian kitchen manufacturer partners with local espresso cafe Zaza to offer show-goers a true Italian cafe experience. Flos Power Station Rest, recharge your devices and enjoy the avant-garde Soft Architecture wall at this illuminating lounge, where visitors can preview Philippe Starck’s D’E-light and other new launches. IKEA Ticket Centre Clayton Budd, of Clayton Budd Projects, re-imagines the IKEA Ticket Centre as a multi-sensory experience with lighting and textural elements. And don’t forget to check out IKEA’s 980-squarefoot kitchen on the show floor. Rhed Built by Poliform The multi-disciplinary design firm teams up with the Italian furniture and storage brand to create a completely unique exhibit. Rick Mugford and Caroline Robbie of Quadrangle THE ROOM IN ONE WORD, OR TWO “Corpulent” “Feast” Jill Greaves THE ROOM IN ONE WORD “Touchable” ↑↑ Rick Mugford and Caroline Robbie from Quadrangle Ashley Rumsey and Stanley Sun of Mason THE ROOM IN ONE WORD “Ritual” Best known for: The Corus Quay building, ONRoute service stations, the Candy Factory Lofts and other awardwinning projects. Modus operandi: “Start with an open mind, listen, test, have fun,” says Robbie. Behind the scenes: “Our process for this project is non-linear iterative and collaborative,” says Mugford. “All our ideas are laid out to think about.” ↑ Jill Greaves Best known for: Interiors for the National Ballet School, Yale University and (the now-defunct) Xacutti restaurant. Modus operandi: “Eliminate the negatives, and the answers are all within your reach.” Behind the scenes: “This project is fun because it is more like a little stage set than a room installation. It should feel timeless, gorgeous and make an impression.” Theresa Casey and Robert Gray THE ROOM IN ONE WORD “Poetic” Since its inception, National Bank has been committed to the development of the communities it serves, aiming to be a powerful engine of social and economic growth. IDS welcomes National Bank as the sponsor of this exhibit. InteriorDesignShow.com / 9 Ideas.
